  1. It's getting dark in the mornings, time for a new light...
  2. Just a reminder that 99er uses the same COVID rules as CTCT. aka: Present your double-vax card & ID at registration, or get your brain tickled (and pay R200 for the privilege). https://www.99er.co.za/index.php/cycle-tour/covid-regulations
  3. Fair enough, I take your points. I see they have now posted a comment on their page (though they claim the accident was at the start of the race, not the finish?) https://www.facebook.com/winelandscyclerace/posts/500704941403500
  4. No. I'm sorry. Someone DIED. I come from a running background, only started cycling last year, and I'm honestly shocked that this can happen and the race organisers have, to a large extent, gotten off completely free (as far as I can tell). If this happened in a road running race, the race would probably never happen again, without significant changes and medical allowances. If this happened in a trail running race, the organisers would never get a permit again. I'm honestly scratching my head trying to work out why the reaction is different in cycling.
  5. Cool, thanks. updated: https://www.strava.com/routes/2911638442591227096
  6. Something like the purple line?
  7. Given the route description is simply: "From here the route continues on Vissershok, through Durbanville to exit on Wellington / Klipheuwel Road (R302)." You can see how we'd get confused 😂 Will try an update when back at my desk...
  8. Looks pretty similar to my interpretation https://www.strava.com/routes/2911638442591227096
  9. I saw those "bollards" whilst out running last Friday and had to laugh. I mean, you could try ride another 200m up that track, but beyond that you're really not gonna have a good time once it becomes the Fernwood singletrack/broken boardwalk climb to the contour path 😆
  10. Well your manual route aligns exactly with my manual route, so either we're both right or we're both lost 😃
  11. I think you mean "by *overwhelming* popular demand" 😂
  12. Made by hand reading the directions, so could well have some bugs, so sense check it and don't follow blindly... Winelands Cycle Tour.gpx
  13. So we're still a week out, but... eish
  14. My dad (in his 60s) just got an avalanche mte. Cost him R24k (ie dirt cheap for an ebike). It's never gonna be used to film the Cape epic, but you know what? We can now do a 50k ride where he keeps up with me the entire ride, and we can chat and have fun. It's an amazing equaliser, and a complete game changer for him.
  15. Nice 85k gravel loop around Stanford. Managed to get through 50k before the heater got turned on.
  16. Don't forget the sachet of deep heat....
  17. Yeah, I was lank confused by that. My back-of-the-envelope calcs suggested my seeding would improve after that race, but the combination of that weird winning time, and the beta factor meant I stay as I was 😒
  18. From my (2 race) experience, midpack at Ctct is very similar to midpack at these other races, just smaller bunches (and non-closed roads...)
  19. A random question: In one video commenting on the GCN videos (meta...) Jesse Coyle noted that it appeared that during the Zwift events during the Finals there were no fans for cooling/air flow. Was this actually the case? If so, that must have been... fun...
  20. I see Olympic Cycles have the battery replacement listed on their site, but as out of stock. Please report back with your impressions of the bike, my dad is looking at getting one, and as you say, it's a very attractive option.
  21. (Very) easy trip around most of the Around The Pot 60 miler route. Really nice gravel roads, plus the obligatory trip on the Malgas ferry. The 5k N2 section back to Swellendam at the end was... unpleasant. Stravas: https://www.strava.com/activities/6445773155 Much appreciated restock at the Breede River Trading Post just before the ferry: The Malgas Ferry:
  22. Yeah, it's done well so far. Only the 2 standard bottle mounts, which is mostly fine. Got a longer ride planned for Thursday, so will stick 2 smaller bottles in the back cages and see how that goes.
  23. Yeah, those are the stock wtb byways that come with the Rook scout. Fine when it's dry, deathtraps in mud. Thankfully minimal mud today. The back two cages are single bolt mounted onto the pannier bolts, with cable tie supports. Just testing it out, might switch to front fork (single bolts there too) if it gets annoying.
  24. Due to some Christmas 'rona I decided to rather take it easy today, so just did Greyton to Riviersonderend. Great weather, very few cars. Now time for lunch at OuMuel 😁
  25. A Christmas present to myself, a stem bag to keep snacks in for next week's longer gravel adventures.
