  1. its also to do with how you like to sit.. and what you plan to do with the bike (and for me that has changed over the years) currently I have both Medium 26r and 29r Peace (these are bigish) and a Large Gary fisher 29r (smallish). I am also 1.81 but have not got the longest legs, and although I am comfortable on my GF am starting to consider if I shouldn't change it for a medium... Why, well for climbing the GF is great with its long wheelbase and long top tube, but on the technical stuff its not as good as the others because I feel like I have less control, but on fast down hills its great because it is more stable and on longer cross country stuff there is space to stretch out. So to sumarise: the best bike at a bike park: medium 26r the best bike with technical trails but no long or realty fast bits: medium 29r (bigger than 26r although same frame size) the best bike for longer distance xc stuff: large29r My problem is I need to rationalise... I am also looking for a steel single speed road/cx bike too and then it will be 5 bikes including my normal road bike, can I justify so many
  2. well my post 2 days ago was a bit optimistic but I am down to 101kg on the scales this morning... all that partying to celebrate being offered a new job didn't help either with getting up to do my long sessions or 'restricting input' Cheers!
  3. I have a single speed and road bike too, and do some running, swimming and Pilates as well... along with a Low GI diet... average time doing sport weekly is +/- 12 hours currently. Oh and the bike stood for 18 months not being used because I had a neck injury..
  4. Hi all, yesterday evening I noticed that my fork (fox RL 29r) is feeling very 'hard' and wondering if I need to get the pressure adjusted (no pump came with the fork ) I am pretty sure it doesn't need a service yet, the bike has only done about 500-600 km... what do you think? Cheers Iain

  7. I love riding my 26r rigid, steel single speed (GT peace) AND I love riding my 29r fisher... each is a lot of fun and each different from the other. I will never go back to having one bike... so I can enjoy both 'feelings' Tonite the 29r peace arives and I will report back which I like best after doing back to back testing Either way the first reason anyone, should ride any bike is fun, (and possibly to get from a to b ) secondary reasons could be to train so that they can have even more fun on the bike!
  8. this is definitely true, just doing the same thing each day your body gets used to it, so whilst this is easier (for me at least) to get used to and make a habit, mixing different sports, and different intensities makes a huge difference. This week since Monday I am down 4kg , but then I have done 4 Pilates sessions (doing an intensive course) two swim sessions and two '7km run' sessions along with DnD last night - 25km MTB whilst the Pilates and swim are not that intense they build core muscles, and the running and MTB burn alot more calories. I am hoping that I will be down to 99kg 101kg after the weekends planned activities, at least one session at northern farms on a single speed, and some 'running' with the Hash group :-) Edit: Must have been very dehydrated when I weighed my self :rolleyes:
  9. No problem get a single speed, rigid, steel 26r' (Like I did) and then everyone will ask you about you bike, like they did when I got my Fisher 29r 2 years ago. In the end everyone has been riding 26r bikes since the 80's (or earlier) so having a choice is already nice... wether the x5 drivers decide to show themselves up on a carbon 29r' should we be bothered? At least they are riding!!! there is hope yet

I used to ride in London with my Walkman (yes it was that long ago) and after some very near misses (mainly double decker buses at night after a few beers) and BLOODY motor cyclists who thought it was funny to roll up behind you out of gear and tap you on the shoulder I stopped. Now days I don't miss the ipod, but rather spend the time to let my thoughts have free rein.. that way I return from cycling refreshed mentally as well as totally knackered physically ;-) AND when a truck is coming I have a few seconds to tense up in order not to wobble in the slip stream, sometimes mega important given they forget to leave you any space.
  12. I am still running 'standard' 53/38 (I think ) and 11-24 on my road bike, but will be changing it to 11-27 or 28 soon as I am finding I too often am in my slowest/easiest gear on the hills and would prefer to be able to spin a bit more.

  14. How much is flood lit? I imagine my lights will fall off with some of those drop offs etc... but I might be up for it if I can get off work early enough...

  21. interesting discussion, at 38 I see regularly over 180 when riding up hills which should be my max HR, according to 220-age, according to the more complex one it comes out at 190ish, but a couple of years ago at a HARD spinning session after a stressful day and NO food I had closer to 220.. The instructor was slightly worried when she asked everyone if we had managed to get our pulse high enough and I told her mine was between 220 and 230 (measuring pulse against a clock not a HRMonitor) When I am on a long ride if I keep my pulse below 180-185 on hills I know I will not blowup too quickly, does that mean that equates to 90% certainly if I go above that on a ride my recovery time is much higher (i.e. no desire to ride for at least 48 hours afterwards) Any thoughts? would be interested to know as to improve my climbing performance I really need to start doing some hill repeats etc..
  22. last thing I read was 18.5 - 25 is the normal range...... of course people with loads of muscles (they are heavy) will come above that.. but to be below that and healthy is rare.
