  2. / slight hijack What does a simple respray like this cost in the market. My brother has a gt road bike he would like resprayed, just enquiring as to a number range to advise him. Thanks
  3. I'm placing an order in the next day or two, probably enough for free shipping if someone needs an odd item included and will pay their share of the duties
  4. also nothing, will check the LBS this weekend only if the time trial tomorrow is going to be meaningless to the overall standings after today
  5. I recently did Johan's Course and went from not touching anything on my bike because its highly specialised stuff that only my fully trained LBS staff can touch, to stripping my whole bike in one weekend and not fearing just about any job on my bike. Also I don't trust an lbs on anything on my bike ( I am sure there are exceptions), I'd rather make sure I did it and know its done proper. Also if it fails, its all me. Anything outside my reach would need to go to a specialist for forks or wheels for instance and just till I learn those skills myself I highly recommend the course, the wife did the course the same weekend and she loved it too. Its an eye opener and a fear remover of some note. It also changed my view on buying components and kit because I can look beyond the brand and look at getting a well built part ideal for what it needs to do. I am still building up my bag of tools but as everyone says buy for what you need as you go, otherwise you have a bag of tools you never use.
  6. To the purists the winning ways of the 29er cannot be attributed to anything other than cosmic luck or probably a conspiracy by manufacturers to promote 29ers and Ill give them the 29er is not finding the traction the manufacturers hoped. Now we have the European manufacturers onboard with 29ers... The last dying screams of the 26er brigade may well be etched on the walls of thehub, so one day you may point you child at this forums archives and show him what a 26er looked like
  7. I'm sure the last penny farthing riders also claimed that those darned new fangled safety bicycles were a fad and would never catch on. Like the DI2 system never catching on and yet there is campi into the market with their own electronic system. Progress is Progress. Marketing is Marketing *dives for a flack jacket and heavy cover
  8. the road bike, continually altered Merida Ride and the Mountain Goater 29er, somewhat less altered
  9. http://media.masslive.com/breakingnews/photo/9518476-large.jpg You guys carry on about 29ers like the last horsemen of old sitting in the bar telling folks how these horseless carriages will never catch on...
  10. I like FA because of the local support if you need a repair / have an issue. If they are as good as and I get local support for the product, isn't that better than ASSOS. Can you get repairs etc for them locally? just asking
  11. and where one could enter?
  12. I as a n00b to this biking thing tried some of these fitments. Ive done the local biking pro's setup, the super american bike brand branded super pricey setup and the LBS setup. What did we learn? A basic setup at your LBS, given that they are decent (read probably not Cajees) is 90% of the work. A fitment with a local pro who does it, will help tweak your setup if you're getting serious. The super expensive american branded one, will make you feel cool and can pinpoint problems maybe the eye don't pick up on but that's a maybe. It comes down to the professional doing the fit and his experience. Not the shiny gadgets in the fitment room. In the end, we have a trainer and we do it for ourselves mostly, so a bit of reading, some experience (mines limited but growing), getting over the fear of getting something wrong, leaning on your LBS a bit and you should be 90%-95% happy. I also got in depth about how to do the setups with lasers and levels, et al. For most people, an eyeball and the riders feel is going to be a better guide. No expert, just my findings to date. Start with your trusty LBS, (mine is Linden and they are superb), move onto a local bikefit type operator if needed but I think a sports physiologist / biokeneticist of some sort would be my second / third option before I tried some storeman and his laser goodie-ma-gadget edit - cause my English language usage sucks sometimes
  13. CRC have bigger size rings for the SLX but in 9spd, mine is 10spd. is there a differance? I expect the 10spd chain wont work on the 9spd's As to riding off road. I'll have to pedal harder I suppose
  14. Hi * I have been slowly building up some kit for my MTB for on road use. (yes, nothing beats a road bike for road but at my size, those puny little things crumple at the sight of me, nevermind me sitting on the damn thing) One of the things I have noticed is that the front chain ring at 24/32/42 is a lot smaller than road bike sets and the loss of speed is noticable on the long flat sections I ride a Giant XTC1 2011 and was thiking of upsizing the chainring to a 50 something / high 30's / mid twenties combo on the front for road rides. I havent been able to find anything online. so... 1) Do such things actually exist for MTB sets like SLX? 2) Would something from a Shimano 105 or similar road set fit? 3) Should I rather just get a road crank for the front and fit that when riding on road? If a get a compact set triple ring crank, would the slx front derailer work for the road set? Thanks in advance
  15. Gawd, how did I miss that awesome feature
  16. You have to read the full advert to get the full value of this package it includes * enough !!! marks to form a new language similar to morse code but only using exclamations * a genuine Speed Meter - Now I have not seen one of these for sale on the hub, so the rarerity of this item alone must be half the price * a rear light for night time rides, again outstanding value, normally only found on cars * amazingly another unique item - a multi tool tire remover tool. Although I suspect a failure of the comma key caused by the stuck ! key * A ritchey rear, which is either Madonna's @$$ or a very awesome rear wheel not normally found on a bike of this stature * not to be outdone, this bike also comes with shoes which stiffen your awesome carbon frame. Quoting from the ad 'Northwave Airflows cycling shoes, with carbon reinforcemet sole' - Thats right folks carbon reinforcement soles, like power bands but in your shoes and only for your carbon frames or in this case the awesome carbon fork. So all round, this has to be one of the best deals ever...
  17. The guys that need that equipment are the guys out there while you guys were sipping champagne at the finishing ceremony discussing what to do with your 'extra' new race bike. How Elitist! tsk tsk Seriously I know you cant have everyone waiting around for the last guys to finish to do a draw but you cant exclude us because we are not super fast either. If we entered and payed, we should all have had a fair shot at the bike
  18. Anyone know what happened with the draw for the bike? I was out on he road till late. Everyone was packing up when I got in and wasn't clear where the draw happened / was going to happen.
  19. and its official contador cleared from the bbc Three-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has been cleared to race after winning his appeal against a provisional one-year doping ban. Spain's Contador, 28, tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol during last year's Tour in July. The Spaniard protested his innocence, claiming contaminated meat was responsible for his dope test failure. Contador was cleared of knowingly using banned drugs and will now take part in the Tour of Algarve from Wednesday. Full report to follow.
  20. I purchase a bib from Sportsmans Warehouse in December which started to come loose at the seams some 3 weeks later. I returned the bib to Sportsmans who took my details and promised to send it off to First Ascent for inspection / repair. 3 Weeks later I got a call to say my bib was back and popped up to the store to fetch it. No charge, repaired. SO off I went happy to have my bib back and no charge for the fix. When I got home I discovered that both seams were still not fixed and in fact the bib was as I sent it in. So miffed at myself for not checking and not even attempting a try two with Sportsmans I emailed First Ascent to see if I could send it direct. Now forgive my naivety, I didn’t know that first ascent offers repairs / replacements on their gear. I just didn’t want to get screwed with a piece of gear that failed after maybe 10 rides But on getting my mail, they apologized for the screw up (not theirs but they apologized anyway), sent their courier to collect the bib from my house (wow) and then after checking the bib, sent me a replacement, all free of charge to me (wow wow wow) After that experience I think the guys at First ascent deserve a firm nod of approval for great customer care and service. You probably won’t find me in another manufacturers gear unless something drastic changes
  21. Yes indeed. Now if you can just give me the address of your Joburg store? so I can go try them on. Heck if I knew the fitted I would have hit that order button weeks ago.
  22. I have been trying to find a wide shoe for big old feet and finding nothing really that fits in SA. Shimano do have 'w' wide sizes but they are not brought in by the looks of things SIDI have a specific wide size which does seem to be in SA. CWC lists them but I cant find anywhere in JHB that has them in stock for me to go try them. Anyone know where would have stock in a 45/46 i could go try? Other options for wider shoes would also be appreciated
