  1. Had to get in a quick few commutes after a terrible flu ..... at the Jhb office for the rest of the week but hopefully back in full force again next week when back in Cpt ... !!!!
  2. At last found one on eBay in Germany, arrived today To try out on some Tacx Galaxia rollers to add some resistance https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/03/going-old-school-using-bike-trainer.html
  3. ... so close .... yet so far away ... we are forever chasing Samson
  4. I was chasing desperately ! But now .... 2 days commuting left for me ... then a week in Jhb and holiday not long after ... :| I’ll lose about 3 weeks worth of commuting .... ugh!
  5. Could do a daily commute to a neighboring town for groceries, office supplies etc
  6. @cat-i .... a big number coming up this afternoon !!!! Woop woop !!!!
  7. I’d say “that’s a commute”!
  8. 3 days’ commuting left … then a week at the Jhb office, … and a few days later I have one and a half weeks of holidaying. Will miss out on at least 400 to 500 commuting km’s ….. but will do some other pedaling in the Transkei Going to have to play catch-up when I get back again
  9. Is the spoke count the same?
  10. It was a freakin monster .... I was drenched within the first km and then had to continue the next 20km in some of the heaviest rain we had in years ...????????????
  11. Yes the dark comes earlier now, but only 2 weeks to go to the winter solstice (21 June), then it will start staying lighter later again Cape Town sunrise and sunset times differ quite a bit from Jhb ... morning ride sometimes begin and end in the dark at the moment .... Johannesburg. 6:54. 17:24. 10 h 29 min Cape Town. 7:51. 17:44. 9 h 53 min The morning ride in the dark is awesome, the evening ride sometimes get a bit rough when it rains, maneuvering between the pavement and the buses. But it’s always better than taking the car
  12. Less than 70km between 2nd, 3rd and 4th .... some wet winter commutes coming up
  13. ... yeah!!!!! ... for the 1st time ever i’ve made it onto the podium ... but only because you know who has not updated his rides again
  14. Glad to hear you are ok. The anxiety just as you get on the bike every morning before the commute ..... yours’ and the other incident reminds us commuters that it is a real thing. Hundreds of cars pass us from behind on any specific day, and you do not have any control over the action of the drivers ..... On one specific hill in the morning I take a detour in winter as the sun is sitting just above the horizon right in front of me. I do the detour for the drivers, as I would be invisible to them .... drivers don’t realize we as commuters need to compensate for the 2 ton steel boxes constantly
  15. Glad to hear you are ok? What a strange place for the fork steerer to fail? Would have thought it would fail at the crown-race?
  16. Don’t know if I understand your question correctly. But I recently laced an asymmetric FRM rim to a dynamo hub and failed to recognize beforehand that the rim was asymmetric. Turns out on a 285mm spoke the 5mm movement to the left only changes the spoke length by 0.5mm which is negligible. I often choose spokes 1mm shorter or longer when stock isn’t available ...
  17. Yes it is. I commute daily and subsequently spend most of my cycle time in the debris close to the pavement. Had Schwalbe Pro One’s initially, but they are too soft ... a great race tire for middle of the road racing, but not for commuting - they cut easily. Mounted a pair of 25mm Giant Gavia’s 1’s instead, they are heavier but harder/thicker than the Gavia 0’s. Mounted them with Stan’s Race, and top up with Stan’s regular. Running 80psi and they seal quickly.
  18. At a 4-way-stop this morning waiting for a vehicle to cross straight over so I can go (he got there first) .... meanwhile he is signaling behind very dark tinted windows for me to go first ... ???? .... maybe he thought I’m psychic ???? Happening more frequently these days .... not being able to see the driver of the vehicle signaling behind their dark windows.
  19. My Girlfriend stays in Lakeside, roughly 17km from my place in Observatory. I usually cycle from Durbanville (office) to her via my place. This morning I left her place ... cycled my way home to Observatory, picked up office wear and continued the commute to Durbanville. As I got off the bike ready to chain it at the office I realized I left the office key-set at home ???? Had to cycle back home, and cycled back to office again .... 17 + 24 + 23 + 24 = 88km monster morning commute .... Sometimes suffering is just suffering. It doesn't make you stronger. It doesn't build character. It only hurts.
  20. Last winter I bought some over-booties for the rainy days. What a pleasure to get to the other side with dry warm feet. Also a bonus to not have to fit wet shoes for the ride home. Also ... if it’s really cold I would wear leg warmers - but not if it’s raining. If it rains the leg warmers get drenched, and together with the wind and cold your knees freeze
  21. ... trying to dodge sewage spills running across the roads at the moment is getting out of hand in my daily commute. Not nice cycling through it Heard that with load-shedding the sewage pumping stations can't handle the capacity which causes the system to overflow …. Some instances I can see it running into the storm-water system? …. Catastrophe waiting to happen
  22. It’s magic on a geared bike ... spinning out on a 53 x 11 ???????????? My dynamo hub seized 2 weeks ago on my heavy commuter and I thus decided to use an older geared steel bike for the interim .... now I don’t want to go back ... eeek ????
  23. Yesterday the South Easter ...... today the heat .... going to be an interesting ride home this afternoon. It’s 36 degrees at the moment!! ????
  24. Thx .... haven't been to Newlands forest and the likes for a while. But since I will now need to spend more time in my running shoes I might as well do it on the trails
  25. Thanks Wheelsuck, CBlake, gurns and IceCreamMan for the advice on the running distance. I want to enter the full IM in PE next year, but I dislike run training and would like to do the minimum running but not have to rely on my head completely either on the day. The 70.3 distance, where I had to a 21.1km run on the Race2Stanford was hard. I can swim 4k comfortably, and the cycle should be ok, but even with ample time, a 42km run is extremely demanding. A 42k run by itself is a monster! Will get myself a program and start putting in the miles, with some speed work and hills in-between. And start training on a TT bike ….
