  1. Eish, sorry to hear, but very well done for finishing. My partner and I also did the Peninsula yesterday, trying to qualify for the Comrades. Was my first marathon too. I just-just managed to get there in time for Comrades qualifying, needed 4:50, made it in 4:47. From Fish hoek to Simonstown was brutal. Sadly my partner didn't qualify, we are also doing the West Coast marathon to get her there.
  2. lol !!! ... I'm at the Jhb office for a few days.. might only be able to get a commute in next week . The interference from the office has started
  3. https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews/compare/continental-grand-prix-5000-tl-2018-vs-pirelli-cinturato-velo-2018 The Pirelli's taking a beating on rolling resistance ..
  4. I'm also looking at trying the GP5000TLs, .... interesting that both Egan Bernal and Ivan Sosa from Ineos fell in the Colombian National Championships in Tunja on Sunday, and Team Ineos is sponsored by Continental? Both were front wheel slipping ... wonder if it had anything to do with the tyres they were running?
  5. I never have breakfast. I have only a cup of black coffee before I commute (cycle) to the office. On some days I cycle back home without having had anything the entire day. I do intermittent fasting. On fasting days I'll do the ride home a bit more relaxed else I bomb around 20km of the 38km commute.
  6. don't believe everything Hairy says ... rather find yourself a gear where your quads don't burn, grab the drops .. and spin. Hairy sadly only have one gear .... but it doesn't have to be like that ... but the wind will become your friend
  7. i am speechless
  8. While on the topic of Peugeot. I have a Peugeot Prestige Mirage from 86' which I want to fix up for the next "Hillclimb". Was my first race bike . I damaged the fork in a house-move and after much searching decided on ordering a fork from Soma. The steerer on the fork is a bit too long though. Does anyone know which bikeshop in the Southern suburbs will be able to thread the steerer a bit further down (and then cut the excess)? It's a 1" inch dia. steerer.
  9. Love tubeless .... best thing ever for commuting. See your tires is still new, I dread having to replace well used tires on my commuter – nothing goes like bald/smooth tires …..
  10. interesting article on transition from cycling to running ito injuries: https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/business-day/20200126/282050509036403 reference: (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/329965611_Bone_health_in_elite_Norwegian_endurance_cyclists_and_runners_A_cross-sectional_study)
  11. Thank you. I did some road riding over weekends last year, but this year my weekends and off days are taken up by running. 124km running and only 1024km rides thus far for January. I'm on +-40km a week running, and +-300km a week commuting.
  12. it's scary how quickly things go wrong .... glad you made it out unscathed
  13. This is amazing ... I read up last night there is even a US patent out for a design like this ... Although it will be picked up by an X-ray, will it be picked up by a thermo or electromagnetic scanner?
  14. Ag no .. did this thread just end again? For a moment there I was so happy someone started this again …. Had a mechanical doping question. Was thinking about the storing of elastic potential energy together with advances in material science. Some kind of torque blade/spring winding up while you pedal/brake downhill or in the peloton and releasing when you need it to open a gap at a strategic opportunity – no battery needed either. And it won’t be picked up by an electromagnetic scanner either. Is it possible that the pro's could be using / or have used devices like this?
  15. I'm just setting the pace .... I won't be able to keep this up easily. Think we should be more concerned about Zub ... when he decides it's time to upload his commutes
  16. Similarly to Allen Carr's book - "The easy way to stop smoking" the book "Total Immersion" by Terry Laughlin (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/936958.Total_Immersion) had changed things for me dramatically. Swimming had become a meditation instead of a chore, and I love it now. I can go much further and with much less anxiety (if any). If you are an adult beginner to long distance swimming, and you struggle, I would recommend you having a look at this book. It changed my world of swimming. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/936958.Total_Immersion
  17. Well done Cat-I If this was sports betting then you would have had some hectic odds stacked against you. First time a female made it to no:1 Furthest distance ever And done on a 26er MTB It’s going to take a huge effort to beat this one. Well done!!!!! I’ve taken the Cotic(26er) to the office a few times and there is a massive difference in effort between 700x40c and 26x2.25 Respect!!!!
  18. I've done it on the gas-stove a few times and was uneventful until as above I dropped the chain and splashed the liquid over the side. But agree, the risks is rather large that it could ignite - although not as flammable as 93/95 octane.
  19. I've asked the exact question before on another thread here before. In the meantime I experienced the full "Darwin awards" effect when I dropped the chain whilst taking it out the pot on the gas-stove. Pot caught alight - big scare - big flames - but just dropping the lid back on the pot and all good again. Just keep the lid handy - and try not to splash. Maybe better yet. Turn the stove off when dropping and retrieving the chain from the wax.
  20. Awesome!!! Well done Cat-i !!! we're in uncharted territory now 9184km on a 26er MTB !!! ... and we're not done yet !!
  21. So yesterday I’m gunning it into the wind topside of Rondebosch Common towards Claremont. Next moment a guy on a MTB comes flying past me – and sitting up? I shift a gear back and start spinning like hell – this commuter race is on! Still he pulls away as if I’m in reverse. …. My ego broken, and my mind looking for excuses – maybe it’s the heavy gravel wheels? .. maybe my age? .. the weight of the backpack? Two minutes later with my ego in tatters I stop at a traffic light and he comes flying across after having made a loop …. on his e-bike.
  22. mmmm .... 28 pages of "road bikes" classifieds ... just bikes ... financing killed the (secondhand) market.
  23. yes, been using it for a while .... and it works well. Have now bought Reitzer's Technical oil (http://www.reitzer.co.za/reitzerbrand/reitzertechnicaloil) to mix with the candle wax (melted candles). My next batch will be the first with Reitzer's. Hopefully it will work well. My top-up mixture with Xylene isn't perfect yet, but hopefully the new oil will make a difference.
  24. Yesterday I had to attend my son’s award’s ceremony and thus had to take the car to the office. I would rather face a thousand “South Easters’” than sit in that traffic daily. I feel so sorry for all those that don’t have the option to cycle to work
  25. Cat-i crushing the 9000km mark this afternoon .... whoop whoop!!! Well done Cat-i !!!
