Ok, so I did some window shopping and I have a clear winner on my first road bike.... I am a total "neut" when it comes to road bikes, so would like some advice... (a) Compact or normal crankset? (b) Which cluster? 11-23, 12-27?? Thanx! J

The wonder that is the hub: 1 guy asks how big a bike that he think of buying should be.... 30 minutes later people are talking about long/tall guy fetishes.... HAUK!!

Planning on doing that ShortLegs, thanx! I like to do a lot of homework before I buy, so this is only the start of the process. Will probably only buy early 2009.... Must say in terms of styling I am strongly leaning towards BMC, Specialized, and Pinarello..... Will see how my financial position looks when it is time to buy. J

keith, how much do you weigh?? us heavy guys must invest in descent shocks (and rims) if you plan on doing rough riding..... buckled quite a few wheels before I upgraded my rims.....

Had an really entry level bike (giant boulder), bought a descent 7k bike December, and then I really started enjoying the sport! Just more fun and easy on the body the better your bike is.... Well, middle may I upgraded to a good dual susser..... Not looking back one bit! My point: If you're gonna ride a lot, make a big initial investment, if you know you're gonna ride once a weekend...... DONT OVERKILL!

Depends on which bike....... for example: white looks cool on a Commencal, but on a GT Marathon Carbon.......... (lets just say: SIESA!) I prefer blue-ish grey, seems racy and stylish. (mtb-only) I have no opinion on road bikes.

TIP: DONT GO BENEATH 2.5 BAR IF YOU DON'T HAVE UST RIMS!! Had tyre burps when I still had non-UST rims.... Also depends on your weight... Vetties moet maar styf pomp!!

Find out at your LBS about the mavic CrossTrail rims. Really fast, not the lightest, but very strong! Think you will get away in your price range.
