When we were children any bike was fine,like your first car!! Buying a bike is a expensive excercise if you want to enjoy it,buy a decent bike from a reputable bike shop,yes it sounds like they are trying to rape you of your money but they do know what they are talking about. You wonder were I get my opinion from well i also thought I knew better and in 4 months of cycling I am now on my second bike cause the first one was a cheap bike,the second one a decent bike and what a differance!! SPEND THE MONEY OR TAKE A LOAN,look after the bike and you will have years of pleasure,unless the cycling bug bites in which case you will be making a second loan!!

Well my first ride is officially in the bag. 1 hour 50 for the 27km and I was hoping for a 2hr. The timing was abit of a problem but my time is within 30 seconds of my computers,just luck I suppose.

Not wearing my cycling helmet any more,it gives me flashback to my days on the border!!

My friend from what I can gather there are 2 reasons you want a 29er: You will go faster and you will be able to do the technical parts easier. Save your money and just keep riding the bike you have,the speed will come and your technical riding will improve. It is not the bike but actually the rider that makes the difference??

Well I paid R130.00 for the 26km collected my number in the waterfront and got 3 tickets for that wheel thingy valued at R80.00 each.Took the family for the ride,everyone happy. 3 wheel thingy tickets minus race entry equals R110.00 saved. can someone tell me how the start works? Cannot see us all starting the 26KM together as the highest number I have seen is 1625 so I guess we will be started in groups??

No derailers keeps the weight of the bikes down,you just change gears manualy with your foot. Stunning bikes ,would love to build one some day.

In my humble opinion the problem is your lack of salt.If you do not like salt would a salt tablet once a day not be the easiest option,quick and easy. I used to suffer cramping as a youngster while surfing and the tablets helped. I am no doctor but have heard salt helps to replenish lost electrolites lost during excercise.Just my opinion but maybe someone else can shed more light on your problem.

Just read the "riding the argus twice" thread and I think I know were FRAILS "wig" is. The organisers are holding it pending the outcome on the suspision that he rode the route 4 times and abused the waterpoints on each lap!!

FRAIL's in a lot of poop(lol),4 laps is going to be a lot of disqualification for one person.Can offer you a buddies number who never rode so you have 2 laps covered,anyone else want to sponser FRAIL another round or two? Then again as long as you do not abuse the tables on the 2,3 and 4th lap you may be alright?? Seriously though the youngster made a mistake, so what we have all made mistakes in our lives. Big up to him though for doing 2 laps and still finding time to help people on the second lap,some of the people he helped might not have made the end without his help. A mistake yes but NOT the end of the world!!

Hoping to do it in under 2 hours but what type of hills to expect ,just a few mild climbs or a mother or two??

Doing the 27km as my first mtb event so am a bit nervous and would also appreciate any info available.

Merida was my first choice till I saw the Scwinn. Merida is a real looker but the Schwinn has better components.

SHOP AROUND!!! I am new to the sport but have found that every bike shop has good deals and bad deals,the only way is to travel from shop to shop,time consuming but worth it,yesterday I was quoted R1500 for a helmet(Fox flux) and today I bought it at another shop for R899,that's how big the savings could be. Have had good service from glen at cycle lab in Northgate Square and from Cycle Teknix in Table View(Henbar). Spend as much money as possible on the bike else you will be buying another bike in 3 months-personal experience. Could you not transfer some of the better components from the old bike to the new??

Made my bike 5kg's lighter i the last 2 months!! How: ate more salads and healthy food. Cost: nothing!!

It is so typical South African the way we will bitch and moan (and get into mud slinging matches)to everyone and anyone about the bad service we get but only about 5% of us will go back and complain at the bike shop!! Stand up for yourselves,you payed good money to have a job done so if it is not done properly go back and demand that it is redone or a portion of your money is returned.If you do not make the owner of the shop aware of the problem well then he thinks everything is fine? I went to a restuarant the other day,service was terrible,complained,got a voucher and returned a few weeks later,the buffet was so much better and the service had been jacked up!! If I had not complained management may never have realised that there was a problem? PLEASE GUYS COMPLAIN WERE THE PROBLEM LIES FIRST BEFORE CRYING ON THE HUB??

Ok so all of this has really freaked me out,not having the best looking "pip" in the world but still valuing it I keep it wrapped in polystyrene while riding but the base of my skull is still not protected!! Have found a "THE f-14"helmet on CRC but nothing like it in SA.It seems to be a much better helmet compared to the local ones as it also protects the base of the skull. Any advise will be appreciated?

With my limited knowledge I would guess you have got bearings that are starting to run dry. Take the bike to your lbs for a service before something more serious gets hurt. Have no idea what a service costs in Pretoria but in Cape Town you can get away with R350 for a full strip and rebuild.

Cyclists are there own worse enemy!! There is a cycling lane but no we rather ride in the road next to the cycling lane and then still 2 abreast? We cannot even show respect to each other.Please correct me if I am wrong but I bet everyone who reads this has entered a "fun ride" only to be pushed by someone who thinks they are racing the Tour de France?? If we adhere to the rules and show some respect for each other and towards the other road users well then just maybe they will return the favour??

Hi and here is my 2c worth. I have had my schwinn moab elite for 2 months now and am still madly in love with it. The bike goes well and I really feel like the king on it.As for specs well I do not think you are going to find a better new bike at this price.The shop were i bought mine actually said that if I bring it back they could sell it for R7500.00 cause they are battling to get stock in Cape Town. Buy the bike you will not be sorry!!
