  1. Now that i'm logged in, a chance for a gratuitous bike pic from December.
  2. Talk of the Guzzis takes me back to a school friend of mine, his dad had a guzzi in the garage. no idea what, but the image of the V65 looks familiar (bike shape). It was covered in dust, and I may have only ever seen it run once. His other project was some kind of 2 seater aircraft that he was working on as well. This somewhere in the late 80's. Thanks for the memories.
  3. Check out maps.me free to use maps, works offline.
  4. @Thug https://wilddog.net.za/threads/garmin-zumo-595-lm.273435/
  5. I had an old Tomtom that came with a previous bike, I really did not enjoy the UI. But this is a 7-10 year old unit by now. cant go wrong with the zumo, as this is motorcycle specific, and a garmin. phones on handlebars has never been a good idea to me.
  6. Picked up a New to me bike in Hout Bay on Friday, ad rode her home.
  7. From what I saw at Ride joburg, picking up stragglers at the back, who did not see the end, I too agree, that they would have been better suited for the short route. However, we have some measure of free will, and if you want to try your hand at the long ride, and not make it, so be it. Chances of returning the following year I would say is 50/50, depending on how motivated an individual is. The short route option is great to get more peeps to ride, some will hopeflly experience it as a gateway drug to advance to hopefully bigger things. My first MTB event was the spring classic, and I outright almost died on the trails, but it had me hooked. And albeit slowly, I built up to longer distances. Not every person feels the need to be validated as a cyclist by the distance they ride or their ranking on a segment on the orange app.
  8. Well done. you should change your forum handle to SolidBrassBal
  9. Wow. It's the sheriff. Hotel California and such...
  10. Al wat ek weet, is, ek het al 43 afrikaans sprekende mense Sondag ontmoet, hulle het almal aan die Johannesburgse fiets wedren deelgeneem. Die samesyn was ongelooflik.
  11. The general perception that “an ex-pro” or current “pro” has to know what they are talking about when it comes to coaching is flawed. One can also gain a fair bit of knowledge by reading lots on the internet. ( ironic, this sentence) not only cycling training and performance related, but with a myriad of other topics. This does not qualify one to successfully and responsibly apply this knowledge to others. My advice (from a semi-anonymous character on the internet - see the irony here) is to get a coach with an actual reputable and verifiable qualification in cycling specific performance coaching, just like one would get a qualified accountant to do an audit ( not KPMG) or a medical doctor with a degree to perform surgery.
  12. For a scientific tailor made program, contact trainlikeapro-za.com (Also late to the topic)
  13. I decided, at the last minute, being coaxed by the wife to join the ride as part of the AA Angels. Started in between the last 3 batches of the long route with the aim to assist riders along the way. We helped our first lady with 2 flat tires who was sent down the BRT lane, and had to make it over the rumble strips (ok, slightly bigger that rumble strips) when a bus approached from the front which resulted in two impact punctures. (this was about 3km in.) Then a participant at 9km, with cramping legs, who only made it to the water point. Then it was the missus and I on our own all the way to Woodmead ( I ran out of gears as soon as we hit the highway, I had to take it easy there, as I knew this is what causes cramps later on.... Pretty eerie hitting the M1 on a bicycle in the opposite way of normal flow with no traffic! Started picking up stragglers after Kyalami, we were motivating, giving advice to make the cut-offs at the water points. Hitting the main road climbs, and after monte, it was cramp city. People walking, riding, walking. Was it not for some residents (a sports massage therapist) who voluntarily assisted riders with the worst cramps, I think there would have been many more "casualties) The motivation carried on till jan smuts, I was reading 34 going up through craighall. The Blue Bottle beers stop was awesome, had a castle lite going up the hill while motivating walkers/riders (probably not the best image to portray) At the zoo, we had a regroup, where the AA Angels banded together to get the last riders to the finish. Let's just say, people at the back end of the ride, had some serious determination and grit. I salute every one of them, I don't know if I would have pushed through all that pain for a medal and a coke light. It was humbling. Had a great day out, lots of laughs, lots of motivation, exposure to selfless people standing on the side of the road, cheering perfect strangers along till late in the afternoon. My Day: 6:55 total time, 102.5km 1400 odd meters. Special Shout out to Vered properties who had a draught machine at the entrance to lonehill. Got stuck there for a couple, as well as the blue bottle beer stop at the bottom of craighall, beer shots and a castle light made me feel like I was almost at SS champs. Shout out as well to all the AA Angels, some joining us after their race lap, some strong mofo's that seemed to be able to push people up the hills ad nausea. It was a great day out. Well done to all who rachieved their goals, weather it was to just finish, or break a personal best, or surpassed their planned race time. Live in the moment.
  14. Nice, Congrats. The 8hunnerd twin is a beaut of a motor, and the GT has a good seating position. I fell in love with the 8 twin when I had the use of the F800s while by dakar was in for a service. In other news, my 8gs is coming up for sale. Will post deets soon, but If anyone knows of someone looking, it would be great. 2012 model with 130k on the clock. Owned it from 50 000 kms, mainly commuted. I’ll post on WD as well. Need to wash and take some photos. Reluctant sale.
  15. I agree. No point in complaining about it on a Saffer forum.

  17. I think this scene is from True Romance IIRC
  18. Not been following.. how many calories for typing on the internet, or clicking onto this thread...
  19. Hi Sam, welcome to the hub. I think its great that you and hubby both are keen on indoor training. The wife and I share a kickr with a 10 speed cassette. She uses a silverback alu roadbike, and I use an old 26 inch mountain bike. Both with quick release, swopping bikes between sessions takes less that 2 minutes ( which includes getting the relevant bike from the garage.)There was a notice from some of the carbon bike suppliers that extended use on an indoor trainer could compromise the frames a while back, (cough-canyon-cough) the issue seems to have been resolved mostly. Im not a tupperware fan, so It’s not an issue for me. By the sounds of it, you would be best suited getting a direct drive trainer, and fitting a 10 speed casette on the trainer and fitting a 10 speed chain, shifter and derailer on the 7speed bikes. These can be had for little money, as you only need an entry level spec for the dedicated bikes on the trainer. We have a very tight cycling budget, and have been doing ok by having the absolute minimum for indoor use. I dont have a gym contract, so spending the couple of hundred rand on zwift for me is not an issue. As for direct drive trainers, We have had a very faithfull and hardworking kickr1 with no issues. Elite has some solid options, but as far as technical support goes, nothing beats wahoo’s local representation.
  20. Damnit. This was the missus and my Bucket list ride to do together. Time for a new plan.
  21. The day ( final day of leave) has dawned. Not too thrilled to go back to the office tomorrow.
  22. Having done multiple sani’s I would say Berg ‘n Bush. Last Sani I did was in 2019, and it was still very much corporate focussed. I’m in for Berg n bush this year ( last years entry got transferred) and I am super stoked. From a rider experience perspective, BNB just has a bit more of a personal feel, from a route perspective, Sani is a little better, however, there is nothing wrong with the BNB singletrack. Now, for the best of both, just enter Joburg2c, and all will be good in your life.
  23. Thanks, the last post was taken at Avianto, in Mulder’s Drift. My post prior to that was a combination of the cradle, and Cradle Moon.
