  3. Hi Sam, welcome to the hub. I think its great that you and hubby both are keen on indoor training. The wife and I share a kickr with a 10 speed cassette. She uses a silverback alu roadbike, and I use an old 26 inch mountain bike. Both with quick release, swopping bikes between sessions takes less that 2 minutes ( which includes getting the relevant bike from the garage.)There was a notice from some of the carbon bike suppliers that extended use on an indoor trainer could compromise the frames a while back, (cough-canyon-cough) the issue seems to have been resolved mostly. Im not a tupperware fan, so It’s not an issue for me. By the sounds of it, you would be best suited getting a direct drive trainer, and fitting a 10 speed casette on the trainer and fitting a 10 speed chain, shifter and derailer on the 7speed bikes. These can be had for little money, as you only need an entry level spec for the dedicated bikes on the trainer. We have a very tight cycling budget, and have been doing ok by having the absolute minimum for indoor use. I dont have a gym contract, so spending the couple of hundred rand on zwift for me is not an issue. As for direct drive trainers, We have had a very faithfull and hardworking kickr1 with no issues. Elite has some solid options, but as far as technical support goes, nothing beats wahoo’s local representation.

  6. Having done multiple sani’s I would say Berg ‘n Bush. Last Sani I did was in 2019, and it was still very much corporate focussed. I’m in for Berg n bush this year ( last years entry got transferred) and I am super stoked. From a rider experience perspective, BNB just has a bit more of a personal feel, from a route perspective, Sani is a little better, however, there is nothing wrong with the BNB singletrack. Now, for the best of both, just enter Joburg2c, and all will be good in your life.

  11. That’s how I got started as well. But in general I do not have the desire to eat before 9 or 10am in the morning (usually awake and active from 5am during school terms) My weekend rides with the missus often sees me forgetting to eat prior to or pack a snack for 3 to 4 hour rides. But I ride low intensity with her. I guess the take-away (no pun intended) from this thread for the OP will be that everyone’s body is different, experiment with what works for you. Drastic changes is not always good or sustainable.
  12. A note on riding fasted. It takes some getting used to, and it should be done slowly increasing intensity and duration. Best done early mornings
  13. This is true, regardless of metabolism type. But most people will not do low HR/power endurance rides. The temptation to smash it hard on a section to beat a pb may be too much. I do the same, as most of my riding is go till you blow. I am fortunate that I can smash whatever I want in my face and only gain weight when I stop exercising. If I had to stop drinking beer, I’ll probably drop another pant size…but who wants to do that.

  15. Did my first Festive 500. Would not have happened if not for Zwift and some virtual speed generated by friendly chatty group rides. This also brings up my longest distance year ever. was going strog till covid put me down, took my time to make sure i have no lingering effects, and then works happened, with early mornings, late nights and many kms walked on site. so December was the month to get back into it. Once again, if not for Zwift, the consistency wouldn’t have been there. Sure, lots of peeps dont understand it, and derive no enjoyment from it, I have been a long time user, and it is as much a oart of cycling for me, as inflating tyres, and lubing a chain is. Have a great 2022 all, congratulations on all your achievements, Kudo’s and Ride on!
  16. I had some company on Zwift today. Was lekker to ride with a hubber (HdB) I need to do 50kays a day for Rapha, but will probably do 60 so as to make it 6k kms for the year.
  17. Be consistent (not at not riding - that one I have waxed) 2021 was a good year for me, I reached some mental health goals, and I plan to keep on working at it. I was riding consistently till rona put me down, then as usual work got the better of my training schedule. I am desperately trying to reach my goal of 6k kms, by far my year with the most distance. ( 60kms per day will get me there, If all goes to plan) 2022 has some really big things happening, if all of those things fall into place, it will be life changing, hopefully for the better.
  18. Wtb trailboss. I swear by these tyres. If you are all about the flow, then you really shouldn’t even be uttering the words rolling resitance. Weight, rolling resistance, all does not matter unless you are top 10 contender. Don’t overthink it.

If you are new to cycling, you will find great progress by using trainer road and cookie cutter training programs, you will find the same by riding your bike lots. if you want to train in the correct way, while managing training stress and fatigue, and understanding when to take it easy, as well as what it means to take it easy, a coach will help you lots. There are also coaches, and there are people who call themselves coaches with no real qualifications. Please research properly, an ex pro does not equate to a good cycling coach.

  22. I have been off the bike since my last post. The last week saw me overindulging in birthday festivities, thus my ride yesterday at VG with the missus was. Tough, to say the least. Came upon this dead puffy, was smack bang in the middle of the trail. I moved it over to the rock on the side of the trail, so that scavengers may get it. By the time we hit Greek church climb, temps were well into the 30's. I was sweating the last 3 days's beer out at an alarming rate. Made it to the shade of the church (it was sunday after all) Then, time for recovery at Ale House.
