  1. Maybe if you post the components of each bike you will get more assistance. I stand to be corrected, but the Silverback is only a 8 speed (24 ). I would suggest you look at 9 or 10 speed. That extra few gears come in handy every now and then.
  2. Look around and you will find GT Avalanche 1.0 (2011 ) for about 5k. That is really great value for money. One of my friends bought one a few weeks agoq and he is as happy as can be with it.
  3. Yes, the bike rack.....that is another few dollars and a must to have!
  4. For about 7k you can get a fairly decent entry level bike. You must just keep in mind that your kit and accessories is probibly going to set you back another 2k just to start with. Group rides, that all depends where you are situated and where you want to ride. If you know somebody that do mountain bike ridding, speak to him/her, they would probibly the best people to advice you! PS. Welcome to great sport and bunch of people!
  5. Although there were various discussions regarding tubeless I still don't really understand it. (Sorry.....I am a bit slow) lol I took both my bikes to a shop and they converted them to tubeless with new tyres that is UST. That set me back a few bob!! Now my daughter and my wife bikes still run on tubes (Merida Race and Maxxix). All these tyres is about 80% and would be total waist to rip off and replace with UST. Can I make them tubeless for them. They're not racing snakes and dont think they will ever reach the point of burping the tyre. Please give some suggestions here?
  6. That is what i love about the HUS......you can actually learn something new everyday!
  7. Is there a way to measure my 26er to establish if the 650b / 27.5 rim with tyre would fit?
  8. We have a bike shop that is very convenient situated, but from service, customers relationship they dont nothing about. To top it up, everytime you walk in there it feels like they doing you a hudge favour by selling you something from their shop. Some time ago I serviced a bike there and the bike had to go back three times to sort the brakes and all sort of **** out that they had worked on. At the end of the day I should have just drove that extra 60 km and would have safed me a lot troubles. I rather drove that exra few km and get good service from a shop that is willing to go that extra mile.
  9. Thank you, i will have a look. I did howeversee that Giant and KTM got 14.5, but again availability in South Africa would be different story. Thank you for your reply!
  10. My wife currently ride a GT Avalanche 1.0 extra small (14.5) . She is due for an upgrade and already establish that she is to small for a 29er. Now my question is.....is there any make (Brand) that actually make a dual suspension bike in a Extra Small (14.5). Her hight is 1.54 (Big poisen in small containers)
  11. I got a new 2011 Giant Anthem X 29er in a shop last week for 23k.....a awesome bike!!! Really like that polish frame with the blue, looks better than the 2012 bikes.
  12. Thank you to everybody comments. I took the bike back to the bike shop and they sorted the problem out for now. The rotor was not straight and the brakes was not properly aligned with the rotor. They claimed that they had sorted the problem out. In the meantime knowing and seeing from other people comments, i started to look arround for other rotors. I currently got 185 in the front and 160 at the back and not sure who can supply, for example XT rotors in this sise.
  13. I just went and look and it is definitely the G3 one I have on the back. The bike only did about 75 km now. Is it a common problem and if so, I should probibly change the disk?
  14. I bought new bike with Elixir CR brakes. I took it for it first ride and about 15 km into the ride it developed a horrible noice everytime i use the back brake. It sound like steel on steel when using the back brake. At that stage I thought it could be because the bike is new and the brakepads need to set probibly. After the ride i washed the bike and look at the pads and could see that everything is fine and the pads is still thick. Yeserday i took the bike again for a ride. Everything was fine and without any noice untill about 20 km in the ride, and then i heard it again and continue untill the end of my ride. Somebody actually siad that it is only dust making that noice. My other bike got Shimano brakes an i never had any of these scratch noice coming from them. What can that noice be and how can i fix it.
  15. To everybody that assisted me in my choice......A BIG THANK YOU. I took your people advice and bought the 2011 model. Must be honest, although the bike got better components, it is a mush nicer looking bike as well. I picked it up this afternoon and so stoke! Cant wait to try it out this weekend.
  16. Thank you everybody for your comments. I will for now just use the bike with tubes and slime, and change to tubeless when i need to replace tyres.
  17. I am in the process of getting myself a giant bike. The rims and tyres are stock standard - Maxxis Crosmark 29 X 2.1 with Giant P - XC2 rims. The dealer told me that the tyres is not compatable to go tubeless on these rims and therefor have to get UST tyres if I want to change to tubeless. Since then I establish on the the hub through other people coments that the dealer want to roll me some dung and that is apparently possible to convert Maxis Crosmark 29 x 2.1 tires to the Giant P - XC2 rims tubeless. Since the dealer don't want to assist me, I decided to do it myself. (Here come a thing and I don't want Mrs. Mountainbiker to think I don't know about this DIY thing) Now the big question: What would your recomment.....Stans or Ghetto tubeless? I do have a 150l compressor at home. Please keep in mind that I am in the bushes and bike shops not very close just to pop in and out. The only tubeless that I can get my hand on is Stans or the Ghetto system. Your thoughts on this will be highly appreciated.
  18. Thank you everybody for your comments. The reason why the tubeless is R1400 is due to that he (bike shop) claim that the tyres on the 2011 model is not tubeless ready or convertible. That R1400 is for other tyres that is apparently tubeless ready. How far that is true, I don't know.

  20. Get a 15 gauge needle and 20ml syringe, suck the sealant up through the needle, then you know it'll go back through, jab it through the tyre tread, inject and spin. This way you don't even need to deflate. Look for a duiweltjie hole, and you won't even be putting a new hole in your tyre. I've only done this when I'm feeling very lazy or am in a hurry. I like this way even better!!
  21. I know this was an old topic of discussion, but did a search yesterday and came to this one......and exacly what i was looking for. Thank you to everybody comments here that made a job that i dreaded to do so simple and easy. Thank you again!
  22. I was cycling with a mate of mine at Virginia Trails yesterday. About 15 km into the ride, I heard this hissssss sound next to with my mate on my tail. As I look, I just saw this huge black Mamba about a meter from me and with his front body about a meter in the air. Due to the long grass, could not see how long he was, but was about as thick as my wrist. From that sise I presume he was BIG and not something to make friends with. As I went passed, he start sailing in the opposite direction lowering his head slowly. I stopped a few meters later, just to get all my brackets and bearings in order and to make sure my pants is still fine! Lol
  23. Well that was exacly why i bought the GPS. At a stage we were about 6 friends cycling together with cycling computers. After each ride, all of us had differant distances despite that we ride exacly the same route. That distances was from time to time as much as 1.5km. My whole idea with the GPS was to have more accurate speed and distance......seems to me I am back at square one then! :-)
  24. I was just thinking today.....i am using a GPS. Although i got the sensors, i am using the GPS unit itself to track speed and distance. How accurate is the information comparing to other bycicle computers (not gps).
