  1. You have too much money Wayne!!!!!
  2. I use them all, to find the best deal - shortest air time, best luggage allowance etc. If you check, you'll find that most of them are owned by the same company and will offer Virgin, or Air France, or whatever, depending on from which they get the best deal, they mostly don't give a sh.... about you (notice I didn't say kickback)!!! So, essentially I check them all, all have phone apps these days (all the ones mentioned above and cheapOair, eDreams, Vayama). I then find the flight I want to take, check on the app of that airline and buy whichever is the better deal. Just bought a UK ticket to Gatwick via Qatar. Of all the apps, only Vayama offered Qatar air and was R1k cheaper that the Qatar app. Air France and Alitalia were cheaper by 15%, but who on earth wants to spend 30 hours in airports, and, or aircraft? AND AIR FRANCE WAS HAND LUGGAGE ONLY!!!!!! EXTRA FOR LOAD ON BAGS. It's wise to check baggage allowance, airports and travel times to choose what you want.

Yeah, it was a fantastic concert and the 'kindness' of Bruce Springsteen to all the South Africans was fantastic --- especially given that PW was still president. My brother played at the Rhino Fest the night before, so was a few days of a lot of Zambezi lagers. We drove from PE to Durbs, as I said, then through Bots and into Zim via Plumtree to Bulawayo. Even on that route, which we thought would be quiet, there were loads of cars heading up. Bots was a bit of a nightmare in those days, AK wielding army dudes, roadblocks all over, and absolutely no humour. 6 of us in my old Merc 240D donkey. A great car, but way too heavy for the 240D motor.

Human Rights Now Concert 1988????? I too drove there, PE to Durbs to pick up mates, then on to Harare. Rhino Fest the night before and then National Sports Stadium: Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel, Sting and a few others. Stadium was head high in dope smoke, lucky I was in the stands

LONG TICKY BOX I know why Telkom is broke, we used LONG TICKIES all the time!!!!!! Phoning home from Varsity, Durban to Salisbury.
  6. I'm one of those unlucky bug......rs that has a Google device 'bricked', due to a bug in their update!!! Both my HOME and my HOME Mini are useless, don't work. Of course, Goggle will replace them, but because I'm in Africa, which is a 'country' they don't support ( ), I need to get them back to the UK, where I bought them to have any chance of getting them replaced. Anyone going to the UK soon and can carry about 1.5kg of HOME and HOME mini?????
  7. Do you still have the 3D printing plans for the hub seals? I need some for my AX hubs. I'll pm you.
  8. Bravo BadSam, great story. Shows plenty of passion. Gives those who might not understand an idea of the labour and research that goes into restoring an iconic bicycle. Can't wait to build my FullPro, but with period Suntour parts!!!!
  9. Another example of NOT COOL trading practices on BikeHub. So, sometime early am yesterday (28th September), The Professor posts for sale a Vintage pair of Campagnolo Cobalto brake calipers for R1000, no bids, no offers, just buy at R1000. About 5 hours after the ad is placed, I see it and DIBS and send the required Whatsapp. Around 11 am I’ve not had a reply to my whatsapp. Although it’s been read. I message again and I get a reply -- Hi. There are 3 people interested in them. What would your highest bid be for them? I decline to bid. A lengthy whatsapp discussion ensues over the day because: To my mind, the calipers were advertised at R1k, so whomever was first should get them at R1k. I don’t think it’s cool to advertise and then ask those interested to ‘bid’. The long and the short is that The Professor does not agree that this method of doing business sucks!! Apparently the guy whom was the first to reply to the ad got the calipers. That’s as it should be, but I wonder how much he ‘bid’ to get them in the end???? ****I don’t have a copy of the ad, it was removed quite smartly and I don’t know how to access expired ads on the hub. But, perhaps someone can “Vintage Campagnolo Super Record Cobalto brakes” or something similar. The same calipers were advertised on Gumtree for R1000 and I have a screen shot of that ad. I also have a transcript of the Whatsapp correspondence, for those whom are bored!!!
  10. Anyone interested in a Google Chromecast (Genuine) 3rd Generation??? I have a brand new one, still sealed in the box, but with a UK plug. R750 including PostNet or Aramax shipping to you. If interested, send me a pm.
  11. Welcome to the Bike Rebuilders Society!!!!! There are quite a few of us on the Hub, restoring anything from BMX to older urban bikes. I mostly concentrate on European classic road racing bikes, though I have a good few SA classics and a few 'old' MTBs. Some of the guys have quite big collections, 50 or more bikes, restored over many years (AND UNABLE TO SELL THEM  ) . A lot of the guys post on the Retro thread, but only a few (DJR is one), post a blog type thread of their rebuilds. Keep it up, interesting read.
  12. For those interested, there's a C40 Hp/Bstay model with Record 10 speed for sale at Ultimate Cycles in Knysna. I don't remember the size off hand, but it was also 58/59. The shop is asking 20k, more or less, but I recommend bargaining, In other words, I think the shop is pushing for max return. I've looked at the bike and it's in good nik, very nice actually. I told the shop that a collector would probably offer R15k. It's been there at least 12 weeks, so I think they'll be open to offers.

I knew William relatively well. Not here to comment on his money, or him, none of that is important. He deserves his award. I met his mom, Margaret, in about 1980, when I was a young scientist, she was a very amusing and a wonderful lady, often, I think, unsung in what she did. In JLB's book, Sea fishes of Southern Africa, Margaret did the illustrations, and they are beautiful! I have a first edition, a bit battered, but treasured. As for the coelocanth, the story is a little more complicated than JLB discovering it!!! As usual, there are other unsung heros. The coelocanth was caught somewhere off East London by a fisheman, he thought it unusual and took it in to the East London Museum. The Director of the museum was a woman (can't remember if her name was Rosemary, or Nancy, surnames are unimportant). It was she who recognised the 'scientific importance' of the fish, kept it and sent it onto to JLB. Just a little recollection from someone who was there a little after the event (I was a scientist at the PE Museum), when the main characters (other than JLB himself) were still around.
  15. some Durban shops that rent bikes http://www.2ride.co.za/ http://www.bikeandsaddle.com/ https://xpressiononthebeach.com/durban/rentals/bicycles/?gclid=CjwKCAjwtYXmBRAOEiwAYsyl3OxWpfUBPBwRIVo2e2QxBM-GlNOChf1FFxS6czaSQHF2DLB_IAvQBBoCMO8QAvD_BwE
  16. Tell them to get stuffed!!!!! I paid for my Mom's DSTV, my mom died, I gave notice to DSTV, amongst the many things I had to do. DSTV carried on for a month, unbeknown to me. I get a bill for R800 or whatever. Tell them them to bugger off, As far as I'm concerned, I gave notice. A few months later I sell the decoder at 2nd hand shop. Get a call a couple of days later, they can't sell it, because I owe DSTV money. It seems DSTV is protected! I'm stuck with a decoder (one of the recording ones) I can't sell, because somehow, legally, DSTV can prevent anyone else from 'registering' it on their system, until the monies are paid!!! That was 6 years ago. Decoder in the bin. Never heard another word. I'll never pay DSTV a cent, never.
  17. GOOD LUCK TO ALL EROICA RIDERS FOR TOMORROW. Unfortunately, won't make it this year. First year I've missed an Eroica ride for a good few years. To all my friends riding, enjoy, it's the fun, camaraderie and friendship. HAVE FUN.
