I can only suggest attaching a 100m pole horizontally to your bike, with the chip attached at the end, this way when you cross the line the chip will cross the mats, and the problem will be solved. There may be some aero disadvantages, but it doesn't really matter. Think Jousting.

Thing is that I haven't got it installed yet I had it booked in for a monday but couldn't take it there, so booked it into another shop and then couldn't get there. Then I needed it for the rest of the week and then it was the argus and all the workshops were full, so hopefully at the end of next week I can give a review.
