  1. Mr Bornman, I accept what you say with regard to Titanium, and looking at my cracked Litespeed I can see exactly what you said as it happened on my frame. Now, I see there are some manufacturers out there that build Titanium bikes, where the main 3 tubes (top, down and seat) are made from Titanium, yet the lugs, stays and head tube are all carbon. Would that make any difference? Sure, its not exactly a Ti frame, but there are no complicated welds, just tubes plugged into carbon lugs. Your opinion please?
  2. Went through the Suikerbosrand reserve two weeks back. Stopped to assist some other riders, and while stopped I was shocked to see Gu packets lying by the roadside. People clearly do not care.
  3. Very sad, condolences to the family. RIP
  4. I forget where exactly I read it, but in 2010 more professional riders complained of displaced chains and rear derailleur issues on SRAM Red than any other groupset. Look at Schleck's now infamous moment with Contador. Personally I think it is personal choice. I've always enjoyed Campagnolo, but I have also loved any bike I have had with Shimano.
  5. Try DCB Logistics, as far as I know its either owned by a Hubber, or he is a director. (Big Mig) just add .co.za to the dcb and you should find some helpful info
  6. Contact Big Mig on the Hub, support a cyclists business! He's with DCB Logistics...and the service is tops!
  7. To be precise, a former Tour De France champion, Giro D Italia and World road champion...all done in the same year! LEGEND, thats a fitting description!
  8. But PPA have no interest in a tour that will cater only to elite riders
  9. Never scrimp when it comes to a helmet. I always think its better to spend a little bit more on a helmet, because God forbid you need it, you want the best on your head! There are some great deals second hand, and I'm sure many here would be willing to advise unbiasedly if you asked them. With regard to the Merida and the Giant...whichever one looks the nicest!! At least enjoy the looks! Sadly, if you are more concerned with the age and not willing to look at an older bike there are some gems here you are missing out on! Nish4 has a Colnago C40 for sale with Campagnolo Record Titanium for R7500, complete bike! That bike is older, but its a classic...will still ride as well, if not better than most new bikes today. Its a lot like this, all your mates are buying new BMW M3's...but you go out and buy a classic Ferrari F355. Sure its older, but who cares? You still have the better ride... My 2c worth.. Most of all, enjoy your riding!
  10. Unbelieveable. Glad they are ok though, good thing you were able to help.
  11. Lots of people swear by things like GU, 32gi and all of these other supplements. If it works for them, then great. That said, what works for me may not work for someone else and I think the best and worst thing about this is learning through trial and error what does work for you. If you plan to use 32gi then use it in training several times before the big race so that you know for sure how your body will react to it. Personally I also feel that we will buy anything over the counter that sounds like it will give us that edge on race day, and yet most of us probably buy on impulse never reading the fine print. ("Use in conjunction with A+B+C, blah blah blah") In the early 1990's a wonder product called 'Maxim' hit the markets and everyone went out to get it. I was one of them, and all it did for me was bloat me up like the Michelin man! My diet never changed, but the creatine within the product apparently caused me to bloat up. Took a trip to a sports doc and a nutritionalist to advise against the product. Turns out Oats also had an adverse effect on me, proving that what may work for another may not work for me! My advice to you mr Madvics would be to use the "Piles of Miles" training plan, eat sufficiently and learn by experience. Just like we all have, and dont put to much hope in snake oils and magic bullets!
  12. I agree with TNT1. I'm 63 years of age, and I have learned many things over decades of cycling. THe most important thing is this, your body is like a bank, and food is like money...the more you put in the more you have to spend when you need it. I eat a lot during the day before the event, and have a big meal the night before. I get up really early to sit and have a big breakfast as well. Cereals alone will never see me to the end of a race. I once used a Leppin sachet of corn syrup during a race in the late 80's and vowed never again. I fill my pockets with raisins, a banana and a sarmie with peanut butter. I pick at the raisins every few kilo's, and eat the banana and sarmie at points I think will be convenient to do so. I drink water, two bottles per hundred kilo's on the road and if I stop at a water point I will have a cup of coke. I have never bonked from coke, but I have bonked from not eating enough. I personally do not feel sachets of energy supplements work for me. But if you are going to use them, use them a few times in training as well so that you can see if they will work for you, or not. There is no substitute for a big hearty meal.
  13. My Litespeed also cracked, although not in the same place. Litespeed said it was ok to continue riding, but I never took the chance. They will honour the warranty claim, but just be prepared for a 'story' with regard to newer models and you having to pay in the difference. Pity, because they are amaazing bikes. I would not risk any further riding to be honest.
  14. Correct. Its not even a convincing copy.
  15. Be carefull, these are most definately scams. Take a look at these two frames and you'll clearly see why you pay so much for the one, and SO much more for the other.
  16. Haha! No, I agree and it was just a thought. Yes, clothes sitting in a cupboard is a little unfair if someone can use them. If I give to charity, my thought is this, 'is this in a condition fit for me to wear?'...if not, then I do not donate it, because if it is good enough for me to wear, it should be in good enough condition for someone else to wear. Charity does not mean we can just throw our old hole riddled clothes onto people we expect to be grateful for them. In the same way as selling clothing on here, it should be in a condition that we are proud to sell it. (no skidmarks!) It was just a thought!
  17. Just a thought...non of us seem willing to buy any second hand clothing, yet most of us are always willing and proud when we donate them to a charity!
