  2. Three years ago the descent was super dodgy - I remember people walking down the pass. I doubt it will be that bad again.

  4. Definitely more than 12%

  6. I know - easy peasy! I've partially torn a hip flexor from a stupid tumble on the second last day of Epic. It's fine on the bike, but I can barely walk
  7. hehe - I'm too selfish to coach. If I gave up my day job I'd just end up riding more! But I'm always keen to share knowledge The Mungu is causing me a lot of existential crises. I know it is definitely on the horizon, and that it should suit my riding style completely, but it's just so damn far! 361kms and I'm ready to not see my bike for weeks!
  8. At 36One, I take this to the next level. I don't even look at my Garmin until the sun comes up, and that's usually with around 90kms to go. I ride completely on feel - that place where it hurts a little bit, but it's a good kind of hurt. From 90kms to go, it's the bad kind hurt! My partner calls it long range white line fever!
  9. I like the mental aspect of having done more kms than I have left
  10. Thankfully for you, there are people out there that have selflessly done this sort of research, and answer these questions. My partner is one of those people, and in 2015 rode the whole way with no light! http://www.velotales.com/2015/04/the-36one-2015.html I personally am not that committed to such endeavours, and would recommend a light that can go the distance - 12hours if you are planning on riding through one night, and 24 hours if you're going for the "value for your money" 2 nights option. I ride most of the way with my light on low, and switch to medium on the occasional downhill. Check the internet for info about charging your particular GPS while riding - there is loads of info out there. Concerning chaffe. HTFU. You might get chaffed, you might not. If you do, then you get an extra reminder of the weekend to take home and show the other half. Clothing - depends on the weather. We've ridden in normal kit with jammers on year, to knee and arm warmers the next. Be prepared for anything, and pack your boxes strategically. Like I've said before, it's just twelve 30km sections. Ride each one and only worry about the current section, and before you know it, you'll be over half way. And once you've done 180kms, what's another 180kms?
  11. It's taken me a while to write, and just thinking about our adventure was enough to tire me out all over again. But here is our ride report from The Big Day Out Outside Villiersdorp Done! Completely done!
  12. Ride this race waterpoint to waterpoint. With that mindset, and the fact that you can't see anything, you end up riding in the now. Listen to your body. Ride what's in front of you at a pace you can handle. It's just 12 waterpoints and you're done. Training - normal intensity stuff during the week, and a couple of long rides on the weekend. You shouldn't have to do anything over 6 hours. Learn to listen to your body. Learn what you like to eat and drink. If you can do 6 hours and still be human afterwards, you'll be fine at 36One.
  13. Off the top off my head: Darling: 1 litre milk, 500ml coke, refilled bottles with water Riebeek Kasteel: 700ml coke, Babalas Burger, refilled bottles with water Wellington: 1 litre coke, refilled bottles with water Tweede Tol (Bainskloof): refilled bottles with water Rawsonville: 1.5 litre coke, Miss Piggy Burger, refilled bottles with water Padstal 20km from Villiersdorp: refilled bottles with water, Extixx gel Villiersdorp: Fanta Grape, refilled bottles with water Base of Franschhoek Pass: Etixx Gel Franschoek: refilled bottles with water Somerset West: Rehydrat, tea, tomato soup, peanut butter toast x4 (bottles weren't always empty) There were 3 of us, which always meant one guy was left out of the conversation. (The upside was that same guy would get to wheelsuck).
  14. We've been trying for 4 years now to knock off 400kms - there was no way we were going give up so early. It was a different story at 300kms - if there'd been an easy way to get home I suspect we would have taken it!
  15. Yup - tried to avoid the traffic lights Then you'll understand how I feel right now! Outside Darling - 100kms in Halfway up Bains - 40C Sunset next to the dam - 60kms to go Almost there - 10pm and 20kms to go Blog post to follow sometime when my brain has returned to normal
  16. We did a little ride yesterday from Cape Town to Somerset West:
  17. Meurant did say that if Lance did his usual puke at 2 in the morning trick he would personally cut off his pony tail!
  18. My race report is here: http://www.velotales.com/2017/02/oak-valley-24hr-2017.html I can't believe I'm already thinking about next year...
  19. I can't tell if the new lap was easier or harder than the old lap. I rode just as hard, and kakked off just much. I am however grateful that I didn't ride my hardtail! Just because we were riding together doesn't mean we weren't duking it out. This event is only about 40% physical, the rest is all mind games, strategy and mental toughness. I don't have a problem with aggression - I have a problem with manners. And while I can deal with a schoolboy being a bit rude, it wasn't cool seeing moms and their kids being yelled at to get off the track. Win, but keep it cordial.
  20. Don't sell us roadies short The backup and support crews make this event possible. I reckon it's easier to ride than have to worry about nutrition, fluid intake, timing, strategy etc. In fact, Meurant told me to give my prize money to my wife, as she is the real star
  21. Iron man, Ashburton, Oakvalley. Seems like a crazy weekend of sport. I liked this new route. More pedally bits coming down from the top and more passing opportunities, although I hated those bumps too, all 31 times I rode them!
  22. http://mm.aiircdn.com/158/271769.jpg aaaah
  23. What's the W?
  24. https://twitter.com/dirtopia/status/824848104293699586 Rumour has it that the singletrack downhill section from the top is out.
