  1. So, I had a little incident with law enforcement yesterday (#piggate of another sort). The short version - a Stellenbosch Traffic Officer eventually told me "I don't care about your safety". What I learned is that Traffic officers don't like it when you give them (innocent) hand signals. Here is the long version in a letter I've sent to various people:
  2. CSA knew about this ages ago - so long to release the news?
  3. YAWYD stem caps should be mandatory! And derailleur hangers.
  4. Was keen to see how he went at the World Champs, but I see he didn't start.
  5. RSA19910524 CROESER Rourke SOUTH AFRICA DNS Any one know anything?
  6. Finally put the Lauf TR29 on my bike last week. It certainly is different, but you get used to the looks quite quickly. The one thing that I have trained myself to stop doing is looking at the wheel while riding - it's all over the place, and you can quickly make yourself seasick staring at it. It looks like something is about to break with catastrophic consequences. Otherwise, it rides nicely - completely soaking up road noise and knocking the edges of bigger bumps. The lack of rebound dampening does take a bit of getting used to, but the plus side is that it's very easy to preload the fork when wanting to hop over objects. The front end feels light and super responsive, and I'm still getting used to the ease with which the bike steers (that's code for saying that my bike currently takes me for a ride, and I pretty much just try to hang on!). And my bike is now 600 grams lighter.
  7. Go to the police station, report the accident, and then get hold of your/her insurance and try to sort this out...

  9. Photoshopped. This is the actual image: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ONCz78bv4Vc/Uzmbb7pEc5I/AAAAAAAAOh4/FpXswikBkM4/s1600/italian+minister.jpg

  12. Plenty of options out there - SportsDevil for live TV (mainly sport) on KODI/XBMC, and torrents for TV shows. A handy site I found for cycling torrents: http://cyclingtorrents.nl/
  13. Hmm - new blood in the neighbourhood - going to have to keep an eye out on my KOMS. Youngsters these days!
  14. My newest bike is the Cervelo R5 - red and charcoal. That bike even intimidates me, not because of the noise it makes, but because it just wants to go faster all the time. An LSD ride is impossible! I have an old white and silver Niner A.I.R. 9 that doesn't get ridden nearly enough (currently has a baby seat on it) Otherwise, it's been a lean spell for new bikes...
  15. I spent a week in Oloron-Sainte-Marie in France - home of a Lindt factory. It's the the closest I think I'll ever get to heaven. The entire town smells of chocolate, and they have a factory shop selling Lindt at ridiculously cheap prices. Thankfully, it's on the doorstep to the Pyrenees, so I could eat chocolate and ride bikes. Again - pure heaven!
  16. Cool review Jarryd - pretty much my experience with the Edge 1000 (except for the out front bracket - I think you're doing something wrong ). I've managed to get 12 hours out of the Edge 1000 - two back to back 6hr rides, getting home with 5% left. It is a pricey gadget, but it's not just a GPS - it's a display unit for all other ANT+ devices, and as more and more of them enter the market, I think Garmin is trying to be the de facto head unit. And I have to agree about the sweat - I've found myself navigating to Estonia before (seems quite simple - a left turn here, a short right there, several thousand kilometres later you'll reach your destination).
  17. I really need to look around when riding - done both races several times and never seen either!
  18. Thanks. It was a dodgy tempo ride! This is part of the email exchange I had with The Coach: "My tempo the next day seemed to start out ok (Strava said I rode some good solid segments), my legs felt tender, and after 2 hours I popped. I had to stop for a coke and chocolate just to get home. And then, while lying on the couch, watching TV, I had the worst cramps I have had in years. Every muscle in both legs ganged up on me. We've changed our objectives from a podium to just not dying. I suspect I might have to get my money's worth and spend a bit more time than usual at the water points ;)" Needless to say, she doesn't believe me either any more...
  19. Still have to follow up on that. I'm super keen to see how it works out. Not expecting Jean Biermans kind of speeds, but should make for an interesting ride Thanks. Such a crazy crazy crazy event. And yet there is something magical about it (I say that now sitting in the comfort of my warm cosy home).
  20. We could do that, but there isn't the commitment to stay together. And there were prizes for teams
  21. While I didn't ride solo, we finished in "5th" place overall. And I'm not 40 Well done to Jean - what a stellar ride, and to everyone else who rode. One seriously hardcore event.
  22. Well written, and well ridden. You've captured the essence of 24hr racing perfectly, the grit, the determination, the pain, the elation, the dark patches and the commitment. That leading lady is seriously hardcore - Amanda Brooks won the 40-44 women’s category at last year's World 24hr Champs in Fort William, Scotland. And further proof that slow and steady is often better that fast and flakey. Have you recovered yet? Should be bulletproof on the bike round about now.
  23. We're not top end cyclists. We're big fish in a small pond here in the Western Cape. I'd say that the only event attracting the real race snakes is Nationals. If Fun Rider World Champs is the epitome of racing in South Africa we are in quite a dire state. I reckon it's the other way round - the race snakes come to do TdB and stay on to do the CTCT... And yet, we have a real South African team riding the Tour de France this year. Despite (or because of) the way cycling is run, we are still able to produce world class riders, managers, soigneurs etc.
