  1. Check most of the pictures of the pros, rear is on the right, same as the gears- front dérailleur left, rear on right. Logical! Although my track bikes are set up differently!
  2. +100
  3. Sad, sad news. R.I.P. Mervyn.
  4. +1000
  5. I must be out of the loop then, I have no idea who it could be.
  6. Fair enough - thanks for the info. Probably not going to stop people speculating though.
  7. So, who is it then?
  8. I'll second that - Lizle is very on-the-ball.
  9. Dont know which hurts more today my rear end or my shoulders from trying to shoulder charge some of those trees in the twisty bits. Glad I'm not the only one who was "shoulder charging" trees in the early hours.
  10. Great event with a great atmosphere. Big up to Wendell and his team. Will definitely be back next year - better prepared!
  11. @Big Ben, yes I'm entered in a mixed team of four - looking forward to it!
  12. If you are, pray that the rain stays away!
  13. Yay - Track Bike!!
  14. Me too
  15. Woohoo, looks like the Sani2C third event is on! Now we wait until the 6th to see who got in
  16. Average about 26-32 kph depending on weather and traffic. But the speed is largely dictated by the group - if we have a wide range of abilities we'll look at seperate groups in the future.
  17. We are begining our spring training season on Tuesday the 6th. Meet at the Sasol garage on the corner of Van Buuren and Norman roads in Bedfordview - ready to leave at 05h00. Intermediate ride of between 40 to 50 km. All welcome. Verni Cycling Cub
  18. Morning, Our group is starting spring training on Tuesday the 6th, leaving the Sasol garage on the corner of Van Buuren and Norman roads at 05h00. Approximately 40-50 km, intermediate ride - all welcome.
  19. Reynolds is a British tube manufacturer and their various grades of steel tubing were designated by numbers: 501, 531, 753 etc. Columbus is an Italian company whose grades of tube were designated by letters and names: SL, SLX, Cromor etc. Each manufacturer used whatever tubing they either preferred or had been specified by the client or team.
  20. Today is the first day of the rest of your life!
  21. There don't appear to be regulations governing track length. The modern standard has gravitated to 250m as this makes all races a set number of laps and it's easier, and cheaper to cover a 250m track as many of the European tracks are covered for weather conditions. As mentioned previously, the track at the UCI hq in Aigle, Switzerland is 200 metres long - why? No one could tell me. In the old days (present day for Jo'burg riders) riding metric distances on a track built to imperial specifications meant starting at odd positions around the track to ensure that the race finished at the finish line. The old 500 yard track equates to 457 mteres and was designed to fit around the outside of a playing field and athletics track. There is still evidence of the old running track on the inside of Hector Norris park in JHB. Regarding trackstands, I am not sure of the record, but they used to go on for a looong time in the old days. These days a track stand is limited (I'm not sure of the exact time allowable; I was never a sprinter) but an official will start a stopwatch when a rider starts a trackstand. Shortest race is the 200 metre sprint. Not sure if record has been kept of the slowest time (although I can think of a few candidates).
  22. Not quite - the modern standard is 250m - although the track at the World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland is 200m, go figure. Most of the existing tracks are 457m long, or 500 yards as they were built in the fifties and sixties. Some 333m tracks exist (there is one in Durban), but they are in the minority. The only 333m track in a covered velodrome, of which I am aware, is the olympic track in Moscow.
  23. In these days of "don't care" attitudes and slack service; it's an absolute pleasure to do business with companies like ASG. I bought a pair of Rudy Project Genetyk glasses on auction last week- I did the transfer on Friday and the package arived at my office 10 minutes ago! Now that's what I call service (as well as getting a R2,5k pair of glasses and a t-shirt for R810.00!)
  24. I used cheap KMC 1/8th BMX chains on the track for many years - never had a problem with stretching. Either you're extremely powerful or it's a shite chain.
