  1. how do you fit them on a wing bar? They all look like need to slide on from the outside...

  3. Love this race. See you there!
  4. At Ironman South Africa this year a guy got disqualified 200m from the finish for outside assistance after his (non-competing) mate ran with him for a bit. It was adjudged to be pacing. This after a day marked by 80km/h winds, ugly choppy seas and a very cold run in the rain... Rules is rules.
  5. Not kidding, perhaps just not on top of the particular flavor of the sport that Theresa Ralph distinguishes herself in. Thanks DJR, now the bits come together.
  6. Yes indeed. One of the best MTB experiences you'll ever have. The riding isn't very tough, but the scenery, wildlife (leopard, PLENTY of elephant, crocodile just to list the bigger ones), sleeping right on the Limpop... Absolutely unbelievable experience, go for it! And don't forget to take at least 2 derailleur hangers for your frame.
  7. Tribes is a really fantastic shop. Nice layout, great range of brands and friendly and helpful staff. SBR, much smaller range, great attitude. Troisport, too important to deal with customers mostly. Only open till 2 on a Saturday. Apparently business isn't the priority here... And if you think there is lots of hype in triathlon, come along and give it a try. Nothing to lose in experiencing something new.
  8. Garmin is the way. Having them direct in SA is a huge bonus. Every product has its issues, and Garmin are way farther up the maturity curve than anyone else. The real deal-breaker is what happens when you DO need to resolve something. I was standing in the start chute at Buffelspoort Ultra Tri with my own brand new 910 from CRC, and told the guy next to me that i wasn't concerned about local support as I had never really needed it before. 910 filled with water on that first swim and I ended up needing warranty support that very day! it got sorted here with no issues. I have owned (and mostly still do) every model of Cycling Garmin since the first Edge models, and the last 2 versions of Forerunner, and the evolution has been amazing. Wholeheartedly recommended.

    2012 Ironman

Yeah, I used to put my 310 in my cap. 910 needs to be on the arm so the accelerometers can get your stroke metrics. They have improved the swim tracking algorithm also in the 910. I have no doubt the actual course was spot on, and the current and wind was pushing us around all over the show. Spent a fair amount of time just trying to get those darned buoys to come closer

Some interesting comments about the swim distance being around 5km according to Garmin. My 910XT also measured 4.8km...
  11. Any waterproof GPS device, preferably under your swimcap. Garmin 310 works better under the cap, 910 better on the arm due to the accelerometer. In the pool, Swimovate or Swimsense or 910XT will do your lapcounts, stroke counts, Efficiency Index nd SWOLF for you. and incidentally, I also measured a MUCH longer distance for the IMSA swim this year...
  12. Yeah also saw him. Saw some Spinergy RevX's that also crept past the scrutineers.
  13. The important thing to know is that the setup on a Tri bike is very different to a TT setup. For Tri the trick is to get as comfortable as possible in the bars to get as much of the aero advantag as possible over AS LONG A PERIOD as possible. The setup will allow you to take the strain off your back and still stay nice and low. For IM you are looking at 180km, so anything around 5-6 or so hours. For pure TT the setup is focussed on getting maximum power output for the 50 or so kilometers of a typical road TT, so comfort isn't necessarily a primary consideration. Many guys use roadbikes for TT, but I found great benefit in the switch. Again, understand that a TT bike is virtually useless for anything else other than non-drafting triathlons and road TT's.
  14. Got my new 910XT from CRC and was extremely excited to give it a first go at Bufflespoort Ultra. 1 small problem, it wasn't waterproof... Came out of the water half-full! to their credit CRC refunded me with no questions asked, but Flange just had exactly the same experience with his! Is this a hidden feature? (my new NEW one seems to be holding up OK, but 2 out of three isn't odds, its probabilities...)

So what, pray tell, would a "REAL MTB rider" be?
  16. Is THIS WHAT we are talking about? http://www.bikeradar.com/blog/article/testing-the-power2max-and-look-keo-power-pedals-32678/
  17. Agree with Zerin. There I was hot and heavy, now just heavy... What is a "Power2Max" and will it look sexy on my bike?
  18. That would be very surprising. Also, it is a bit early. Normally routes etc only start being discussed around mid-year.
  19. Price is the determinant. The products are virtually interchangable commodities.
  20. Actually a number of them used to, until there was the very serious threat of legal liability against them after someone injured himself on a teeter-totter they had built. Not really anything in it for them besides for the threat of getting sued, having their reputations dragged through the mud all over the net and the press, and still having to put up with the schlep of actually maintaining the route. You would do better with a club or 2, these exist purely for those who want to ride, and hence a more natural fit.
  21. try hooking up the jozimultisport.co.za they are based at Dabulamanzi and organise lots of training activities.
  22. and def a pic. Such a unique bike has to be easy to identify.
