  1. They haven't for 20 odd years They've moved on tremendously from the old image of khakie klere en kappies, parade staan etc etc. Some of the newer specializations that get taught include 4x4 driving, scuba diving, sailing etc. Have a look (if you're interested) at https://www.facebook.com/DieVoortrekkers/ as well as https://www.facebook.com/Wilgedraai/ at some of the activities they get up to. It's most definitely not the Voortrekkers I attended at school 25 odd years ago.
  2. Cool. I still teach sailing to the high school Voortrekkers, was an occifer for ~10 years or so but got fed up with the politics (not the country type politics, the inter-personal politics) and the people in charge who have no qualification to be in charge. Klein mannetjie / Dominees se vrou sindroom.
  3. I'd also just like to thank everyone for the messages and calls of support. It means a lot - thanks!
  4. Her 14 year old brother crossed the street seconds before her, on his bike, her 11 year old brother had dropped his chain half a block earlier and my wife, whom was following the bunch (in her i10 ) stopped to help him. She was literally half a block behind the scene. I try and teach my kids 'selfstandigheid', but that does not include riding willy-nilly on their bikes. This was the first time my daughter ventured further than a block from home (this happened 3 blocks from home) but won't be the last. The two boy ride their bikes to and from school every couple of weeks, with live location sharing on. All the kids have helmets and don't go anywhere on a bike, even in the yard, without them. This has most definitely paid off in this accident. The ironic thing in all this was that they were on their way to a 'Voortrekker' cycling safety presentation. She's doing great, fortunately the docs summed her up nicely and made the cast 1) pink and 2) waterproof so she's been swimming and running and even attempted a bike ride yesterday. It's a mission for her to do most things, like eating (we're pretty big on the 'eat proper home cooked food at the table with fork, knife and manners' so not much one-handed pizzas and burgers) but she is somewhat milking the attention. As far as the police case goes, the docket for the accident has been found, and we are in discussion with a fair number of people regarding the hit-and-run case. I'll give more details after Thursday evening when we are having a sit-down with the dad and daughter combo. Our friendly family friend judge may or may not make an appearance as well.
  5. I was first on a black and green Axis then on black and yellow Merida - used to ride past you up Stead road uphill near Queens Corner I remember we chatted about commuting on here ages ago.
  6. Fits the demographic really well ... but no confirmation (or speculation on that from our side). To keep it simple it's failing to stop at a stop sign, causing and accident and fleeing the scene of an accident.
  7. Mwhaaaa ha ha ha .... yeah no blue vs charcoal fortunately.
  8. My initial thoughts as well, and I'd be sympathetic to that, but then she lied right in front of the cops to my face about stopping and helping. There's just NO accountability, just fear of prosecution.
  9. Thanks - and don't worry, the double-walk hailgun and shovel is ready for her first boyfriend. Also, absolutely no need to milk it - there's no short supply of KFC (her favourite) or Milky Bars ****************************** Redacted Ha ha .. my wife drives one as well.
  10. 18. Got her licence in October last year. I won't go the social media route. If the law fails there's other options

Fortunately I know a few people in the right places - the local station commander is a friend as well as a few lawyers as well as a good few prosecutors and a judge (or two) ... most of whom I met through cycling. I'd be happy to let her spend some jail time and permanently lose her licence - she is not fit to drive.
  12. My daughter (9 years old) was cycling to school on Monday afternoon when she was hit by a lady in an i10 after failing to stop at a stop street. After driving over my daughter's arm and hand she proceeded to floor it and tried to make a getaway. Ambulance attended to my daughter, cracked Radius and also cracked some small bones in the hand but it does not seem as if she will need physio, just a pretty pink cast for a good few weeks (ages when you're 9) Unfortunately for the driver: 1) There's a security company's camera(s) recording that corner 2) There were 3 people handing out Fibre installation pamphlets who saw the whole thing and are willing to testify 3) There was a lawyer at one of the other 3 stop streets that pursued the i10, found her and got her back to the accident scene. Also very pissed off and willing to testify. Her family arrived at the scene and tried to kick up a bit of a fuss about 'babies' on bicycles, but was quickly shut up by the bystanders. Fortunately I arrived a few minutes after this. So the cops eventually arrived on scene and did a spectacularly poor job as per usual. It now seems as if the docket has disappeared as well ... ffs. We're opening a new one later today if they can't find it. A few things that really, really pisses me off:1) She just drove off. Sure, it may be attributed to shock, BUT2) She denied having hit anything or anybody when the lawyer confronted her at her home after chasing her down. There's paint missing from the driver's door where she hit my daughter's bike.3) Her dad wanted me to 'not report it as a hit and run' so that she wouldn't be arrested, and he would cover the costs involved (maybe not a bribe but said in the same breath) This I could almost, just about agree to seeing as to the alleged perpetrator's demographics BUT4) She came over to 'apologize' to me whilst I was talking to the cops and said she stopped and asked if my girl is ok - something neither the eyewitnesses, lawyer nor camera footage confirms. All in all, my daughter is ok apart from not being able to play in the netball or tennis teams anymore, and possibly losing out on performing with her ballet troupe in the State Theatre in July. The lady wasn't arrested on scene, but a case of hit and run was opened (not 100% sure on the legal terms here)
  13. HR normally requires it to see how much tax you have already paid thus financial year and then calculate how much you need to pay for the rest of the year on your new salary. But it does seem that they made you a lowball offer base on your last salary ... which I wouldn't accept. IMHO you should have discussed salary with them in the interview.
  14. I think I'm going to try a bit of smoked warthog in the same fashion next ... now where did I put my 308?
  15. Tried something different last week - mini pork wellington.s Cut a pork fillet into 8cm lengths, pan fried with a little butter, left to cool. Smeared with American Mustard. Fried up some diced mushroom, finely chopped onions, garlic and some fresh rosemary, thyme and oregano out of the garden. Put this mixture on some puff pastry sheets, then a fillet on top and baked in the oven for ~30 minutes. Served with baby potatoes and pan fried patty pans and green beans. Was pretty damn good. My son sent me the photo afterwards
  16. Cabinet I delivered on Friday - had a bit of a struggle with the soft-close slides but the I had an 'A-Ha' moment and figured the little buggers out. Took a few good slaps to the handlanger to explain to him about the third part of the slide on the inside where the bearings run/move and that they need to be properly aligned otherwise the slides just don't work (and spill little balls everywhere)
  17. I've got a bit of a flyer of a question here - hopefully you'll indulge my research a bit. How does your typical weekly veggie shopping trip look like? Ie what do you buy for a week's worth of cooking? (By the royal 'you' I'm asking veganists in general)
  18. Joinery with a little carpentry thrown in to keep the wolves at bay end of the month. I do a fair bit of cabinetmaking (as trade, not necessarily cabinets) Used it as a blanket term like 'houtwerker' - but even that will get my arse kicked
  19. Any other carpenters suddenly hit with a big inflow of work? Seems as if every carpenter I know (in Pretoria) is getting snowed under since last week. Not complaining, I'm glad to have a lot of work. Just strange timing.
  20. Second hand wooden furniture is a hit-and-miss affair. You can try Sinkhuis(ie) antiques in Soutpansberg road as well as Geran Meubels (used to be in Soutpans as well but I heard they moved) I've had some luck selling stuff for clients there, but don't expect top dollar. Other options for more dollar is to get one or both the above places to valuate your furniture and the list it for that price on Gumtree and Junkmail online.
  21. Made a sign for a barber over the 'silly season' Will be going up tomorrow (indoors)
