  1. Hunter Allen's Comments: 3 hours and 6 minutes of climbing up HC cols today. 3 HOURS. From the stage profile, it looked like it was all climbing! Beside some early accelerations, today was just survival for Adam. Making it in with the group and before the time cut was the order of business. Over 5000 kJ's, but only a TSS of 309, which makes it a long ride, but not too intense. I am sure those first accelerations hurt after the rest day, but I also know Adam was glad to have it. On the Lombarde climb, Adam rode a nice steady tempo, but by the time the Bonette-Restefond climb came around, which was 2 hours long!, it was endurance pace.

  3. Hunter Allen's Comments: Rainy day in the Tour today. Adam had to cover some early attacks, but that didn't last too long before the main break of the day went away. Thank goodness, because in less than an hour, the HC category climb Col de Agnel began! A bit over an hour long climb for Adam and then a big chase down the other side to catch up to the main field. On the climb, Adam set a steady pace at sub-threshold for the first 40minutes of the climb and then the last 20 minutes, the pace picked up and he had to dig closer to his threshold in order to be near the front for the descent. The next challenge for the day was to hang on for dear life while the CSC team drove the pace at the front for a solid hour. Adam rode in single file for nearly an hour with a normalized power of 350 watts! Then they don't call it the Colle de Morte for nothing. Adam gets popped here and then rides in with the Sprinter group. A nice easy pace up the last climb at lower tempo pace to the finish. All in all another tough stage, but Adam handled it well. Rest day tomorrow! WOO HOO!
  4. Hunter Allen's Comments: HOT day today in the Tour. 42C or 107F! That's a hot day by anyone's standards. Adam's standard pattern and orders from the Team Director were again in place today. Cover all the early breaks, then be there in the end for Mark if needed. Adam's first hour was at a NP of 350, and was spent covering a lot of attacks. After that hour, it was a lazy ride to the final climb of the day, the Col de l'Orme. In those last 35 minutes of the stage, Adam averaged 399 Watts Normalized and was right below and at his FTP for much of that time. He made it over the short 4-5 minute climb with the main group(some chasing on the downhill), and then rode at the front, presumably for Gerard Ciolek and Kim Kirchen. Gerard is a great sprinter in his own right and with Cavendish not making the front split, he had a chance to go for the stage win. Great to see Adam give it his all for his teammates yet again. His last 10minutes of effort looks similar to previous stages with a NP of 449 watts and HR at 164. Plenty of kJ's burned today at 4033, even though he spent 40% of his stage in the active recovery zone... kiloCalories are about 10% over that, so he burned around 4400 calories today. I can imagine that he's a bit tired of eating all the time by now, but with another big stage coming tomorrow, re-fueling will be important.

  7. Yup, I chatted to Andrew about it the other day, he is not a selector. Seems like the selections were based only on the results at nationals. Maybe a bit more transparency about selection criteria would be nice. National champs need to be selected, no doubt about that, but I think this year there has been enough quality Vets racing for the selectors to get a good view of who the best riders are, consistently.
  8. Hunter Allen's Comments: Finally a day that Adam didn't have to cover the early moves! 37% in active recovery zone and 22% of the total time spent NOT pedaling. O.k., now it's looking good to make it over these Alps for Adam! He's gotten 3 days of 'relative' rest and that's good. Have you noticed that his TSB is starting to climb 'positively'? It's still way deep in the -80's, but thats better than the -117 on Tuesday the 15th! Really, today, only the last 30 minutes of the stage was their action for Adam, and then it was ACTION. Check out the pulls he takes in the last 8 minutes alone! He and Markus were DRILLING IT at the front. How about over 550watts at over 42mph with 110 cadence? Yes, you saw that correctly....42mph !!!! I guess when you KNOW you have a stage winner on your wheel, then you can ride faster than before. Score #4 for Cavendish! With Adam and Markus on the front, I don't see anyone able to beat Cavendish. From CyclingNews, ....Cavendish was asked whether he does any special training for the bunch sprints, Cavendish replied: "I just ride my bike. I enjoy it. I sometimes do a bit of sprint training. But I have a really great team that pulls very hard for me in the final kilometres."... That says it all right there and this file is from one of the guys that helps him win stages. Enjoy!

  11. No, I don't think they'll post Cavendish's stats - I think they are happy to post the domestiques, but stage winners are kept secret.
  12. Hunter Allen's Comments: 3 times a charm! Adam helped Mark Cavendish score another stage win today. Just look at the last 7 minutes of Adam's ride today. He was an integral part to the stage win and drilled it hard in those last kilometers to keep Mark in the front. What a great job by Mark. Very impressive. Mark didn't have to do too much today until the end, so I am sure he appreciated the active recovery, which was the zone he was in for 30% of the stage. This stage scored the lowest TSS for the stage besides the time trial, so for sure it has been the easiest stage for Adam. Of course, Adam had his duties to attend to in the beginning of the stage by covering the attacks, for over 21 minutes, his Normalized Power was up there in the 415wattage range. Then the stage calmed down a bit and Adam was able to spend plenty of time not pedaling and coasting along in the group. Only near the end of the stage did he have to move back up to the front, make sure Mark was in position and then get to work in driving the pace with Markus Burghardt. He spent the last 19 minutes at or near his FTP and then the last 7 minutes over his threshold pushing the pace as hard as he could in order to keep Mark out of the wind. Great job ADAM!

  15. Hunter Allen's Comments: Look at those watts in the first 35 minutes.... That's gotta hurt after a rest day! That's a lot of covering attacks and going with accelerations there. Luckily it didn't last too long and Adam was able to recover and relax for a while. 20% of his time not pedaling today, so a good day to recover before the climb of Col de Portal. Once on the Portal, Adam was solidly in his sub-threshold/tempo zone for most of it. Perfect for saving energy for the rest of the stages and finishing in a good group. One contrast from this day to the previous flatter stages is the fact that once Adam is in his established group, then it's a steady pace to the finish. The last hour is not too hard, which is a nice pace compared to the previous stages of hammering in the last hour. Just a note, Adam did an easy 2 hour ride yesterday, and I assigned him 35 TSS points.

  17. Hunter Allen's Comments: Survival Part 2..... get to the finish, get over the climbs. That's all you have to do! Adam did a great job of just surviving today and doing anything he could for the team. Tons of time at sub threshold and threshold again today and not much time spent not pedaling. Hard to rest when you are going uphill! A sub 58 minute time up the Tourmalet with normalized power of 378 watts. VERY impressive.Great climbing for a non-climber! On the Hautacam finishing climb, Adam averaged 349 watts normalized power for a 52 minute time up the climb. Notice the cadence that Adam climbs at when he is steadily climbing- around 80 rpm, which is relatively high, but a nice steady cadence. Keep it going Adam!

  19. Lower tempo for some is upper VO2Max for others
  20. He he, he rode the last climb at lower Tempo intensity. The skinny buggers have come out to play now!
  21. According to my calculations, his TSB went below -100 - holy cr@p
  22. Hunter Allen's Comments: Survival for Adam today. Nothing much besides that on the docket. Cover some moves at the beginning of the stage and then survive to the finish. Big climbs today at the end of the stage today and Adam pushed hard at the front for the first 9 minutes on the Peyresourde, after that it's just making it to the finish. 6hours in the saddle, nearly 350 TSS and 5800kJ's. Ouch, that's some serious Training Stress and a lot of pasta to eat in the evening!
