  4. Andrew, can you give me some more details on the Cyclelab rides, how long are they, where do they go?
  5. Cool, just shout if there is anything that is not clear. The Carmichael Field Test would yeild results that would be an indication of your power at VO2Max, not power at Lactate Threshold.
  6. Is this the Carmichael Field Test? Unfortunately WKO+ doesn't work with the Carmichael Zones. If you are planning to use WKO+ (which I believe is the best software to use if you are planning to train with power) then you need to establish you FTP. The Coggan Levels are well accepted, and are based on Functional Threshold Power - i.e. maximum sustainable power for 60min. Take a look at the following blog entry: http://alex-cycle.blogspot.com/2008/05/seven-deadly-sins.html bruce2008-08-01 11:36:28
  7. Hunter Allen's Comments: The final TT of the tour. Looks like Adam had about 19 minutes of hard effort at his FTP in his legs today and then he had to do the best he could after that. After the first 19minutes, we noticably see Adam's HR and wattage drop and continue that way to the end of the TT. Of interest is how quickly he pedals in a TT and just how consistent he is with his cadence. All in all a solid day for Adam and not more can be expected of this hard working domestique. Maybe he'll be able to do something tomorrow in the final stage in Paris!

  9. Hunter Alan's Comments: Congratulations ADAM! You did it! What a great tour and finish in Paris. Most of the day was spent riding easy and enjoying the last stage, over 50% of the stage was spent in Active Recovery zone and 28% of the time spent NOT pedaling today. A normalized power of 197 watts for nearly 3 hours gave everyone a chance to breath easy and joke around in the tour. In the last hour in Paris though, the race was on like normal. 359 watts normalized in the last 58 minutes at an average speed of 30.9mph! Adam had his hands full trying to keep things together for Ciolek and the final sprint. Those last 7 minutes, as we have seen in the past, are full gas with Adam averaging 463 watts normalized for the time at a average speed of 33.3mph. It paid off with a fine 2nd place finish by Ciolek and had not Steegmans made the brilliant move that he did, Team Columbia might had scored another stage win! Look for articles on Adam's data on our site in the future and thanks again to SRM for providing us and you with this amazing data set. Till Next year- Hope you have enjoyed the analyses. -Hunter Allen

  11. Hunter Allen's Comments: Thanks again to SRM for providing us with this great data in this year's tour. It's truly exciting to see exactly what these riders have to do, day in and day out. Having the SRM data really allows everyone to further enjoy and understand just exactly how hard of a race the TDF is. Nothing too special with today's stage. With the climbing coming almost right at the start, this had the effect of neutralizing much of the typical first hour attacks. Adam made it over the first climb fine, but definitely had to work for it as he was probably just at his FTP or a touch below it. It's hard to say if his FTP has dropped now because of extreme fatigue, but I would suspect so. His HR is definitely suppressed with an avg of only 154 for the 21 minute climb. After that, much of the stage was just some good riding in the bunch and making sure he made it to the end. A couple of climbs made him put out some effort, but nothing too dangerous. In the last 15miles, he had to get serious again and get ready to lead out his teammate Gerard Ciolek for a possible 3rd place or even a win. While he pulled hard at the front, the chase started too late to catch Chavanel and Roy. Those last 7 minutes were pretty intense as Adam averaged 455 watts and did a full out sprint in the end to launch Ciolek. His last pull/sprint was quite impressive with 1187 watts max and 785watts avg for 26 seconds. Very, Very good. TT tomorrow Adam and then the final Parade to Paris!

  13. I don't disagree that the same logic should be applied to all modern equipment - it very much should be!! All I'm saying is that a single good performance using a product does not constitute conclusive evidence - that same logic should be applied to all equipment. I said on another thread that there is a proper study being performed down at Rhodes University, which I am actually providing some equipment for. There are probably 5 or 6 very good explanations as to why the results yesterday were the way they were: Evans is pretty stuffed - he has not reacted well to the pressure and has been isolated on a number of occasions.Sastre was highly motivated.Sastre has been protected by his team and has only really had to make one telling effort.Sastre has not given his max in previous TT's, wherear Evans has. I don't recall Sastre having to ride a TT with so much counting on it.Sastre did not actually win the TT, he held on to yellow, that is all.By the looks of things, Sastre also had some better TT equipment on his bike - Evans wasn't even wearing shoe covers if I saw correctly. The QRings may have given him an advantage - this could be just one of the explanations. Equipment manufacturers just love this type of anecdotal evidence. It get's thousands of cyclists ruching out to buy their products all the time.
  14. Well, let's look at the evidence. There have been approximately 104 TdF's, but let's take post war as 65 TdF's. Let's round it off to about 1200 stages in total. Number of stages won using Rotor Rings, vs. number of stages won using normal rings. And you are using one stage result (not even a win mind you) to claim that the debate is now over for good? Somehow I don't think the stats hold up so well

  16. Hunter Allen's Comments: 31?C Markus Burghardt, 18th stage TDF WINNER!!!! This is it! What it takes to win a stage in the Tour! Markus did a phenomenal job today and was super aggressive and obviously wanted it bad. He was in the initial breakaway, but then that was caught and then he escaped again wth Feillu, only to drop Feillu on the Col De Parmenie. He caught Barredo on the descent and the two worked well together to the finish which was a 2hours and 52 minute effort with a normalized power of 309 watts. With 10k to go, the excitement started with Barredo attacking on the last climb the Cote de Sorbiers. Markus repeatedly answered those attacks with huge 1300-1500 peak watt efforts and averages between 700-900 watts. Markus fires off his own attack, but Barredo was able to bring him back. In the final sprint, Markus achieved his Peak 5 second wattage for the day with a 1347 watt effort and the entire final sprint lasted 16 seconds for an average of 958 watts. That is a SERIOUS sprint! A very impressive one indeed, especially after all the attacks that Barredo made and also having been in the breakaway(both of them!) for nearly 4 hours of a 4 hours 30 minutes stage. Congratulations Markus!

  18. Hunter Allen's Comments: 32?C Adam Hansen, 18th stage TDF Adam had the same open leash today that Markus had, and from the looks of his file, he was trying just as hard as Markus was to get in the break of the day. He spent about 41 minutes near the front and attacking and going with attacks to get into the break, only to not get in the right combination or time. Once his teammate Markus went away, then it was shut it down time and conserve energy. Only on the climbs did Adam have to push a bit to make it over in the front group, but make it over the climbs today he did. Finishing in 23rd place today was his highest placing in a stage and after the big mountains it was quite an accomplishment to make it in the main bunch today. Great job Adam!

  20. Hunter Allen's Comments: Nearly 4 hours of climbing today. Nothing but up and down. Tempo in the saddle, stay with the group and finish under the time cut. That was the goal. Adam did well and finished another stage! Almost there. Just look at the kJ's burned today! Almost 6500! That is serious. 381 TSS accumulated today at an intensity level of .749. Tons of tempo! Loads of Heart Rate suppression going on today as well, and Adam was barely able to get his HR over 150, as compared to easily getting it in the 180 range at the beginning of the tour. He's just a little bit tired! Great Job all around Adam. You made it through the last mountain stage!!!
