  1. Which did you get?
  2. I often get onto the Spruit at 12th(Cowley)/Devonshire and then go upwards. If it's dark I'll go back via roads.
  3. Excellent to meet everyone, hopefully there's lots more of those. I may have to change my process to start riding from down-river. The feeling of being stuck in traffic I usually laugh at, on the way to a ride, hurt my soul. Karma - shout when you start at Paulshof area, I'll try keep up
  4. 30 minutes of roaming around a parking lot instead of riding?! That's very uncool - have to tighten up the timing.
  5. I might wander up (today) from Rivonia, but too far from you lot. Jcza - pm me if you want to meet up.
  6. Ok, doesn't sound too terrible. I have lots on that day, but I'd really love to go.
  7. I've been waiting for one of these for years. I really loved the one at Northern Farm and I'm aching to try the Pyga. But Harties? Seriously? Are they optimizing for increased tourism in the north west? Hour there, hour back, less time for riding.
  8. You are a queen amongst women. All men should be so lucky Mine fetches me new kit on her trips overseas, but no "I've researched these bikes for you. Pick one"
  9. I...I just don't want to kill anyone again. It's therapist, lawyer, then spruit. Then therapist, probably. If I bite anyone's wheel, I'm sorry.
  10. 80% chance I'll join - have to meet with lawyer before then. Be nice to meet y'all
  11. I "did" your scout hall jump yesterday. Meaning roll up to it apprehensively, barely make it over the first table-top type thing, then veer off before I hurt myself. Seriously, a different world
  12. Where do you work? I can go up from Paulshof/Rivonia at 4, so shout if you can't wait for the 5:30pm Spruit bus and you're in this area.
  13. Seems correct. Surprise to me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_suspension#Soft_tail
  14. What I did once was give myself a goal - if I hit X weight and I felt I was being limited by the bike, then I'd upgrade. (Then again, a lady friend went to tri worlds and did many full Ironman events on her aluminium non-tri bike. She's upgraded since, but was pretty damned impressive on the old one!) Still bought cash though - just less stress that way.
  15. I know you said local (and I've just got my LBS to build a wheel for me) but you're under some pricing pressure there and I'd really look at http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ They have some wheel specials on at the mo. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/default.aspx?homePageID=1203 Sometimes it's great to support the LBS, but sometimes you can't afford to.
  16. Depends on whether the salespeople are running unnaturally quickly.
  17. So...your dad was the Michelle Ferrari of his hood?
  18. I wonder what the motivation is for a rec rider to take it? To beat their mates, I guess. Take off 15 min, feel like a hero. (Then know you didn't actually do it, cry sadly into your pillow.)
  19. For mostly random reasons I pretty much only have bibs now, but honestly miss shorts because they're just easier and lighter and less hot in summer. I've never felt my shorts slipping down. What the heck do you people do? Stop oiling your bum.
  20. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dFz10R529g Awesome combination of vocals and synth. Gareth Emery also has a free iTunes podcast that he updates regularly. I also get Simon Paterson's podcast, which is a bit more trance/techno/psy-trance, although not particularly hard stuff usually.
  21. Not an expert on the frames issue at all, but I've done a fair amount of reading on the China manufacturing issue. I think it is possible to get an item that is pretty much equivalent (if not exactly the same as) a branded product, because the manufacturing culture is so aimed at just copying. Sometimes items will come out of the same factory, especially once the product is a year or two old and they still have the resources to put out a few 100k extra items. Very hard to police that. Manufacturers will often give their industrial customers a great price to manufacture something that has a new design, specifically because they want to copy it. They don't have the design skills yet, so they value designs sourced from outside. However, the issue is that we can hardly tell which type of knockoff we're getting. Could be a weak frame that'll kill you on a dropoff. Even if it is a direct copy, we're essentially helping the Chinese steal from their customers. So, hard to know what is right. I can understand a young kid who just doesn't have the money and doesn't want to pay the intermediaries. For those who can afford it, nice to support the LBS and design team who own the IP. This book is great: http://www.amazon.com/Poorly-Made-China-Insiders-Production/dp/0470405589
  22. You missed the broom brush at the back
  23. Sounds perfect for someone whose hands keep falling off the bar-ends! Just don't send your bike to Johan. Because of the hate hate hate.
  24. 1) He fixes this problem by removing the brakes, thus making what's in front of the bike of uppermost importance. 2) When you have airplane lights in front of you, people behind you can see a very sharp silhouette. A rear light would only reduce this effect.
  25. Connect with the Cyclelab bunch, since they should know routes around there. Will also likely find riding partners for early morning as well.
