  1. Thanks. There are so many options. Smaller chainring with the 14 (for which there are also stock issues). Last resort is mtb crank with 36t on the current cluster. Discipline? From a racing snake that just wants to ride away from me? But yes, I could just restrict the limits on the derailleur for training purposes.
  2. We are looking for a 16t junior road rear cluster for Shimano freehub. My daughter wants to do the WP Road Cycling champs and have to get the geared rollout for u17 within the regulations. We have one on order but no guarantees it will be here in time (4 weeks), and would like her to train a bit with the lower gearing. Just maybe there is someone that has in the past supported a junior and still has one laying around. Thanks.
  3. Doable along the railway maintenance road. I have done it numerous times, extending N of Laingsburg as well. The Spoornet maintenance workers have never seemed bothered by us. There may be some locked gates, but the wires are totally messed (a bit like the Zim border). One snag though. If ridden at pace, be prepared for some bleeding shins and possibly some bike dents because the railway ballast stone is pretty sharp. At touring speeds, no problem. As an aside, I one day mentioned to my Dad that I had ridden up to Laingsburg, and he showed me my Grandads diary (Moms father), who had been postmaster in Maatjiesfontein during the Boer war, and he had to often go to Laingsburg by bike, which he did along the railway. Pretty sure that the bike was a lot heavier, no tubeless tyres and most likely single speed back then.
  4. Had/has to be from your place of residence.
  5. It was an attack on a single cyclist, preceded by an attack on the two gentleman in the Madimac tops. the video of the pedestrian crossing is not the incident, but where it is described what happened later on. The text in the FB also explains clearly what happened.
  6. Correct, and I did say between Strand and Gordons Bay, and it still is the R44 though. It is also ridden by the vast majority of people riding between GB and Rooi-Els, so warrants aheads-up.
  7. Beyond that gate is the Steenbras Dam, a short drive away. Used to be a popular picnic spot, lovely gardens and short walks. Fond family memories of visiting the dam, especially when it overflowed, more regularly in the 70's. Even had a tea room many years ago if I remember correctly. But, under management of the COCT who have done risk assessments for public access, and deem it wiser to just bar the public rather than risk the snowflakes injuring themselves and suing them. It would be a nice extension to the climb discussed in the last few posts up to the filtration plant, especially if we could follow the road all the way to the gate at the back of Sir Lowries Pass, which used to be a second access point. Used to be a tar road all the way.
  8. Super route. Passed you on my way back, although I only did a 32km to the top of the first hill after Steenbras. Today only saw 4 cyclists, yesterday was busy with a few groups out riding.

Thanks. I am aware of before. Hope not again and that he is ok. Some nice solid training rides the past few months.

    The Munga 2019

I see a farm house just short of 500. The person (dot) that I am following and urging on went past and then seemed to then go back and has since gone dof. I am hoping that it is just to get some shade and sleep. Is your bil BN?
  12. My favorite ride. Agree, earlier better. On the other hand, the busier it gets, the slower the traffic. I feel safer on the coastal road than the R44 to Stellenbosch with the high speeds that cars and trucks are travelling at. This high speed traffic quite often includes MTB'rs in a hurry to get to Jonkers. (It is Friday ) Back to the coastal route beyond GB. Boat trailers are sometimes a wake up call as they are both wider and not always expected. Two incidents though. The first a motorbike coming from the opposite direction and not making the turn, ended up in "our" lane. He just missed a the back end of a bakkie travelling same direction as me, then clipped the wall right in front of me. I had stopped dead and he just made it back out past me, happily carrying along on his way. The second was a "box" in an Audi R8 travelling same direction and definitely not travelling the posted 70km/h speed limit. It also clipped the wall about 50m ahead, leaving bits of plastic and carbon fiber in the road.
  13. What is the sand like on these routes? Latest FB details are different to above. Start Time: 90km: 08:00 58km: 08:30 48km: 08:45 35km: 09:00 25km: 09:05
  14. This thread has been enlightening. Not sure if this video has been linked yet, but after seeing this I am not sure whether we should be too concerned, rather than the motocross fans. https://www.pinkbike.com/news/video-the-fim-emtb-world-cup-race-in-imola-was-embarrassing.html
  15. Are you not maybe thinking of Thandi across the other side of the N2, parts of which may now be included in the Paul Cluver.trais.
  16. Looking at it again, I think that that dude (according to Mariske's FB post, Andrew McClean's partner) was already having his own little crash before Mariske came along. Possibly he realised that someone was approaching at speed, went offline, lost it and bang, two riders down. She definately never just rode into the back of him.
  17. 5 minutes would be fine if it were working. Some riders have warp speed the way the spots are all over the place (or the riders cannot navigate, right now all the top woman are way off course). Many that are not logging appear to have been beamed up to wherever. Scott(y)?
  18. The wind? Front people hitting the wall as they climbed onto the freeway and slowing instead of the front of the group accelerating away. Anyway, my conclusion I came up with after every time we hit a wall of wind and the speed dropped at the front. Those behind would be protected from the wind to an extent, but would have to brake.
  19. Event regulations that have become stricter (reality) and a different starting location from the previous wind enhancing location of the civic centre (reality) accounted for, all I see in the "fear of wind comments" are lentil munchers and NIMBY snowflakes with a desire to eliminate any risk from life. Just ride the bike. The wind is what it is on the day.
  20. So incredibly proud of my 11 year old daughter. This was her 4th (2 x 14km, 2 x 20km) with waking up Saturday saying she was going to go for the podium in the 20Km. She started batch A, 2nd row. I was mid group as we also said that it would be a trial run for the WP Marathon series where she would be on her own. I averaged about 200m behind her and could see that she was 2nd lady, with 3rd lady just in front of me. After a good pace to the first water point climb, I sensed her pace dropping off, as did the 3rd lady who then passed my daughter. She promptly stood up and got onto the back wheel of the lady now ahead, re-passing her in the water point turn. At that point I new it was game on for them 2. I never saw how the rest unfolded as just after the water point I assisted a 40km entrant with a mechanical. Lost about 10 minutes. Cruised to the end finishing 6 minutes behind my daughter. She made the podium, 2nd lady across the line in 1:08. Really, really happy for her. All those hard 26-30km rides, with me talking her through gears, line, tactics and pace seem to be paying off. This morning she says to me, marathon is over, now its cross-country, meaning next week at Rhebokskloof. Some of you may have seen her, as she said that most people passing her commented on her riding. https://www.jetlineactionphoto.com/directview.php?v=&e=10045&se=4128&r=26381
  21. Thanks. No, I don't have enough detail to create an event. I have contacted both WPMTB and CSA, and if I get a response, will post here, unless someone comes up with the details. It's my daughter that is riding, but logistically it's a nightmare as I will most likely be away for work.
  22. What am I missing? There does not seem to be much interest in round 2 destined for Rheebokskloof 16th March. 3 weeks before round 1 entries were done and dusted. For this round I do not see the event even mentioned on the CSA website. WP Cycling still shows on their website that the venue for 16/03/2019 is still to be confirmed, in spite of a FB post confirming Rheebokskloof as the venue, That post talks about entering. Fine, but could someone please suggest where we enter? Round 2 is also not listed as an event here on The Hub?
  23. I realise and understand that bike shops cannot keep stock of every item, and waiting for an ordered item is usually expected. What I look for though is firstly, how willing are they to source the item, and then secondly whether they contact me as promised. The latter usually determines whether I ever return or not. Based on that rule there are not many bike shops left that I can go too.
  24. Condolences to family and friends. This is happening two frequently. The "freeway" always comes up when an N or M road is mentioned, and probably does serve as a useful reminder. If I am correct, and I do say "if," this section of the M4 is not a freeway. I also seem to remember triangular warning signs (black bicycle silhouette on white background, red edging), warning motorists of cyclists, implying that this is not a freeway and cycling is allowed. I often ride non-freeway stretches of the N2 (in the Western and Southern Cape), and am surprised by the number of licensed drivers that try tell me bicycles are not allowed on an N road, not factoring in whether that section is marked a freeway or not.
