  1. Yes, we do. In some areas, close to still bodies of water and marshland. But, they're nowhere near as plentiful as in Scotland. Those things are on another level.
  2. Easily my least favourite insect. Closely followed by mozzies. The relentless, high-pitched whine. You know they're there, and then they fly close to your ears and yyou try to get em while you're in that place inbetween wakefulness and slumber. GAH!
  3. Bee, ticks & horse flies. Last ones are the worst 'cos they just hover and hover and I fkn hate them so much. At least ticks you can get off you. Hoogekraal & flies. Joh. No fanks.
  4. yeah, for rides where I'm just with mates I go slower, and try to "train" on the minimum IE water. Works for most, but with Enduro I invariably go harder to ensure I'm not last to drop in to the stages. Need help for those extra efforts, so that I don't get to the top feeling like a pap snoek.
  5. Problem is, the ProFrame isn't made for wide heads. I'm a 62 and the lid just would not fit. Leatt was fine, the Giro was LOVELY (just felt perfect) but local availability was limited at the time and I didn't want to end up paying 5k for a lid, so went with the Leatt. can't comment on the Bell 2r / 3r / DH as I haven't tried them, but helmets are extremely fit-dependent, and head shapes vary wildly.
  6. You need to allow multiple selections, Howard...
  7. THIS. I felt a HUUUGE difference mid-race on the Conters enduro when I started taking on a carbo drink instead of just water and protein. Used the same strategy at Hoogies enduro and I felt stronger than I had in ages, even so far as to have Savage comment on it Carb drink, energy bars (used to use PVM back in the day but I find em too chewy and mouth-drying) and jelly babies, together with some billies. That's gonna be my strategy. Wondering whether to take my pack for the day. It can take 3l instead of the 1.5 I have on the bike and bum bag... BUT, it's heavy and I'm not as used to it anymore. Plus, a bare back is far nicer. Decisions.
  8. And the travel adjust marks on the right leg also do.
  9. Nope. Lid on at all times. If you're ridin, you're wearin.
  10. Ja but this one has suspension. Seen it in action and it's excellent.
  11. http://m.quickmeme.com/img/c5/c5e065ca27fe1612b25cbffdca416f853b8016092178d910770f63c1e3ffda0a.jpg
  12. Yeah, naaaah. JW needs no redemption, and our perception of your attitude is yet again confirmed via that braggatory post.
  13. Real time footage of Jewie as a result of the last 4 pages...
  14. literal picture of Jewie just moments after hearing that....
  15. Ja, indeed. I watched BKXC's vlog of the days' racing. Looks juuuust up my street, but I'd probably do the BC Bike Ride, not the Race. Helps that I've heard all about it from Muishond.
  16. Before you ask, though, NO. I haven't done The Epic. And I probably never will. I don't see the attraction, and especially not at the price it's going for.
  17. Well, @nevermore - if you read properly yourself, you'd see that G has used the word "largely" to qualify his statement. Yes, there are some pro's there, but the Epic HAS largely become a marketing platform & popularity contest. It's still a race, and a good one at that with a few pro's at the pointy end, but it's not nearly the "best of the best". In your opinion, though, it is. And that's fine. But don't carry on your attempt at lambasting others because they don't rate it as highly as you want them to. So. You rode the Epic. Good for you. You got to ride the same course as Nino and Jenny did. Yay. You're proud of that, we get it. Some people just don't CARE about that, though. And sorry, I'd far rather do BCBR, or Trans Provence, or the Swiss Epic, or a 4 month Euro bikepacking trip, than the Epic.
  18. The choice of words in this post just perfectly illustrates that EPIC mentality you're shouldering.
  19. but in answer to the OP - on a one-or-the-other basis, with Epic on teh one hand and a 4 month Euro tour on the other, there's one that would win hands down. And it's not the one that gives you a kiff sticker with a -1 or -2 at the end. Euro tour without a shadow of a doubt.
  20. At least the climbs are pretty.... And 100% agreed. New tyre day for the back. Mary is okay, but DHR I reckon will roll a bit better. And it's new. And matchy matchy maxxis etc.
