  1. Hey Andre. I guess the question is how long is a piece of string? A white elephant can be delivered right to your doorstep if you wave the right amount of cash around mate!! Budget plays the biggest role in any bike buying exercise and usually what you like and what you can afford are at 2 opposite ends of the spectrum. Lighter frames, rims and parts are more expensive, and more often than not less durable. With the newer type frames, its a preference thing between carbon, titanium and aluminium, or a mix of them. These materials offer a different degree of rigidity and durability, and also have weight limits, for example, if you are a 130kg ex rugby prop, steer clear of carbon and titanium. You can also get compact, semi compact and standard frame sizes. Speak to your LBS to have you measured up for the right size. There is also personal preference with the groupset you choose. Shimano's Dura Ace is the flagship and can be compared to Campy Record or Chorus (yes most guys say Chorus because Record is in a class of its own bla bla). Campy has been complimented on a better look and feel (carbon finishes and italian style), Shimano has been said to work better with less hassles, again its a preference thing. You mention Sora in your post, try and go for a 10 speed, Shimano's 105 or the campy equivilent, probably Mirage is mid range. Sram also provide road groupsets and their flagship RED is world class, do some homework though. Rims are important and a good set will set you back a bit of cash. I have ridden both the brands you mention and had no issues (bar a broken spoke on a set of Shimano's). Eastons are good and are somewhat better priced on the rands to weight ratio. The best you can do is go to a few bike shops and speak to the guys on the floor and listen to what they have to say. Most times they will contradict each other because like I mentioned above its mostly preferential. For every rumour you hear about a particular model or make of frame, chain, or stem snapping, there's a thousand raves for the same product range because the guy you speak to rides it. Hope this helps you
  2. Aah, so that's what that little A on each of the sprockets is for then. Thanks for the info guys, I saw that mine all have the A type so yesterday I decided to give it a go and slapped the new config together. Obviously I had no idea what the A meant then but it seemed to work ok on my ride.
  3. Anybody ??
  4. Sorry to hear you had to graft. Yip I did it, was ok, there was more than one group though, I musta caught the back group as I was a few minutes late. We had Obie and the motorbike again, but they didnt push to much initially. Also, the top guys didn't go ape **** on pomona hill either, they took it quite easy for a change. There was a bit of speed as we came around to Great north, and a few guys broke away there, I stayed in the chasing bunch being the lazy prat that I am. We averaged 36km/h so it wasn't a bad effort, but our bunch was a bit more relaxed than the spleen bursting, lung exploding, ear bleeding pace I've grown accustomed to.dougaroony2008-12-07 03:12:52
  5. Does anyone know the biggest number in sprocket teeth one can jump regarding gear ratios? Currently on any shimano or campy cassette that I have seen, the biggest jump from 1 sprocket to another is 2 teeth. For example in an 11-25 ten speed Campy cassette, you would get the following sprockets: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23. The 11 sprocket to the 16 are individual sprockets divided by spacers (except for the 11 and 12), and the 17 / 19 and 21 / 23 are riveted together. If say the 17 / 19 started slipping, could one swap it out with say a 17 / 18 instead? This would obviously make the jump from the 21 sprocket to the 18 sprocket 3 teeth instead of the standard 2 teeth. My concern here is damaging the cassette, chain and or rear dr.
  6. Big up BS ... As for you TurtleK, did you do Pomona this am? Oh and good luck for next time
  7. I ride the 303's and love em to bits. They are super light and stiff. The 202's are awesome too as are all the rims in the Zipp range, but I cant comment on how they ride as I haven't tried a set yet. I was told that the 202's are more a climbing rim though.
  8. 2 fingers and an analog wrist watch, how much more basic do you need?
  9. The problem with most insurance companies (Mutual and Federal, Outsurance, Samtam etc) is that they will insure your bike EXCEPT on race day. I dont know about you but for me that simply isn't good enough. I went to Cyclesure, my bikes are still covered on raceday with them.
  10. I have a Garneau Sonix 6.4 Frame = 1090g Fork = 320g Not the lightest, but stiff as a board and soooo damned responsive. Best frame I've ever owned (to date)
  11. Thanks very much . Lotsa rainy day money went into it.

  18. Got a mate who just moved to Oz a few months back. He got attacked by a magpie whilst out riding. Apparently the birds go for cyclists, nobody knows why though. I thought it might have something to do with him being a damn Man U supporter, Newcastle dont seem to have a good track record on the football field at the moment. Anyway, its a theory, use it, dont use it!!
  19. looks like that , musta been my drool (or the camera angle)
  20. the Zipps are 303 - Z3's. Ex tubbies, skewers and cassette they weigh in at a whopping 960g for the set. Thanksdougaroony2008-11-14 12:53:29

  23. Tuesday to Friday - Meet at 05:00 for 05:10 at the BP garage on North Rand road (across from tour de Frans). Tuesday is race pace but Wednesday to Friday is easy Saturday - Benoni world champs aka Pomona classic. Meet the bunch at about 06:30 on North Rand rd travelling east towards Northmead. The bunch flies past the same BP garage mentioned above so hang out until you see them if you like. This is a race pace ride Sunday - various group rides starting at about 06:00 from Tour de Frans and Sweat n Gears.
