Haha so if you’re just going for the enjoyment factor of just riding the pass, I would suggest the MTB. First time I did the pass I was on my gravel & I didn’t have the right gears and it was a struuuugle. Like when it dropped to 9-11% I got excited, it felt like it was flat 😂 and the downhill is a journey on a gravel. It’s rough!!! For the actual race, gravel… but for enjoyment of just the pass, MTB!

No, i can differentiate between a company’s frustrating business model, and a genuinely decent guy trying to do what he can for customers who were let down by it… so in these cases I may be disappointed with BA service, but doesn’t mean the guy working behind the screen on the other side has to fall into the same category…

While from a customer perspective the ordering system is often not ideal, i have to give credit to Wayne as well, he has always been incredibly helpful over the many years I have successfully (and often unsuccessfully…) dealt with the BA order process.

Hey Chris Thanks so much for the info, and the offer, much appreciated! I definitely think I’ll go with the 24” for now, he isn’t the most confident little guy at the best of times, so would rather make sure he is as comfortable as possible…

Hey! Sorry to drag up an old thread, just a quick question on this as I’m also looking at bikes for 8yo. The 249r - is this not just a 24” frame with 26” wheels? So would have thought frame size would be same as standard 24” just with more tyre clearance? Or am I mistaken, is the 24” frame longer to account for the larger wheels?

Haha yeah I think that’s just their business model, all I can say is that as annoying as it is, it must work, because they consistently continue to do it when people post bikes for sale. Guess there are people out there who maybe need cash urgently, and at least then they have a reliable trustworthy buyer! If you’re not interested just ignore and move on. Or just a simple ‘no thanks’ would never hurt 😛 You might have just been unlucky with your first experience, mostly bikehub is not like that at all (in my experience anyways).

Unless those hope hubs are worth like 12-15k…

And when I say “a bit”, I mean a lot. I think they could have done better. That’s not really representative of true gravel racing. I do however think the outcome of the winner in the womens race probably would have been the same either way 😂 pfp is on fire, very well deserved.

Haha, I must say I was personally a bit underwhelmed. No argument that it would be fun as like an urban gravel route on a weekend ride. But for me gravel is actual gravel roads requiring tires wider than 30c, corrugations, long distances and stupid ascent. But each to their own…

Thanks @ChrisF and @NotSoBigBen Yeah I’m on coastal saver, zero MSA left (I mean, it is DH and it is October, so as expected…) Look I did a proper job, broke my jaw so had to have surgery etc. But ironically looks like if my teeth had been rubbish and been knocked out entirely Discovery would have happily paid for the replacement. Which to me is a bit mind boggling tbh. i do also have gap cover but as it’s out of hospital I don’t think they’d cover, but will check. unreal. Like I do understand normal dental procedures they might not want to cover, but like as a direct result of a trauma/crash… seems a bit like a cop out considering how much we pay them monthly. Question for the discovery health experts (broker has been useless…): I know dentistry is not covered by Medical Aid, however has anyone had experience in respect of trauma and whether they will then cover the cost? Eg… falling off your bike face first, smashing yourself up quite well, and one of the issues turns out to be a tooth which now has a severed nerve, and requires a root canal in order to save it (well, “save”, ie not get an implant instead). Was looking at the website and it only seems to make reference to basic dental trauma treatment being covered in hospital/day clinic, but not at dentists rooms. So does this mean they won’t cover it even though it was a direct result of facial trauma? thanks in advance 🙏

Fair, can’t argue with the logic here. Was more aimed at the original comment(s) from Stringbean in this case, just thought they were a bit harsh. But again, personal opinion 😝

My point was more that I don’t think it’s fair to say she is an “utter embarrassment” and “not fit to represent at worlds”. I would also expect that a lot of advancing in international racing is also helped by experience, which you only get by attending. But, that is also just my personal opinion.

Pretty sure Hayley Preen was in there for at least 100km… got dropped because she got caught up behind a crash in the feed zone on a climb. Hayley is super strong, has been getting some experience racing over in Europe and the UK this season.

Yeah I’m hoping maybe there are some that I just didn’t spot 😂 only non-standard things I could see were the gold top cap and front hub seems purple? Other than that groupset etc looked stock. the sales guy certainly didn’t draw my attention to anything though when I was questioning him about the price point…
