And when I say “a bit”, I mean a lot. I think they could have done better. That’s not really representative of true gravel racing. I do however think the outcome of the winner in the womens race probably would have been the same either way 😂 pfp is on fire, very well deserved.

Haha, I must say I was personally a bit underwhelmed. No argument that it would be fun as like an urban gravel route on a weekend ride. But for me gravel is actual gravel roads requiring tires wider than 30c, corrugations, long distances and stupid ascent. But each to their own…

Thanks @ChrisF and @NotSoBigBen Yeah I’m on coastal saver, zero MSA left (I mean, it is DH and it is October, so as expected…) Look I did a proper job, broke my jaw so had to have surgery etc. But ironically looks like if my teeth had been rubbish and been knocked out entirely Discovery would have happily paid for the replacement. Which to me is a bit mind boggling tbh. i do also have gap cover but as it’s out of hospital I don’t think they’d cover, but will check. unreal. Like I do understand normal dental procedures they might not want to cover, but like as a direct result of a trauma/crash… seems a bit like a cop out considering how much we pay them monthly. Question for the discovery health experts (broker has been useless…): I know dentistry is not covered by Medical Aid, however has anyone had experience in respect of trauma and whether they will then cover the cost? Eg… falling off your bike face first, smashing yourself up quite well, and one of the issues turns out to be a tooth which now has a severed nerve, and requires a root canal in order to save it (well, “save”, ie not get an implant instead). Was looking at the website and it only seems to make reference to basic dental trauma treatment being covered in hospital/day clinic, but not at dentists rooms. So does this mean they won’t cover it even though it was a direct result of facial trauma? thanks in advance 🙏

Fair, can’t argue with the logic here. Was more aimed at the original comment(s) from Stringbean in this case, just thought they were a bit harsh. But again, personal opinion 😝

My point was more that I don’t think it’s fair to say she is an “utter embarrassment” and “not fit to represent at worlds”. I would also expect that a lot of advancing in international racing is also helped by experience, which you only get by attending. But, that is also just my personal opinion.

Pretty sure Hayley Preen was in there for at least 100km… got dropped because she got caught up behind a crash in the feed zone on a climb. Hayley is super strong, has been getting some experience racing over in Europe and the UK this season.

Irrespective of original price, for what you are getting there, that is not good value for money. Far better demo/used bikes for R40k. I’ve seen better for R20-25k… I am aware things are a bit crazy expensive in todays market due to stock shortages, demand > supply etc etc, but if someone told you a 10 speed aluminium bike was 55k you’d go along with that? for reference, cannondale website: https://www.cannondale.com/en-za/bikes/road/gravel/topstone-alloy/topstone-2

So, this morning I was in a well known bike shop in CPT grabbing some bar tape, and up for sale they had a Demo Cannondale Topstone 2. So: Aluminium bike, 10 speed GRX (but with an FSA crank), and Demo model so lightly used. R40,000. HOW EVEN. The poor sales guy thought I was interested. He did try tell me that it retailed at “R55k new” and was “reserved for a customer”. Shame. Hope he is just making that up or someone’s getting properly shafted 😂

I think Rossouw Bekker (also from Valley Electrical Titan Racing) also hooked a spot for Gravel Worlds at the same race

Seems reasonable. I’m sure a lot of riders are also ok with riding down the nek (as most of the time we are at the very least as fast as cars so can take the lane), so would venture a guess that there is likely to be more traffic up the trail than down it. My concern is definitely biased towards riding up the nek 👌
