So I was driving on coast road this morning at around 7:50am and a taxi tried to overtake me on that EXACT corner. I could see in my rear view mirror how he was overtaking other cars dangerously before he arrived behind me. There were still 2 cars in front of me, traveling at 60, cyclist coming towards us in the yellow lane on the other side of the road. Solid line due to the corner. The bro was going nowhere. But still, you best believe he literally just drove next to me in the wrong lane for ages before having to slam on brakes and go behind again because there was a mycity bus coming towards us. It hasn’t even been a week. This isn’t changing without major intervention, and it just really makes me so sad. I used to see that as one of the safer roads to ride on because of the shoulder… now I’m just like if that’s not even safe… I had a really bad crash due to an uber doing a u-turn into me on chappies 4 months ago, broke multiple bones in my face, 2 operations, plastic surgery and over a week in high care. I will admit I’m really starting to struggle with justifying the risks of getting out on our roads lately 😢

Like many of us I cycle this road a lot. Just this week within the space of 20min cycling from Hout bay to camps bay, I witnessed a taxi undertaking a car coming down suikerbossie, then a few min later another blew through the red traffic light going about 90kmh at llandudno, and then I saw at least 2-3 others driving at around 100kmh overtaking into oncoming traffic, cutting corners etc 😭 it was honestly only a matter of time. And on the same ride I rode up to tafelberg road which is where all the cops were hanging out ticketing cars (I assume licence discs). While I’m not excusing driving with expired license disc displayed on your car, given the apparent shortage of staffing, and known reckless behaviour on our roads (which I had just witnessed), it made me extremely disappointed that these resources weren’t being put to far better use with visible policing on the coast road. It is well known that taxis drive recklessly on this road (they were even banned a few years ago for a while).

Or what I did was buy a 2nd hand lightly used sram 12 speed NX cassette which also fits on a shimano HG hub

I meant more about the “deal” that was struck - I couldn’t see anything mentioned about cycling specifically when i searched online, only some doom and gloom articles from back in Feb 😂 but yeah, at least Paris nice is a good start…

I wouldn’t classify someone who buys bikes to get certain parts they otherwise might not be able to obtain to be used in PERSONAL bike builds, and then sell on what they don’t need as a “dealer” if you ask me… but I’m no lawyer…

If a seller doesnt like/agree with the terms of the platform, there are other available options (eg marketplace) to use instead…

I was not there, so cannot say what exactly happened. But looking at the photos and having ridden past where it happened on Saturday - I highly doubt they were going extremely fast. The road levels out there into an almost false flat (1/2%) which would likely have tempered their speed a bit (wasn’t on a steep descent section). Don’t think there was much wind that day, but what there was would likely have been a slight NW (headwind). Looking at where it happened, there should have been at least 100m of sight for the bus before turning. The damage was the RHS of the bus windscreen indicating it had possibly just started turning in. I’m sure there are fancy algorithms and plenty of witnesses to piece it together at some point. However none of this changes the outcome either way 😥 sh*tty week all around.

Anyone know what the conditions of the roads are like along the route at the moment?

You just type/paste the number in where it says “search name or number“ and if the person has WhatsApp it will pop up and allow you to chat 👌 I use it often on iPhone (that being said, I personally do prefer to use bikehub/marketplace message rather than give out my phone number all over the place)

I ride and drive that road all the time. At some point in the last few years they actually banned taxis from the route, between llandudno and camps bay, as there are myciti busses, and the taxis were incredibly reckless. But of course, there were protests and burning of busses and here we are back again… on my way to work the other day I watched a taxi not only overtake on blind corners, but also repeatedly UNDERTAKE cars on blind corners, in the yellow lane, 3 cars at a time. No words.

Done as best I can, thanks for the suggestion! Although they should probably be watching it first when they get home before clicking on a forum about it 😝 but we all know how enticing the hub can be…

Also, just FYI not sure if it is self evident or needs to be pointed out, but that motorbike was picked up from wherever it was on the road after the accident and placed upright against the wall as can be seen in the photo, which was clearly taken some time after the accident took place. But yeah, let’s maybe wait for the facts to reveal. There are also plenty of camera’s along that road that should maybe provide a bit of additional insight.

Yeah it’s very different to the story I got, from a driver (who is not a cyclist) who the bikes overtook on a blind corner mere seconds before at a ridiculous speed. The driver also indicated that there were tyre marks on the wrong side of the road where the motor bike had started skidding. But yeah, I was not there so I guess all conjecture at this point. Hopefully forensics will be able to confirm.
