  1. My only small gripe was that nasty steel H beam right in the middle of the section next to the railway line. Had a little red tape wound around it but when following someone close who suddenly dodges - too late, came to a sudden stop and hit the ground really hard. Luckily only 2 km from the end so I got back on adrenalin and limped home and the rest of the weekend.
  2. Better than my 5h04 - might have been the break rubbing
  3. Are you allowed to at least drink fluids under "special considerations" and just eat before sunrise? My diaibetic colleages drink water during the day.
  4. Thanks - 60 it is
  5. Does anyone know the altitude of climb on the 60 and 40 distances for "Die Burger"? Or can someone give thier opinion on the comparison of say the 66 at Tulbach to the Burger 60km so I can decide which route to choose. Found the 66 very tiring at Tulbach but also found my front disk was rubbing heavily - must have got a knock on the route.
  6. Thanks oaks. Weird how the shape of the teeth are so differently worn. do you guys think there is a poor setting or just to many winter races through heavy mud. MTB has only clocked 1400km's
  7. Hi Guys Anyone know if the split shown in pic below is normal in one of the De-railer Wheels? Also I cannot see from the picture on SRAM webpage - which wheel is top and which bottom. I am having a few issues with my de-railer and thought maybe the split in the wheel might be an issue or I have mixed up which wheel goes where during past cleaning exercises. If anyone has this model, could you have a quick look and let me know. 8. I kind of like a medal to hang in my workshop at home. I Have medals and badges from 1990 when I started riding road events on my first MTB and is a nice reminder for myself as I get older. I don't mind the R10 or more on the cost of the race and also wouldn't mind if they added another 10 for charity. Just my humble opinion.
  9. So will you be strong enough on the hip yet to fight for a bucket for yourself
  10. I was also a bit upset not getting a medal for trying the big distance. Took me long enough but it's always nice to come home with something to show the wife that I didn't just go out for a beer with the mates. Although the amount of mud I brought back was also pretty good proof of a tough ride. Bloody chain was screetching the last 20 km and the derailer kept jamming on the steep climbs forcing me to push. Would be fair/nice if you could send those a medal that never got.
  11. 1500m the 1000m climbs at Greyton near killed me - looks like I'll have to downgrade till a little fitter
  12. completely off the topic....but - I saw a guy do a couple somersaults in the steep forest decent and it looked like he was welded to his bike. I also never got used to my cleat pedals when I upgraded my bike and have, since breaking the head of my Femur off, changed back to strap type pedals of the old days and feel much more comfortable even though I look out of place at the races. I feel that I can still exit my pedals quick enough to jump the handle bars should the front dig in and buck me off. With cleat pedals I cannot imagine how the brain can function quick enough to twist and escape the bike at the same time even if they are very loosely set. Would love to hear if anyone else finds the old system safer.
  13. anyone know who was doing the photography?
  14. wonder what happened to the bloke in front of me that looked like he broke a collarbone a few km's after half way on the 42. Looked in a fair bit of pain but he told the fist of us that stopped to carry on, his girlfriend was on the phone to race control.
  15. anyone know from past rides if the Robertson is tougher than the Greyton route? Just wanted a guide as to how to pace myself. Did an embarrassing 3h20 on the Robertson 42km on Sat. which was the same time as I did for the 55 in DeDoorens
  16. Ya - go to www.myguides.co.za
  17. I heard from someone that the hills were really tough on the 55 so I held back until the last 15km when I realised that it looked all downhill from there. Did an embarrassing 3h20 ish but plenty fuel still in the tank. Was a very scenic ride
  18. Thanks - will give it a try and just start real slow
  19. I am planning to try this race - the first since getting my hip pinned together with Titanium - have been doing some training but the one leg is not yet fully back to full muscle tone. Do you guys think the 55 is doable for the not 100% fit or better to start on the lesser of two evils.? I have been doing up to 35 km's road/mountain with no problems, but I figure this one might be a bit tough.
  20. Just remeber that the painkillers also have anti-inflamitory included in them so you may need them at least for a week or two after the Op.
  21. When I broke the same bone in Jan 2011 my surgeon also said I could never run again or MTB - only road cycling. I have been on my MTB since June 2011 and getting stronger each day. The muscles weaken on the broken side and your opposite leg will get stronger to compensate - but now the right leg is catching up again. I was yesterday given orthotics to compensate for leg length difference and I hiked up to the blockhouse yesterday evening with my daughter and it went so well I feel like a new person. There is hope at the end of the tunnel mate.
  22. What a cool route to wek
  23. The hill I was referring is much further up from the sign - just below first beakon before block house
  24. Cool, thanks. Heart rate is going up and times to block house also going up Getting older is a btch. I remeber doing dead man's hill (or whatever the official name is) on a cignal ozark which I bought in 1989 in 3rd gear. Now I'm down to first and the Merida bike is much lighter.
