  1. Got a mail back from city council that they are investigating a claim for compensation for injury and would come back within three months. Hope the finger is better by then
  2. Don't have the time or energy for Lawyers, was hoping to get at least a response from the city but all I got was a read receipt for my mail. Am going to make a few phone calls now so it hopefully won't be ignored like my e-mail. Edit: By the way - it was not a road closure, just barrels along the side of the Main M12 road - but your marking out point is valid IMHO
  3. Looked at those but the steerers were all too short
  4. I need to replace a set of RockShox that had a high speed accident but I don't want to spend too much as it is soon time to upgrade my MTB. I drove around to a few bike shops but most say 26" is rare to find nowadays and the classifieds also brought up nothing much. Those shops that did carry shox for 26" were upwards of R2,500 Because I have the large frame my steerer tube is 220 mm and only Bridge cycles had an old looking SR Suntour shock for R850 that looked suitable. Should I just get the Suntour or any other places to look in Cape Town Area?
  5. I hope the city have fixed the problem by the time you get home
  6. Isn't the hole in the road further down as you get into Camps Bay?
  7. I did find an e-mail address on the City's website and sent them a mail to try and mark the hazard better or put something softer - the fact that a few other guys had a fright means we are not all in the wrong. A slight dipping of your head can take these out of site, but if there were a few smaller markers such as road cones first gradually coming from the barrier towards the hazard which I am sure should be normal practice I would have seen it. I do admit in hindsight I should have been looking, but spending most of my time in the mountains I just assumed wrongly that the roads were safer and took my eye off the ball - amazing how quick things can go wrong. Thanks to all who called me stupid - what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
  8. I was wondering what is a reasonable warning before road maintenance barriers so cyclists are aware well ahead of said barriers. I guess a lot of incidents with above barriers happen when cyclists look down and don't notice that roadworks are coming ahead. On Sunday I put an end to my Burger entry just above Lundudno. Coming from Hout Bay over the neck I was a little worn from Suikerbossie at a good pace and my head was hanging a little more than usual which happens when recovering. Was barreling down the first bend at 45 km/h and suddenly went flying over a 200 liter drum placed just inside the yellow line. Resulted in badly dislocated finger, buckled shocks on the MTB and many roasties. I never saw any warning signs prior to these steel drums placed in the road so randomly. Tempted to get a response from whoever put these damn things in the road without, in my opinion, proper safe warning. Anyway, two months recovery and a long road of phisio ahead - rant over.
  9. Update - X - Rays showed that all is OK with my repair. Good news. Strange thing I noticed however was that the top of the titanium pin which protrudes out the top of the femur has partially been covered by bone growth but the edges are to my eye very jagged. Unfortunately I missed the Ortho's call and just went by his voice-mail that all is OK, but I will have to get back to him and question why the pain and lame muscles have suddenly returned. Anyway, at least the head is still good and no joint issues either - Burger up next - way unfit though
  10. Yep, started my cycling with no shox back then - bike weighed a ton and the 1st gear was like 5'th gear now. Actually crashed on my first ride down on one of those corners on that nice black ash/gravel
  11. That bypass route has been there forever and a day if my memory is correct as I first rode that in 1989 when coming down that way. I never used to go past the Forestry houses as I thought that was not allowed back then. Think I am correct but I have been doing that bypass forever
  12. Enjoyed Jonkershoek this am along with half of Stellenbosch http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee420/Landy1973/Stellenbosch-20131109-00002_zpsf15c8746.jpg
  13. My wife who works in theatre was telling me that she is witnessing a lot of guys getting a certain type of hip repair being replaced because the metal is making shavings which then cause septicaemia - all done for free (or Guarantee) This is the snap she took when I was butchered - notice the size of the tool being used and the "Splash curtain" - glad I was fast asleep. http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee420/Landy1973/theatre_zpsa30ff51f.jpg
  14. Funny thing is that when I had the repair - my Surgeon said no more MTB and never be able to run. Last night I decided to try going for a run for the first time in 3 years and managed 29 minutes for 5 km. Hip was sore and stiff after, but this am feels a bit better. Think I will go for the X-ray just to make sure. Just to find time to get off graft and do it
  15. Shot - that's brilliant news - how old are you and your mate if I may ask? How did he damage a new hip and how was it repaired?
  16. I have a nasty feeling from some symptoms I am having 3 years after my op that I may need to go and do a full hip replacement. I wanted to know if anyone out there has one that can withstand the rigours of mountain biking with a full titanium hip? At the time I broke the head off my femur the doc said I was too young for hip replacement as the life span was generally 15 years so they just pinned it back on. There was however the possibility that up to two years after, the blood supply to the head of the bone could have been damaged and would result in the bone dying off - looks like it could have been 3 instead of 2 years - not sure yet. Before I go and get X-rays to confirm - I would like to know if the outcome is good or bad with a complete new hip - if not, I would rather not know and just continue through the pain.
  17. In the ship repair business - we call grease nipples "ornaments" and their lack of use keeps us in business Go idea though - might do the same as a drill and tap and nipple would save time fiddling with those small little ball bearings every winter
  18. was 1/8 inch - lucky I did the job as the inner bearings were dry as a bone and bit rusted
  19. They are pitted from too much water crossings this winter
  20. I have the old fashioned standard flat pedals and need to change the balls in the bearing. Anyone know the diameter of the balls - I need to buy before stripping as I am at work and will fetch on route home from bearing supplier.
  21. Last time I cycled that event it was called the "Natal Mercury" and we got a free shirt with far better design - still have it 17 years later (wife never managed to toss it yet)
  22. Sold to me as a "pure" jack Russell - bastards Anyway - he at least has the temperament and is a real live wire
  23. My little "Buster" supporting my son and I at the races http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee420/Landy1973/EvaandBuster_zps2a0837b2.jpg http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee420/Landy1973/2013-10-27111005_zps873259bf.jpg
  24. Man that max heart rate is high - I get scared at that figure - Hope you are fairly young
  25. I find Endo figures to be less than my Cycle computer and the race organisers by about 2 km on an average 45 km race. Might just be the blackberry GPS is not 100% good - my wife's S4 when we walk together looses signal and also zig zags the tracks all over the show - might be more a phone related issue than the app itself.
