  1. Looks like Windmills is on the Currys Post road so shouldn't be more than 30kms away if you take Curry Post (but there will be a portion of dirt road). On the N3 probably about 40km.
  2. As Ryan has said the trail is closed as per the request of SAPPI. No point upsetting landowners to ride a trail that isn't going anywhere. Save it for another trip. To the OP, I'd suggest the Karkloof 30km loop. It starts and ends at the club (so coffee, food, showers & indemnities all available here), the route is well sign posted and is just good riding with some great scenery along the way. The Outback trails are awesome but will it be a tough'ish day out and the trails are a touch more technical than those closer the club.
  3. He must have been super efficient. Also shows that being fast has everything to do with maximum exit speed, making the most of the terrain and not just going fast in straight lines. Brilliant effort on his part. For those who think that pumping the terrain to gain speed is effortless, i would suggest a pumptrack session of 3 or 4 minutes... This would give you a very basic idea. It is flippen hard work.
  4. Mannon's run. She was flippen pinned http://youtu.be/5nnqQ_neZjM
  5. Finally... Another venue at St Ives just outside Howick has recently opened. I haven't ridden here but i hear it is quite good, but quite tech. Details at www.stives.co.za
  6. Most of the info you're looking for can be found at karkloofmtbtrails.co.za Also the Howick trails are excellent. Permits can be obtained from the medi-clinic in town. Details are available at www.howickmountainbiking.co.za
  7. And the odd drop can still be quite tricky
  8. Sometimes 10 inches just isn't enough!
  9. Rattys race run. He was on a flyer!!! http://youtu.be/XBDpu4-pQhM Ratboy "I didn't want to brake for that jump." GM "I noticed" RB "Did you brake for that jump?" GM "Nah I had a puncture." RB "Ahhh w@nk." Well at least he still had his sense of humour. I think it'll be a long road to recovery though. Hope he is back up to speed for next season.
  10. Here is a little something KathF & I (mostly KF's work) put together. After spending a week in bed with flu that cost 108Euro (don't go to the doctor on the weekend, lesson learnt) Kath finally got well enough to ride. It was a bloody good couple of days. http://youtu.be/MFLFEyezHC0 Believe it or not we did ride with our other mates but never had too much footage. I'm sure Peach will throw something together though
  11. http://www.tissottiming.com/Sport?sport=CY Looks like James Reid currently in 8th...
  12. Candice Neethling 32nd in Womans U23 XCO Frances du Toit 26th in Womans Juniors, Bianca Haw DNF http://www.pinkbike.com/news/results-2014-world-championships-norway-xco.html
  13. Juniors DH qualifying done. The two Saffa's Andrew Martin & Gregg Brown have qualified in 50th & 28th respectively. Good luck for the race fellas
  14. Depends on the brand and the agreement they have with their distributors AFAIK.
  15. At least your ego doesn't need any greasing.
  16. I've yet to see anything to back up the claims made by the others. I even tried to Google "don't regrease bearings" and got nothing. Anyways each to there own I guess. I guess all the contributors have their own minds made up, so it'll be up to those reading the thread to make their own mind up.
  17. How are cup & cone bearings under 'pressure'? If you are applying enough preload to apply pressure to the bearings I'm afraid you're going to cause those bearings, along with the cup & cone to wear prematurely. The cone should not apply any pressure to the bearings. It should simply be advanced far enough that there is no play between the bearings & the cone. What's the feeling on the CK bearings that are also low speed bearings? Since they fall into the same boat as the normal bicycle sealed bearings which don't spin fast enough to generate 'pressure'? Should be serviced? Don't touch them ever?
  18. I don't believe anyone has stated that regreasing a worn or pitted bearing is going to 'fix' the bearing or extend its life. It would need to be replaced. I think we ALL agree on this. I think the point people are trying to make is that a bearing that is still good (i.e. not worn and not pitted), but has the old grease (which will have some dirt in it) cleaned out and replaced with clean grease will last longer than if the cleaning/regreasing exercise was not carried out.
  19. What you have said here is impossible Patches! 1. you have suggested that you Avids did not give you trouble and actually managed to slow you down. Please consider Shimano brakes, they are infallible. 2. You claim you got extra life out of a bearing by cleaning and repacking with grease - Get real bro!
  20. I've never said that they are. In fact I agreed with you that the CK bearings are of superior quality, but they are still just bearings at the end of the day. In the same vein though you cannot honestly say that cleaning and regreasing a bearing (that isn't already smoked) isn't going to get it to run better and delay its ultimate failure by some time, whether it be CK, skf, Enduro or some Chinese cheapy.
  21. While I probably am, my post(s) are just there to show (others) that one of the industry leaders suggests that regreasing bearings will prolong their life.
  22. Check out the CK website... While i agree that the bearings may be of higher quality the process and the description of regreasing the CK bearings is identical to what Skylark described. The only difference is the CK bearings have a steel outer with the rubber seal attached to this, which still needs to be lifted off with a pick or similar. While the CK BB had a regreasing tool there is also a description should you not have the tool. CK seem think that regreasing bearings prolong their life...
  23. What's the feeling then with Chris King bearings (headset & BB in particular) where regreasing of the sealed bearings forms part of normal maintenance (as per the CK manual)?
  24. Evans bike was thrashed after hitting all that big stuff. The rocker was almost cracked through, but he was still riding. Touch wood, not too much wrong with both mine & Kath's bikes. I've done the forks already (lowers service) & possibly the Giants bb needs to be replaced (it did have a full season on it already) but that is pretty much it.
  25. That is Andrew "Ginger Snap" Martin. The blonde kid in the Jeep kit is 'Special' Gregg Brown Edit: Damn you Nigel Hicks. Forever just beating me!
