  1. So we took a hike up to the second waterfall in Jonkershoek early this morning. At the pool at the bottom of the last little fall we found... Or more closely (sorry about quality of phone camera images) ...maybe it came from up there...
  3. Lovely bike. Just got to love the nice clean lines on these old bikes. Here is a couple of my early 60's Cinelli...
  4. Maybe you should check some facts before posting drivel like this...like the R 1.5 million the PPA has spent on community and cyclcing development over the past few months. All the details are on the website.
  5. Stayed in a cottage in town last year. Was great. Will see if I can find the details. Will probably not be able to make this year's ride.
  6. Also consider the Scott Reflex range. More relaxed geometry than the Scale hardtails and good value for money (IMHO).
  7. Finish off with several layers of clear coat. As many as you think is neccessary and then 1 more. Then allow at least a week or two for the paint to harden before reassembling the bike.
  8. Fizik Gobi, might be a little over 1K though? Using a Fizik Nisene myself, very comfortable (most of my 40k + rides on the MTB are well over 3 hours )
  9. I'm pretty sure the entries were limited to 2500 (apart from the champs).. 750 for each of the 66 and 42 k events (3 groups of 250 each). Entries were extended as the two longer distances were not completley full yet? I think last year there were about 2000 riders total.
  10. Still used mine to do the 2002 Argus. (Bought it new in 1988 or '89 I think). Then donated it to B.E.N. Still regret doing that.
  11. On the lower sections there seemed to be a number of "fountains" that have appeared....if it was in town I'd suspect a broken water main! Problem is that the single track sections offer a natural runoff option. I have noticed (on the Lower Canary last year) that simply making a furrow off the track with a suitably sized stick is actually very effective in diverting water. The fact is that most of us don't want to stop to do stuff like this...
  12. According to the tour website, they should finish the Alp around 17:10
  13. Singletrack river? Last weekend in Jonkershoek, on one of the sections we used to call the "River singletrack" .....
  14. [Hijack on] That would be an Armadillo...IMHO one of the dumbest animals on the face of the earth... [/Hijack off]
  15. I had problems with my QR clamp on and off....I found that after very bumpy, technical ST descents the post would slip a mm or so. So, one day, when I tried to "fasten it properly" the QR bolt sheared off. Changed to an Allen key bolt and even a very recent endo did not budge the seatpost at all.
  16. My son has a pair of Specialized Pro's, very happy with them (2years, no visible problems). And this is in WC conditions, mud, rain, river crossings, mud, dust, rocks, mud..... On the other hand, I have used a pair of Olympics for the past 3 years and they are still going strong (at about 60% of the cost of the Spez's)
  17. ML, maybe you should shop around on the "alternative" marketplace... According to the guys at my local LBS (same as yours), some guy bought a brand new XT wheelset a few weeks ago, and then left the front wheel outside his car when he packed his bike after a ride....drove off and only discovered the wheel was missing when he got home. And I need to know..where was the dreaded green snot? Normally turns up in areas that has a low bike traffic.
  18. For a simple comparison: standard compact is 50/34. If you run a 11-23 casette at the back your most difficult gear ratio will be 4.54 (50-11), while the easiest will be 1.47 (34-23). With a standard 53/39, the ratios will be 4.81 (53-11) and 1.69 (39-23). So you lose about 6% on the most difficult gear if you go to a compact, while the lightest gear is about 13% "easier" with the compact. Conversely if you stay with 53/39 and use a 12-25 casette the compact option (with a 11-23) has a slightly higher ratio for the biggest gear (4.54 vs 4.41) while the lowest gear is still easier for the compact (1.47 vs 1.56) Ok, this is getting confusing. I'm going on lunch now.
  19. When I left JHK at 5:45 pm last Thursday, I was chilled to the bone....despite several layers of clothing, arm warmers, wind cheater etc. Don't know how you folk manage it! BTW, careful at the bottom of the Elioti, logging has kind of wiped out the last 100 or so meters (or at least it had done so when I was there on Sunday)
