  1. Like? Not being facetious....just want to know. We have complained, etc...they "send out patrols"...which is a dude on a scooter who spends most of his time parking under a bush and drinking with the bergies.
  2. Amen to that. I live less than 300 m from the entrance to the hill on the Onderpapegaaiberg side, and I have not ridden there for over 6 months now. It is actually quite sick. GL, where did the attack occur? Near the top, or down near the cemetery?
  3. Some races the numbers stay pretty much the same...some races went through a jump in numbers caused by agressive advertising and positive press....only to drop off once this effort lapsed. For myself, I believe the biggest contributing factor has been the swing to MTB, simply because it is much nicer to train here... than to dodge taxis and trucks out on the open road...and it is better to "race" when you have views like this en route.... rather than admiring the dry grass fields and gum trees near Malmesbury while leaning into the South Easterly gale.... I do virtually all my training for the Argus off-road now. Just do some fun rides to get used the road bike.
  4. OK, this has been sorted. PPA dealt with the complaint.
  5. Queries are passed onto WT by the PPA. Mistakes get corected in the week that follows; with them having timed three events this past weekend (Fast One, Die Wingerd and The Rollercoaster) things might take a little longer than normal. PM me if you continue to have no luck and I will follow it up for you.
  6. ...and as I cycle up there at least twice a week I can attest that very few drivers seem to know that the speed limit all the way to Jonkershoek is 60 km/h. Plus there is a very prominent sign that says: Please be careful, road used by cyclists and runners. I do not want to defend people that take up more space on the road than they need to, but the road to JH is a dead end, the only reason that you would want to drive there is if you are on your way to JH to walk/cycle/pcinic, or if you live there. I quite frequently drive up there as well, for a late afternoon single track session, and frequently encounter groups cycling up or down. It is difficult passing even a single cyclist if a car approaches from the front, but the very nature of the road dictates that I will wait until it safe to pass.
  7. The question I want answered is not why I can balance a moving bicycle, but rather why I fall off a moving MTB so many times......oh wait, I think the falling off bit usually happens when I suddenly stop moving
  8. Except for the "pre-Argus" season when the southern suburb chappies dust off the bikes and do the Pensinsule rides, I'd guess the majority of the riders at the funriders come from the Northern suburbs, SSW and the "Platteland".......
  9. I'll be there. Rding through from Stellenbosch, marshal, start at the back end of the long ride, have a hamburger, ride back to Stellenbosch (maybe) Mrs C...it's a late start, ride starts at 07:00, not the usual 06:30.
  10. Dunno what you are complaining about...Killarney was fine last night..... Had a chat to Chrispy...., watched the groups go by......got a Coke from the car......met Ronelle...spoke to Pedal....watched the groups go by..watched the finish.....collected family member and went home. And yes, the German was there, finished 3rd I think
  11. Weird if the comment about the exclusivity of the Maties club is true... if so, the club will die off again. There are some places that you can get info regarding clubs/rides (always better to speak to the active cyclists in town). There is a MTB group that rides from Mason's Bike Inn most afternoons (around 17:00 - 17:30 I think, check with Masons). There are also two groups riding every morning (road) at 6.00 am. PM me and I'll supply the details. I trust that you have been introduced to Jonkershoek already? Be aware that there are other areas that you can also ride your MTB around Stellenbosch that are not as safe as they have been in the past.
  12. Really sad news. Deepest sympathy to the whole family.
  13. I have been using the Aksiums for about 6 months now, and I can honestly say that I am perfectly happy. Can't say that I have noticed any real issue in the wind (of course, now that I have read this thread, the next time I ride in the wind I'll probably imagine that I do feel the effect!). I believe the Shimano WH 550's had some issue with spokes breaking regularly. My son uses a set of WH 560's and has had zero problems in two years of use.
  14. Classic! I had an Alsation that took it as a personal insult whenever a new shrub was planted in "her" garden.....used to rip them out and chew them. About a year ago my garden also looked like a snowstorm hit it after my Boxer took exception to my neighbour's duck swimming in our pool..
  15. I did suggest exactly that w.r.t the "racing marshals" for all funrides; we have a problem that most of the start marshals for PPA events end up riding at the back of the short ride. So we went ahead and tried it (within the last three weeks)' date=' looked for volunteers via the weekly PPA e-mail to members, and also here on the hub. The net result was exactly 5 volunteers initially (which is great, 5 is a darn sight better than none!), but it's not exactly as though we were inundated with offers...[/quote']Having volunteer marshals in the group is only a single aspect of the solution. What good are they if they are simply ignored - and they will be ignored!!!! This I know from first hand experience. Their efforts are completely undermined if the organisation does not take a clear stand. The rules have to be enforced then see how many volunteers you will get. You make a good point...it is a little frustrating when a rider is reported and then eventually nothing is done (or seen to be done), but apparently the days when a simple diciplinary hearing resulted in a suspension is over...apparently we now have riders turning up with lawyers, threatening court action BUT, the reason people are not volunteering is simply human nature. Most of us want to sit and blame somebody else when things go wrong. Very few people are willing to actually do stuff. From experience I know that when you have no road closure (as is the case in most instances) and your start groups get bigger than 50 riders, you end up with problems in traffic. Simply put, when you have 150 + riders in a group, you will get problems. We had people all over the road in the lower bunches as well. The same idiot nearly got totalled by a car three times on the Wemmershoek road.

  17. The glass is still there....the road surface is only really bumpy through two turns, ruts and potholes are on the inside of the corners, so just go a little wider. Dont think it needs to be resurfaced. It's a damn sight better than some of the road surface on the West Coast Express...but I guess the potholes will be filled in eventually (I hope). I just hope they close the damn gate once the race is over, that will keep the tikkoppe etc out, so we will maybe see less glass. At 6 a.m this morning there was a car parked about halfway up the pass with two characters standing next to it knocking back a few quarts of Black Label..
  18. Not true. You can't brake later and harder as a result. With both brakes you have more than enough power - enough being the point where the wheel loses traction. It is a myth that disc brakes offer more power - they may have (who knows) but it cannot be proven or used' date=' since traction is the limiting factor. [/quote'] Interesting topic this. Johan, what is the difference in contact area between the pads/rims for V's and in the case of disks? Will this not play a role in stopping the bike? My physics is crap, but will a larger contact area not generate more friction (analogous to a woman maybe slipping on polished floor in high heels while not doing so in flat-heeled shoes?)
