  1. I think you need to get out more often.!
  2. Bicycling was always just a "pretty little magazine" with about as much meat as a cheese sandwich, aimed at the entry level market who just wanted to know if it was cool to wear white socks with a red bike.!! Personally, I think Ride is just as pathetic, but thats just me.! For their mass markets they are probably fine, but if you are even in the least remotely serious, the magazine is just a waste of time. Lately it seems they have also been useing the old publishers trick of printing on thicker and thicker paper to make the magazine look bulky with the same or less content. ........and frankly that content is about as inspiring as a gem squash.! Save your bucks and buy Pro-cycling or Cycle sport every second or third month and see what a serious cycling magazine is all about.
  3. The CSA IS useless, on the 94.7 entry page the club I belong to is not even listed, nor are a few others I can name - all of them are CSA affiliated clubs - so now when you enter, it says you are not "registered with CSA" and I assume you will be forced to buy a temporary license.? - even though you have done the "right thing" and joined a club, paid over for a license etc,etc - its a joke.!
  4. Thats likely to achieve little. Importers have the rights to make decisions regarding their business model in the country of distribution and manufacturers will honour that decision. That extends to who they do business with, product lines, warranties etc. Coolheat may not see it as "lousy service" just the way they do business. The company I contract to is one of the largest construction companies in the African continant, yet a certain Korean manufacturer chooses not to supply us with earth moving equipment because they have contracts in place with other construction companies - its not personal, its just business.!
  5. Well, I crashed and broke an STI about a year ago, took it to the local shop and asked em to fix it, they called me back a few days later and said Coolheat wouldnt sell a single STI - I had to buy the set of two.!! So I got online and bought a single STI. Dinosaur thinking, in my opinion, I was quite happy to buy it locally, but they drove me away. Now, I buy nothing locally, crikey, last time I even bought 30 tubes in with my order, were they cheaper? I dont know, I never bothered to work it out, actually I dont care, if they dont want my business and money, thats fine, there are others who do.! I like the attitude of Mr Els and his company, nicely in line with the rest of the world.
  6. The problem with testing a saddle is it feels great in the shop for 2 minutes but is absolute " hell" after two hours on the road. I always used Selle Italia and they were fine, but a few months ago I bought a Fizik Arione (I think - cant remember the name) and it was a "b*****d for two months, I almost threw it away and probably would have if I wasnt so lazy and its too a big hassle to take it off - but then one day it just started feeling better and better, now I think its really nice, I am real comfortable and I dont get numb. Frankly, I dont think you can buy a saddle on a suggestion from here, if you cant ride one before you buy I think its a case of "hit and miss" until you get one you like.
  7. This rumor surfaced some time back on a blog. Hardly the most reliable source of information. Personally I think he has more important issues to attend to, like dating the anorexic, waif like Olsen twins and wasting more water on his ranch than a small town. Anyway, anything to do with the Olsens is too "creepy" for me so I wish him well.
  8. I cant see the need for it, we arnt talking aerospace tolerances and technology here, we are talking bicycles for heavens sake.! Tighten up till it "feels" tight to you, thats it. ! When I was an appy, my journey man always said, hold the spanner in the middle and tighten the fastener down, not on the end which allows you to apply too much torque - its worked for me ever since.
  9. It also depends on the injury. Actually more so.! I have had two cervical joints fused c5+6+7 after a heavy absailing accident. The disc between 6+7 was broken off and bits were stuck between my spinal cord and the vertebra and the disc between 5+6 was bulging out like a balloon, but the worst part was one of the nerves had been displaced and was trapped between the disc and the vertebra - the pain was so intense I almost passed out on occassions. I lost complete muscular use of my left arm within 12 hours of the accident due to the severe nerve entrapment and the neuro said if he didnt operate NOW, IMMEDIATELY, RIGHT AWAY, NO DELAYS,PRONTO,HASTA HASTA, there was a chance of the nerve been permanently damaged and the loss of use in my arm. Anyway, recovery was slow, 6 months minimum but today I am back to normal, no after effects no problems nothing, I can run, cycle do whatever pain free. ...........but I dont absail anymore.!
  10. I must be the odd one out here, cycling for me is just another "pass time" - I enjoy it but if I cant / dont feel like going, I dont beat myself up about it. I enjoy a variety of sports, I like running, cycling, swimming, hiking, golf (okay maybe its not a sport) canoeing, water skiing and I have recently just got qualified as a scuba diver - I can see I am gonna enjoy this as well. As for leaving parties early or skipping a night out with mates or my wife - not gonna happen - I find that simply too "one dimensional", Bruce Fordyce once said "he never associates with other runners, cos then thats all he hears and talks about" - I tend to agree, cycling , running talk is fine in small doses but I get quickly bored when all I hear is how fast you are, or how much you train, or how you LIVE for cycling, running etc - get a life man, its a big world, lots to do and see.! In short, yes, I like to be moving, but with all my joints and muscles not just the rotational ones on my lower limbs.! porky2008-08-31 04:15:51
  11. I agree Sean. Heres a Dad who tries to make a differance in a fun interesting way, whats not to like.!
  12. this reminds me of Adelle inctroduction in Ride mag a month or two ago. For the boys birthday his dad took him and some friends to Wimpby' date=' Dad dressing as Batman/Superman, those underpants, how can someone like that be a hero?, what a plonker. Goodness.. do something creative. shows the imagination doing the rounds in this country.[/quote'] I am lost here?? - I seldom read Ride Magazine and when I do I seldom agree or find merit in any of Adelles features. ...But, be that as it may.............. Which boys are we referring to?? Whats wrong with a Dad taking his kids to Wimpy and dressing up. Is it not rather presumptious to pass judgement on that family.?
  13. Ag................" Cry me a river".! I dont see any breach of contract been brought up here. So you dont agree with / bump heads with / your manager - join the other 5 million folk out here in the real world.! So you have to work "your butt off" - Hmmm let me see,......... the rest of the work force in SA justs sits around and drinks tea??? So you didnt get arm warmers?? - Well blow me down, what a calamity. Go buy your own for heavens sake. The world dos not owe you a job or a living, if you dont like your conditions of employment, leave and get a job in the real world.!! ............but they dont buy you arm warmers out here either.!
  14. The problem is that any initiatives like this have to deal with the administrators/politicians at some point. Very frustrating cos they really are just bricks in the road... Hmm, fair enough, but I just think you are all just a tad too far down the road already. We dont have a large pool of elite gymnasts, rowers, runners, cyclists, field and track athletes, whatever swimming around at the bottom of the pyramid, its more like a tiny goldfish bowl, and thats not going to carry through for long. No Sir, we need to get the kids interested again in sport, thats where the Olympians of the future will come from, and thats not just rugby, cricket and soccer, its a whole spectrum of sports, when I was in school, we had a swim team,a rowing team a gymnastics team, a field and track team a long distance running team IN ADDITION TO a rugby, cricket and soccer team. Gee, man we even had a band and a few pretty girls shouting for us. Get the kids out of the malls and onto the track, into the pool out on the bike and then you will see the future. Its here, its just not been nourished.
  15. I think we'll get one' date=' two maybe even three medals in Beijing ? Malaudzi in the 800m, Nhlapo in the BMX and maybe, just maybe, Ramaala can finish the Games on a good note with a medal in the men's marathon... See, I'm very optimistic! [/quote'] Yes, if you think Ramaala can get a medal you are the most optimistic person I know. he has never impressed me as medal material.
  16. It's a rule for all............ Typical dinosaur thinking. Stuck in the 1920 s mindset. Tell, me what differance dos it make??? What next, no finger nail polish or lip stick.?
  17. Yes, I agree. ............. I just cant be bothered to get worked up anymore, and people ask why we as S.Africans have such a negative view of our government in particular.
  18. The question should be "If you are fined, will you pay up?"

  20. I had a beard for about 5 years, but I eventually started to look like "Joopie Adam" so I shaved it off and left the Mustache which I have had for, I guess 20 odd years, - its gone a bit grey lately, but hey, I will never shave it off.
  21. I agree "stay away from Chiros" with a serious nerve impingement. My neuro was fond of saying "The biggest cause of neck injuries in this country is rugby, the second is chiropracters" Okay, Okay, before I start getting legal letters from chiropracters who disagree, its very true, with a serious neck or back nerve or disc impingement a chiro will just make it worse, actually any chiro worth his / her salt wont even work on a patient with such an injury before at least getting a neuros permission and seeing a set of scans or X rays.
