With some exceptions. And shooting the neighbor's cat is not one of the exceptions. It is illegal to discharge a pellet gun in town.. Unless it is on a registered shooting range. 2. A 4.5mm airgun with a muzzle velocity of 1250f/s even with a 6 grain pellet produces 20 foot pound energy. In some countries in Europe you need a FAC (firearms certificate) to own a pellet producing more than 16J or 12 fpe. 3. Ruthless killing of what YOU deem pests might be frowned on by others. Don't take the law in your own hands. 4. If you shoot it, eat it. Don't be cruel. 5. Manufacturers of air guns are notorious for overstating the muzzle velocities of their products. Call it marketing. "Results may vary". To obtain the advertised velocities manufacturers usually use the lightest pellet they can find (like the Gamo raptor platinum, less than 5 grains) at sea level. And then add a few f/s for good measures. 6, Airguns are GREAT fun. And cheap to run. 500 top quality pellets like the JSB Exact sells for R220. 20x 308 Win cartridges sells for around R600. 7. In South Africa you do not need a license for an air rifle with a bore of 5.5mm or less.

By the way. This is one of my 308's. A 1980's plankgeweer. The blocks are 1 inch. The black square is 5cmx5cm 2x 4 shot groups . Distance 100m. Indoor range. 168gr Hornady Amax and 165gr Sierra game king. On a really good day, ideal conditions I can hit a 10cm gong @ 500m 4/5. On a crappy range day I cannot hit a 20cm gong @ 500m in 10 shots.

Competition shooting? Long range? Long barrel life? Cheap? Eish. difficult combo. 6.5 Creed eats barrels compared to 308. 6.5 Creed outshoots a 308 over 800m 300 WM. Kicks. Same goes for 300 WSM 308 usually runs cheaper and with less fuss.

Depending on where you hunt. Eastern cape smaller 70kg Northern Transvaal: 120kg. I still have to see a kudu cow of bigger than 130kg. If a good fisherman shoots a kudu cow it can easily end up 300kg.... A third of the carcass is bone.

My son asked me for a camp knife /chopper. I made one from bohler k110. 8mm spine. Quite a long day grinding... After hardening I sharpened the edge to 25deg (v shape edge). It did not last long before micro chipping could be seen with a magnifying glass. I must say he really tried his best to test it. Stabbing, chopping wood, log splitting... I changed the edge to a convex grind. The initial sharp 'feel' of the edge was less, but it lasted much longer. With very little edge damage.

The reason I ask is that I have quite a selection of working knives made of various steels. 1045, 1095, 1095cro van, UHB20C(similar to 1095), 5160, 12C27, 1.4116, 420, 420HC, VG10, 8cr13mov, aus8, N690, N680, Schleinper and M390. Always interesting how these measure up with different grinds, hardnesses and sharpening angles. Hair poppers vs edge stability vs usable cutting edge. I have 2 blades in d2. One is a Steel Will (advertised as rockwill 58-60) and the other one is a Kizlyar. Same specs. BUT the Steel Will Modus will take a 17deg edge (Lansky sharpener) and the kizlyar amigo might take it, but will have micro chipping of the cutting edge at this angle. I will see if a 20deg angle lasts longer.
