  1. Kaiings are pieces of deep-fried fat. Usually lamb (from the tail) or pork. To make it you cut the fat into little blocks, about the size of a dice, then you start frying that in a pan. You keep going until the blocks have shrunk to a more solid form. The lard that you fry off like that is great to use in cooking. The solid bits then get left to cool down and the great thing is because it is 100% saturated fat, it can last outside the fridge for quite a while. And that's kaiings - plain and simple. There are varieties where people then roll the kaiings in crumbs, but for LCHF purposes, that's not the way you want to go ! Unfortunately this takes a bit of time and can be quite messy (and smelly if you live e.g. in a flat or hostel), so buying it is often a more sensible option.
  2. tombeej, if you enjoyed "Rabbit Starvation" then you need to spend a while and read "The Fat of The Land" - Stefansson's original recount of his time spent with Eskimo's and his year in confinement in the Boston Medical Centre to prove that one could live off fat and meat alone - this was the book that inspired Dr Phinney to start looking into LCHF ! The link below still works, it will take you straight into the .pdf document, which is about 5.5MB big, and you can then do a "Save as" from the doc. Apart from the humour in reading a really old book that was written before Politically Correct was introduced, this has such a lot of absolutely valuable info that answers many of the questions posted on this forum. Do yourselves a favour and read it ! http://www.owndoc.com/pdf/The-fat-of-the-land.pdf
  3. Sorry HMT, missed your calcium question in my answer. No, I don't supplement calcium, the only mineral I supplement is Magnesium. This could lead to a whole other discussion, but there's a lot of new thinking out there that says on a proper Paleo-style diet (i.e. lots of fresh, real food) you do not need to supplement ANYTHING. I was a big believer in Multi-vitamin supplements but stopped taking them when I started LCHF and I feel better than ever and I have had no ill effects. If you really start looking at the vitamin and mineral content of real fresh produce including meat (sorry Martin), you will soon see that you probably consume well in excess of the RDA.
  4. The ketones that end up in your urine are basically "wasted" ketones, i.e. not used by the body for fuel. IIRC ketones only have a lifespan of about 2 minutes in the body and then get excreted either via your breath (keto-breath) or via your urine. So the higher the concentration in your urine, the more your body had to waste - if that makes sense ? Drinking a lot of water may have an effect on that, but I have not experienced that. My ketone measurements on the sticks have always roughly tracked my blood ketones - and the keto stix are always "pessimistic" - so I have had trace on the stix and way more than trace on the blood ketone meter, but never the other way around. It appears that the body does give preference to ketones as fuel once you are fully adapted, hence the fact that when (in my case) the keto stix read deep purple, I am usually in the +1.5 mmol range on the blood test as well (i.e. ketones that are circulating in my blood stream as fuel source). Agree with Martin on the dark green leafies - you probably cannot physically eat enough of that to get you out of ketosis.
  5. I don't want to know.....
  6. Cool - now the self-experimentation will start to get some meaning. You should be able to determine exactly what level of carb consumption is causing you to slip out of ketosis. BTW, the 5 weeks have nothing to do with it, you can go into ketosis within a day - just restrict your carbs right down and keep consuming MCT Oil (like coconut) and you should read deep purple within a day. Make sure you test at around about the same time every day - I usually checked my ketone levels just after waking and then just before dinner, sometimes just after a long, hard ride as well. Good luck and keep us posted !
  7. You've seen my DIY pics... I know the feeling (Black Blerrie phone)...
  8. Beauty knows no pain...
  9. When you go down to the woods today.... this was a lot more difficult than the picture shows, as there were several people walking their dogs off-leash during the shoot, so I eventually walked them away from it all, and this is where this pic comes from.
  10. 3. Flynn - The Fantastic Mr Flynn is another rescue from the BC Rescue in Malmesbury. He is the undisputed joker in the pack and is a truly agile dog that easily jumps up against an 8' wall to peek over it. He has heterochromia - one blue and one brown eye and on top of that one ear up and one ear down. The Jack Nicholson of dogs.
  11. 2. Max - High-energy Border Collie rescue from the BC Rescue near Malmesbury. Max suffers from a mild form of epilepsy and this may have been caused due to physical abuse as a puppy. He is the most alert of all my dogs and hears anything and everything and then gets the rest of the pack rallied up. He is a tri-colour BC and has incredibly long hair on his upper coat.
  12. Some pics of my 3 older rescues take earlier this year at a photoshoot in Glen Forest near Camps Bay (courtesy of Tamed & Framed Photography). 1. Gada - "The Guardian" and Alpha Male found emaciated in the Airport Industrial area about 2 years ago, riddled with tick bite fever and completely malnutritioned, he has blossomed into becoming the pack leader and main guard dog.
  13. And a deep and brief article on protein from Arnie's website (this is only part 1): http://www.schwarzenegger.com/fitness/post/the-protein-bible-part-1-introduction
  14. Some weekend reading from Dr Mark Hyman : Three hidden ways Wheat makes you Fat http://drhyman.com/blog/2012/02/13/three-hidden-ways-wheat-makes-you-fat/
  15. Interestingly enough, on most days I have a piece of droewors within about an hour of glugging the shake down. It's more habit than anything else, but the salty meaty taste does indeed help with nausea in a big way. Bro, you are a MACHINE.
  16. Just a tip from having had exactly the same experience. Save your local Post Office's number and start calling them from about day 3. Every time I have had something shipped to my PO Box, I phone, they go look and tell me it is there, and then for days the website still shows "In transit". This was a great system when they introduced it some years ago, but clearly the bug has fallen off the cork somewhere and it ain't working anymore.
  17. P.A.K. for any exercise under 90 minutes in duration you should really have no need for any supplementation at all. Taking MCT oil prior to exercise takes a while to get used to - see the references on here about people getting nausea from that, and it won't be a great feeling to have while spinning. In my experience you also need to take the oil about an hour before you ride to get benefit from that, the digestive process delays he uptake of the oil significantly, unlike commercial energy drinks which can enter the bloodstream via the gut wall. If the spinning classes are of very high intensity, i.e. you are running above your VO2Max threshold for most of the time, your body will burn carbs like grass in a veld fire, if the intensity is below that, you may as well use the time on the spinning bike to adapt to fat burning - and by that I mean bodyfat, so don't supplement with anything.
  18. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterdale_Terrier This is a pic from the web of a Patterdale Terrier, which could be the twin brother of my boy Romeo. Anyone on this board have any experience with Patterdale Terriers ?
  19. Very cool pic Bennie !
  20. I swear they could be the parents of my boy Romeo if I look at his key features and colouring Fuzzy, out of focus picture proudly brought to you by Blackberry Bold, officially the worst phone camera in the Universe.
  21. tombeej, yes this can easily be replicated and it is the reason for my rather large consumption of coconut oil in the fatshake recipe. REMEMBER - coconut oil is a true MCT oil and cannot be stored in the body as energy source (fat) - it is either burned as fuel or it goes out the poop chute, as simple as that !
  22. @flexia sells a product called MCT Power Plus, which comes in sachet. I used it with great effect when I just started out on LCHF and I think if you are a fat-adapted athlete it could make a great on-the-bike fuel. I have scanned the side of the box containing the label, so my apologies for the less than professional quality of this.
  23. Snoek is also a great source of oily fish / Omega - 3 and should be available from most fishmongers.
  24. An announcement is imminent... And... wait for it.... it is as a direct result of my ad on TheHub ! Bless TheHub and all of you on it for your support.
  25. Sounds like your fat intake in general is just very low, P.A.K. Do you not have a lack of energy, or are you still taking a fair amount of carbs ?
