  1. I have copied this to the dropbox folder as well. @tombeej - huge ask again - can you perhaps supply approximate dimensions of that box, just so we can get a perspective of where that heater shelf is relative to the box size, asseblief ?
  2. On the above topic....
  3. Ooh ah eh... surely he has not "supplemented" during the bulk-up phase....
  4. The problem may not be gluten, but rather wheat per se... hence the suggestion to cut all wheat to self-experiment. If it works, you can try adding gluten free products back. Just as a complete aside, Pronutro is probaby the worst breakfast you can eat from a blood glucose perspective. According to the South Africa Glycemic Index & Load Guide, Pronutro (Classic) has a GI of 78 and Chocolate Pronutro 90 !!! (Neat glucose is 100 just for reference). Just saying.... edit : Futurelife GI = 50
  5. Mmm... that does present an interesting alternative to the wooden casing, but wood holds a certain authenticity and charisma - my dad had a wooden box that he used as a smoker back in the day and I think back to that fondly. Marine ply is on order...
  6. Took my two "kids" to the Cape Animal Medical Centre yesterday as both developed badly stained adult teeth, Romeo's was particularly bad as there were black marks through the enamel on some of his front teeth. Went to see a very friendly and knowledgeable animal dental specialist, Dr Cedric Tutt, who explained that this typically happens when they get a viral infection as a puppy and pups in shelters are exposed to many different diseases.... Long story short, my boykie now has some really shiny and white front teeth, except for his upper left fang, which has not developed, probably due to taking a knock on the nose when he was very young. It is in the jaw but won't ever develop - but it is not used in the normal course of things in any case. -R4.5k later, and you thought kids were expensive, eish...
  7. Lots of people report good results on FutureLife, but the ideal breakfast would be something like eggs, cheese, bacon & bangers - minus the slice of toast underneath that ! edit : the croissants above are indeed made from pastry and pastry is made from flour, so yes, if you react to wheat you will react to that as well.
  8. A great Kickstarter project is on the go - there is a documentary movie being made called "Carb Loaded - A Culture Dying to Eat" and if you scroll down on the link below, our Prof Noakes even makes a guest appearance as one of the interviewees in the movie ! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/969284482/carb-loaded-a-culture-dying-to-eat
  9. Jungle Oats bars will produce slime (for me) every time. So will Coke, or any other commercial "energy drink" like Energade. Skip the wheat the day and morning before your next ride and see - I am very keen to hear ! Difficult to recommend energy drinks as again they may have different reactions for different people, but stick with the well-known brands like Hammer, High5, 32GI and such - the more natural the better. Of course my real answer should be that you should try a Low Carb eating plan so you don't need to fuel with carbs on ordinary rides, but that's a whole other story
  10. Marge, scroll back a couple of 100 posts, I posted the UCAN person's contact details there (just search this thread for UCAN). You need to keep in mind that you have not allowed sufficient time to adapt completely to fat burning, therefore on the more serious rides you will have to supplement with carbs from early on. It takes about 4 months of riding at varying intensities without carbs for your body to fully build that fat burning engine. edit : found the UCAN details Team UCAN:: Daneel :: Mobile :: 082 336 9462 :: Mail :: GenUCAN.SA@gmail.com
  11. Although not MTB specific, Maffetone is a must have if you want to build a good training plan: http://www.amazon.com/The-Book-Endurance-Training-Racing/dp/1616080655/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375705044&sr=8-1&keywords=maffetone
  12. Wow !!! Dankie, Sniffie !!! (ek het gewonder hoekom jy so stil is, ons moes net die regte knoppies druk )
  13. Check the label - if it is "fresh cream" then there should be no added emulsifiers, etc. Real cream should have a fat content of around 40g / 100g and carbs around 2-3g / 100g. If the values are way off, then you know it has been processed or sweetened. Also keep in mind that not everyone reacts the same to dairy, so you may have no insulinogenic response from milk, where I may have. Cream is the safest bet in that regard and I would even thin the cream with water to get it to a more milky consistency rather than drink milk if it meant I could keep my BG down. Last thing - remember as well that fats suppress the insulin response, which is why a high fat item like cream has almost no effect on your BG. What I do for a snack sometimes is I mix Nomu with about 70% cream and 30% milk, and that has no effect on my BG. I reckon enough cream over apple pie and we should all be ok
  14. Just a late thought - you know that you can freeze butter, effectively giving it a virtually unlimited "shelf life" ?
  15. I am expecting a result that will say we can do a lot more without carbs than we thought ! Look at the performances of people like Oscar Chalupsky and Bruce Fordyce on no carbs in recent ultra-events.... all under the guidance of Prof Noakes.... Sitting on the edge of my seat !
  16. It is most likely a reaction to carbs, and most typical of a reaction to wheat. So if you are having e.g. toast as part of your pre-ride breakfast (or most any cereal for that matter), cut that out for 2 - 3 days and see if it improves. If you had to ask that same question on the LCHF forum you will have a myriad of people telling you exactly the same thing - the phlegm is an inflammatory response to carbs of some sort .
  17. @tombeej. On the plastic PC fan - I have just had a snoop around, make sure you have a 220V version and not the 12V PC variety, otherwise you will need a step-down transformer etc etc. How much weight is lost in the drying process - from my discussions it appears about one third at least goes out the airholes as evaporated water ? And thanks again for that extensive document, I really appreciate the effort !!! @krouxsa - that is one healthy piece of meat in your pic. What do you pay per kg for rump or sirloin (can't quite read the fine print on that label) ? Here the prices seem to be well above R100/kg for quality meat. @Sniffie - you have been far too quiet - there is a whole meat marketing opportunity opening up for you just on this thread. I should swing by your place when I next drive up to JNB and stock up on some good Free State beef ! edit: grammar
  18. You have created a monster....
  19. Here is the link that supports what we have been saying - you can keep going at sub-VO2Max on a ketogenic diet, but it does impair your VO2Max performance: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC524027/ "Both observational and prospectively designed studies support the conclusion that submaximal endurance performance can be sustained despite the virtual exclusion of carbohydrate from the human diet. Clearly this result does not automatically follow the casual implementation of dietary carbohydrate restriction, however, as careful attention to time for keto-adaptation, mineral nutriture, and constraint of the daily protein dose is required. Contradictory results in the scientific literature can be explained by the lack of attention to these lessons learned (and for the most part now forgotten) by the cultures that traditionally lived by hunting. Therapeutic use of ketogenic diets should not require constraint of most forms of physical labor or recreational activity, with the one caveat that anaerobic (ie, weight lifting or sprint) performance is limited by the low muscle glycogen levels induced by a ketogenic diet, and this would strongly discourage its use under most conditions of competitive athletics."
  20. There are studies like that, and if I am not mistaken at least one was done by Dr Phinney himself. Will have a look and see if I can find it.
  21. The one advantage of living inland is that you have dry air (at least during winter) and you can hang the billies to dry like you have shown. At the coast we have no option but to use a dryer. @tombeej, having had some time to mull over your design and having looked at some of the commercial units available, have you not thought of adding a small extraction fan to the top of that box to speed up the drying ? See pic below.
  22. Thanks, this bears out what we are all saying methinks. Low and slow on LC is like running on diesel, VO2Max effort and you have to start filling your petrol tank !
  23. Right, here's a Dropbox link with some reading material for you all (there's even a book for HappyMartin !). Not everything is LCHF-specific, but most of it is focused on Nutrition in general then. I will continue to add docs as I rummage through my folders and find stuff that may be of interest. Please let me have your feedback ! https://www.dropbox.com/sh/erzuuauqjgt3oay/tD5ubEFGmr
  24. That same principle applies to cancer treatment - and there's a lot of info on the web as you have undoubtedly already discovered ! I am a big Dr Mercola fan - so here's a quick link from his site: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/06/16/ketogenic-diet-benefits.aspx One of the key points being: "Your normal cells have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from using glucose to using ketone bodies. Cancer cells lack this ability so when you reduce carbs to only non-starchy vegetables, you effectively starve the cancer."
