  1. Strongs Wil6. I went through the same in May and my heart still aches for my old lady every day. The bond between man and his/her dog surpasses even human bonds in my mind. The connection we make with our dogs is at a spiritual level that is difficult to explain in words. I am posting this below in the hope that it will bring some comfort in this difficult time.
  2. Thanks Sniffie - I value your biltong making experience and feedback as I have had the supreme privilege of tasting a sample of your stock ! From my conversations it is clear that biltong making is indeed quite "personal" and each person seems to have their little tricks and preferences. The old man at Biltong Warehouse seems to have taken a liking to me, because I always buy the most fatty biltong, and he says "Ek hou van 'n man wat vet kan eet"
  3. Show me a pup that's not naughty... eish !
  4. Dude, that could be his brother !!! I am not sure what Romeo really is, but from research based on his looks, he is very close to a Patterdale Terrier (your guy looks like one too !) - and he has very typical Terrier behaviour, arrogance and over-confidence. I am sure that in his case it is just how the gene pool worked out for him, but have a look at the below link and tell me what you think ? (not the scruffy, wire-haired variety, he has a smooth coat as well). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Fell_Terrier and http://www.patterdale.net/ (There are some hectic Patterdale sites, as these dogs are still in active use to clear vermin from farmlands, and they were originally bred to get jackal out of their holes in rocky areas .... even the breed spec says that scars obtained while working should be seen a markers of courage and not detract from the overall look of the dog !)
  5. The closest I will ever get to one, yes
  6. @tombeej - had a long chat to the wise old man at Biltong Warehouse today about preventing that mold from appearing on the billies. He says Potassium is the answer and you only use a minute amount. One teaspoon per every 20kg of raw meat is enough to keep things fresh he says. So for your typical batch of e.g. 5kg of meat a quarter teaspoon should do it. He is against using salpeter (potassium nitrate) as he says that may sometimes result in a white powdery deposit on the meat. Use it, don't use it !
  7. Lots of questions in the past about what to eat on LCHF and what types of dishes to prepare. This is quite a nifty website when it comes to LCHF recipes and she even has a cool idea for LCHF pasta, if you simply cannot go without Lasagna anymore http://www.lchfmalta.com/ @Francois - do you still pin links to the top of the thread ?
  8. And now a wet queen sized bed...
  9. Uhm... what that site again, Dad ? Was it bc.com or bordercollie.com ?
  10. Nope, the 3 of them got engaged in the destruction of a branch that fell off a palm tree in my yard, and did not notice the downpour that followed, so they are SOAKING wet... I switched the heater on in the room (I expected Little Fish to AT LEAST notice that) and old Gada parked himself right in front of it while the pups went for the pillows....
  11. Ja, sorry. My time-space continuum has been disturbed... PM me your cell number and we will stay in touch.
  12. Just for MONS and Little Fish (ok, and Uni) ... What happened here ???
  13. Wish I could, car's packed to the rafters with stuff from the family to the family... Oh well, at least in spinning class the view is quite cool...
  14. #uramachine #jysyster
  15. We could schedule something for 25/9 as well, but I know Sundays are when most people are out riding.... mos.
  16. So I am travelling up to Jozi for 2 weeks of training this coming weekend. Next weekend I will be staying with my boet who lives in Old Irene Farm village, so I was thinking if there are any of you that are close to that area who may want to meet for a cup of java on Saturday (24/9) sometime, send me a PM and we can arrange that ?
  17. Double cream Greek yoghurt and Nomu Skinny, then add about a scoop of protein powder as it makes it nice and thick !
  18. @krl747 - here's a nice synopsis about the benefits of varying % of carbs in diets from Paul Jaminet's site : (http://perfecthealthdiet.com/) "The Longevity vs Fertility and Athleticism Trade-off I won’t enumerate studies here, but animal studies indicate that higher carb and protein intakes promote fertility and athleticism, while restriction of carbohydrate and protein promotes longevity. In our book, we calculate the daily glucose requirements of the human body at around 600 to 800 calories, or 30% to 40% of energy on a 2000-calorie diet. So a 30-40% carb diet is a neutral diet, which probably places minimal stress on the body. A 40-50% diet is a carb-overfed diet, which probably promotes fertility and athleticism. A 20-30% diet is a mildly carb-restricted diet, which probably promotes longevity. Do we see diminished longevity with higher carb consumption in human epidemiological data? I think so."
  19. HMT - how is the milk addition working for you ? Any effects on blood sugar levels or are you ok as it is ? What Attia says in the video you posted is also quite valuable to remember - if you time the intake of (milk/carbs) your food correctly, you are basically just replenishing your glycogen stores and not affecting your level of ketosis.
  20. Just a word on PUFA's... I would encourage wider reading on the topic. Making a blanket statement that PUFA's are toxic may be confusing to some - keeping in mind that Omega 3 and Omega 6 are both PUFA's. Whilst flaxseed oil is not for everyone (and I'd be the first to admit that the taste of it does not appeal to me), it is still a valuable source of Omega 3 to someone like my wife who is allergic to fish and thus really has limited choices for alternative sources of Omega 3 supplementation. Flaxseed also has a proven capability to reduce breast cancer, as well as several other health benefits which has been proven for centuries. I include some links if you want to do your own research: http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/supplement/flaxseed-oil http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/benefits-of-flaxseed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyunsaturated_fat
  21. You will notice a colour difference between base and mattress - this is a spare bed in my "computer room" and the dogs have claimed the bed as their own - we now circulate the top half of the bedding through the wash once a week and this means that colour coordination gets a little out of synch... and with a wet winter here it doesn't make it any easier @Uni - it gets a little challenging in winter, but we have managed to work something out. Usually we have no more than 4 of the 6 in the "real" bed, but we have squeezed all of us in at times. And the pups just sleep on top of you, so they really take up minimal space
  22. Ja sorry, I cropped the pic to remove all the evidence. Don't want to end up with stalkers like Tumbleweed
  23. Cold and rainy day in Cape Town, so the 6 are quite happy to huddle together on "their" bed behind me
  24. From Mark's Daily Apple, an excerpt from The Paleo Primer. Simple, 40 minute chicken curry. Nom nom.
