  1. Apples for me stimulates my appetite big time. It is as if my stomach juices are awakened by eating them. Nowadays I only eat apples on a saturday or sunday long ride. If you want to be strict low carb rather leave it out, at least initially.
  2. Are you trying to avoid all carbs during a ride or just the gel/ gu? Because if you are going to take no carbs and you are not fully fat adapted you are going to bonk sooner or later. If you are looking for a substitute for gels and gu there are plenty of ideas. Fresh or died fruit, raisins, dates, honey etc. You might try a product like 'Generation Ucan' which is a so called super starch. You can make your own starchy energy drink by making "slap pap" which is a drinkable form of maize meal porridge. Dit loop soos stroop op 'n bicycle! Plenty of ideas! Experiment and find something which is palatable for you and works.
  3. When I know I am in for a hard ride I would take my energy (Carbofuel from Cadence) at 75% of the recommended strength in one bottle and water in the other. I would aim to consume roughly 1 bottle and one gel per hour, as per JC's recommendation. I take the gel followed immediately by at least 250 ml water to prevent the stomach cramps. The carbs in the Carbofuel from Cadence is derived from maltodextrin and fructose at a ratio of 2:1 and because of that it is not nauseatingly sweet. As a more natural source of energy I would often use dates. That is If you can manage to chow on the bike. On super long rides I would also take some droë wors, but be careful, to much of this while on a hard ride will cause serious indigestion and eventually dehydration problems. For a evening before a race nothing beats a good steak and some veggies. Now you can also incorporate some butter nut or sweet potato. I am a cattle farmer so I might be biased on the steak, but pasta never worked for me, even in my high carb days, always felt flat and hungry the next morning. Important thing is to experiment and try to figure out what works for you, as we are all different.
  4. Great post! Coconut oil is your best friend for appetite suppressing and getting into ketosis ASAP.
  5. Hi Dave.As I mentioned in a previous post on this thread I think that the taste of coconut is one of those that you either love or hate. Not sure if it is the kind of taste that can "grow on you." I am one of the fortunate ones that's just mad about the taste! I add about 30 ml to my early morning coffee with full cream milk or cream. Also use it to fry eggs or minute steak or boerewors for breakfast. I consume whatever CO remains in the pan after frying. I also add a tablespoon or two to my veggies at lunch or dinner. When we sometimes cook a leaner cut of beef for Sunday lunch I would drench my portion in CO while the rest of the family would go for the gravy. I seem to remember that you are a big tea lover? So you will think I am insane, but I even add a teaspoon or two to my tea on occasion. What I would suggest since you are not mad about the taste is to use it half and half with your favorite fats when frying up something. I don't know if you use butter or olive oil or a combination of both, but try replacing half with the CO and see how it goes down? Perhaps try a teaspoon of CO with butter over your veggies as well. Hope you find a way to make it palatable for you!
  6. @ Da Vinci. I am in the same boat as you are WRT going off the rails since Sani, but I am back on the straight and narrow since yesterday morning. According to the ketostix I am already back in ketosis this morning. The longer I have been on LCHF the easier it seems to turn my fat burning on after an "off the rails" episode. I don't even get "carb flu" symptoms any more. BTW coconut oil has been proved to assist the body to kickstart the fat burning and get you into ketosis quicker. It is sometimes used by doctors treating children with uncontrollable epilepsy to kickstart ketosis.
  7. Remove all meat from the fat, this is important. Cut fat into dice sized cubes and render on low heat on stove top. Patience is the key as it is easy to burn the kaaings if the heat is to high. Drain the fat from the kaaings and pat dry with paper towel. Add salt to taste.
  8. Droë wors or fatty biltong from a reputable butcher.
  9. All things apple are quicker and easier, but let's not highjack this thread.
  10. On the settings screen (the little spanner) of the apple , right at the bottom you can select the type of brake, the last option is unpair. Try to unpair it and see if the computer does not "find" the brake then. Good luck.
  11. Huge respect! Saw your bikes a couple of times in the bikepark. What was your total time?
  12. Amen Brother! No need for expensive cleaning agents. Whatever you have in the house will do the job. Paraffin, dishwashing liquid even a small amount of washing powder and warm water, shake shake shake and clean!
  13. I tried Smoove for the first time at Sani this year, and I was not impressed. Applied it to a sparkling clean chain the night before. It was an extremely dry and dusty race this year, and shortly after the crossing of the PG bison floating bridge the pawpaw hit the fan. Die ketting het begin skree soos 'n maer vark wat se keel met 'n stomp mes afgesny word! I had to re apply twice before the end at Mckenzie's club. Needles to say I reverted back to my trusted Squirt and despite a few water crossings in the valley on day 2 chain remained silent. I don't get the wax buildup that some people complain when using Squirt, but then I only apply to a clean chain when it is removed from the bike and lying flat on a table. I apply the Squirt to the rollers and work the chain between my fingers so that it can penetrate, then wipe of the excess.
  14. How big do you want? They have got 25l and 210l. Not on their website you have got to phone or mail them.
  15. Long overdue my friend welcome Back!
  16. No denying that he is a machine, but the argus is just to flat. He would be outsprinted.
  17. The term dehydration implies water loss, but isn't it more the electrolyte loss that needs to be addressed?
  18. The time I was there, they treated lots of cuts, bruises and disengagements of joints but none had been put on a drip. Anyway the original post implied that there should be a connection between Noaks diet and being put on drip (for what ever reason). I just don't get it.
  19. Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but for what other reason than dehydration would a doc at a race medical tent put you on a drip?
  20. I hope the ref gave a penalty! He showed some daylight, then went for the ball but alas he could not support his own bodyweight.
  21. I don't get it. Not sure that there is any connection to be drawn between LCHF and dehydration? What day was this? I was also in the medic tent on day 2 of the race. My partner dehydrated badly (not on LCHF). I asked the doctor about the amount of dehydration patients this year and he said it was much less than previous years. My partner was on a drip from about 15h00 to 18h00 and during that time he was the only oke being treated for dehydration.
  22. Lots of LCHF options at Sani this year!
  23. Kan nie meer nie korporaal! Kan nie meer wag nie?
  24. Doing the race, unfortunately, would have been nice to meet up with you guys...
  25. http://www.parktool.com/product/derailleur-hanger-alignment-gauge-dag-2Simple looking tool but does the job brilliantly.
