  1. Would be a terrible disappointment if someone is plundering this gem. There was rumours about, some time ago, that the local Department of Agriculture and Conservation was contemplating scrapping its status as a Nature Reserve. Lets hope that the fact that you are seeing less animals than usual is due to the higher vegetation, and / or, the antelope migrating to the lower, predominantly sweeter veld during the summer rainfall period.
  2. Beginning of February seems to be a common problem period for most of us. Also up ,5 kg from my lowest of 98.5 kg on 7 February. Social engagements this weekend, missing my longer Saturday ride must have played a part. My goal of 94 kg at the end of February seems to be slipping away. Time to buckle down and focus!!!
  3. Jcza's original post was tounge in the cheek. He is one of the most healthiest, leanest fittest old toppies on the hub! Not at all sure what he is doing stalking on the fat thread on the hub! Dit kan seker vertaal word as 'Die DIK draad op die wielnaaf'
  4. The low heart rate training, as prescribed by Dr Maffetone, is all about stimulating the aerobic system to reach its absolute maximum potential. Your sentiment, that you can't train that slow, is shared by most of his new clients, and it runs like a refrain through his book on endurance training and racing. What happens after weeks of training at this low heart rate is that the pace picks up while the heart rate remains in the aerobic zone. Like I stated in a previous post, I haven't done any structured training for an extended period of time. My recent attempts at returning to a fitter and healthier me failed due to injuries and or sickness as I tried to reach my previous levels to fast. My stress levels in my business is currently at a very high point. I have found in the past that frequent anaerobic training sessions added more stress. I enjoy the simplicity that my current low impact training regimen lends to my life. Furthermore I find it quite difficult to raise my heart rate to anaerobic levels if my carb intake is as low as it currently is. Anaerobic metabolism requires glycogen to produce power in muscles. Very low carb intake leads to low levels of glycogen in the liver and muscles. I except that low intensity training is not for everyone. If ones aerobic engine is developed to its max, I suppose there's not a lot to be gained by training slow. For me, at the moment, I feel I have a lot to gain. It is one long experiment on myself, and I wil be more than happy to report back, at regular intervals, about the success (or failure) of my attemt.
  5. To lose weight effectively it is of prime importance to teach your body to primarily burn fat and not carbs. This is done by cutting carbs from the diet, well at least all refined and processed stuff, and engaging in aerobic activities like cycling, running or swimming in your aerobic zone. Eat whole foods, cut out all sugar and processed stuff, limit fruit intake to 1 or 2 portions a day, make sure your workouts is aerobic, and the fat should melt steadily away. http://livehealthy.chron.com/train-body-use-fat-fuel-running-9192.html
  6. Ok, long story, I was a decent mtber finishing in the top third of the field at one day and 3 day events like Sani and berg and bush. June 2015 I had a very bad fall off a vandalised bridge on our local trail. I landed straight on the top of my head from a height of nearly 2m. Thanks to my giro helmet I escaped concussion but, according to the neurosurgeon I came very close to breaking my neck. Two herniated discs meant that I was off the bike for 4 months. When I started my journey back I decided to follow a low impact training regime. I did some research and stumbled upon the Maffetone concept of training and nutrition. I started on the Maffetone training and eating plan early 2016. Due to things happening with me and my family during this time (it was the worst drought in 100 years in our part of the freestate, I went nearly bankrupt and lost almost half of my land and all my 25 year savings, my son developed a life threatening depression) I fell into a depression of my own and completely stopped cycling and fell into very bad habits for 2 years. Gained 20 kg and nearly became an alcoholic. I will be following Maffetone for as long as I keep on losing weight and gaining on my maximum aerobic function test. I suspect it will be at least 6 months. Mountain biking friend of mine started Maffetone 7 months ago. He is or was never overweight, but he started on it because he suffered from overtraining syndrome. His MAF test improved from 140 watt to 230 watt in the 7 month period. He is on a kind of a plateau at the moment, not making significant gains. Dr Maffetone suggests that if this happens you should go on a short period, 3 to 4 weeks, of anaerobic training. This should help you break through the ceiling and start on a new upward curve on the MAF test.
  7. With the exception of a few casual rides, very few and far between, I haven't turned a pedal in almost 30 months. So for all practical purposes I am a beginner. I try to do an hour session on the MTB or indoor trainer 3 to 4 times during the week. Saturday 2 hours, sunday hour to hour and a half. Heart rate is kept at 180 minus my age, thus 126 bpm. This is supposed to stimulate the aerobic system. Think capillaries, mitochondrial action, slow twitch muscle development, fat burning instead of carb burning, etc.
  8. The older one gets, the harder it is supposed to lose weight, due to slower metabolism, age related muscle mass loss, reduced hormone function ie testosterone and HGH. At the wrong side of 50 I am very pleasantly suprised to have dropped, on average, 250g per day during January. I know the rate will get slower and slower closer to the target weight, but still what a pleasant suprise. I can attribute it to religiously cutting out all refined carbs, almost all alcohol ( only 2 occasions during Jan, white wine or cognac). I also followed the Maffetone style of low intensity training very strictly, keeping my heart rate in my Maffetone range.
  9. Well done everyone! Some real impressive losses so far! Can someone please update my entry, can't seem to update from my, rather old, ipad. Down to 99.6 kg this morning. Very happy to be back in double digits for first time in 13 months! Lost excactly 8 kg in 31 days. I made my goal of below hundred at the end of January on the last day. My goal for end of February is 94 kg. Good luck for February everyone!
  10. I am really sorry, I thought the word Maffetone is common knowledge for anyone with an interest in endurance training. Dr Phil Maffetone is a medical doctor with a lifelong interest in endurance training and optimal nutrition. He is probably one of the worlds most famous coaches of runners, cyclists and tri-athlon athletes. One of his most famous 'patients' is Mark Allen who he coached and trained to 6 Hawaii Kona Ironman wins. That after Mark was on the verge of quitting the sport due to constant overtraining and chronic inflammation. If anyone is interested in staying healthy and fit, not only now as a young person, but well into the sixties, seventies and beyond I suggest googling the words Dr Phil Maffetone, or 'the Maffetone method'. The most important thing for me about Maffetone is that he teaches you a training method that is sustainable for years and years, and yet you can expect to improve continuously, with very low risk of injury or getting sick. The other thing which is most important for all of us on this thread, is that he teaches you how to teach your body, by means of diet and training to become a fat burning machine, and not a carb burning machine. One of his latest books, The big book of endurance training and racing, is according to me one of his best to buy as it is very thorough and complete. It is also available as an e book. https://philmaffetone.com/what-is-maf/
  11. Anyone else on this thread doing Maffetone style training and or eating at this moment?
  12. Question for Myles again please. Can something like the Apple watch benefit and the shoe booster or flight booster be running at the same time from the same fitness points of a vitality member? Thanks.
  13. Search on youtube for Bikejames, or James Wilson. Some seriously good videos and tips for body weight training and MTB specific exercises. Here is his video on the basic deadlift for mountain biking. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ecroFuEOkrM
  14. WOW!!! Care to share some or all of your secrets? How much do you have to lose in total?
  15. Body weight exercises. Not to be scoffed at. There are some very challenging exercises to be googled. If you feel you must hit the gym, stay away from machines. They tend to target a single muscle or a small group of muscles. Easier to bulk up that way. Use free weights instead. When used correctly you wil target a whole lot more muscles at the same time. To do it safely and correctly you are forced to engage your core before each repetition. Think different kinds of deadlifts and squats. As an added bonus, it will do absolue wonders for your ballance on the mtb trails.
  16. The word spookasem is also used in Afrikaans for Quickstart in aerosol cans. Useful in starting hard to start petrol and diesel utility engines like found in lawn mowers, chainsaws, water pumps exectra.
  17. Thank you! I started making them as wedding, Christmas, and birthday gifts for family and special friends only. Soon started getting a lot of requests to sell some. I do sell them now, but on a limited scale. I am a farmer by profession, and if and when I get some time away from the farm activities and cycling I love to turn some grinders out on the lathe. Excuse the pun! Depending on the size, the type of wood, the difficulty of the design, whether it is a matching set or not, or a single mill I sell them from R450.00 for a single small ( about 180 mm tall) Kiaat mill to R1600.00 for a set of large (300 mm) Leadwood or American Walnut
  18. Rhodesian teak rolling pin and endgrain cutting board and American ash coffee grinder.
