  1. A good tip. I run and ride a bit and fish ect, before going out just spray your shoes and peek cap with a bit of insect spray or top of helmet. You never see a bee or fly again.
  2. Watch out for bikes from the Uk, USA and Indonesia from unknown suppliers. Especially when they are about 45% less than retail in SA. You will get - Nothing back You will be lead to to BELIVE you dealing with reputable supplier Don't be fooled.
  3. I will try and help as its still a dilemma for me to. 1) are on what type of riding you will be doing. a)Down hill - flat no clip b)trail but hard core technical to - mallet with cleat I ride with crank brothers mallets , not sexy but best of both worlds. e) trail / XC full cleat. This depends on your rides and skill and age, as if you fall on DH tech section with rocks it's sore, full clips stop you from dabbing foot down. Look at peddles that are common, Shimano ,crank brothers and the time ones. I could not get my foot out of Shimmano peddles even with tension on the lowest setting. Good luck
  4. Thanks for info. I am good for 75km MTB and after that could have done another 70km. BUt Saturday was different. I will also have some food with me next time. I suspect it has been my hard core training on my body, no rest from last week Saterday, training every day except Friday .Nearly six days in a row. My legs were tired to begin with but Sunday 94.7 wil be acid test. I am resting till Thursday and will do a light spinning class with a 20 lap swim.
  5. I posted this on another forum but think there may be some good wisdom from hear to so hear goes - Can some one tell me if I had a food bonk on a over training bonk or both. I had some berries, granola and pronutro with honey and skim milk.- my usual. Never had any issues on this Went for a fairly hard MTB ride at 30 km commented to my bike partner how easy the hills that used to kill us seemed to disappear. My hear rate was low and on some inclines went up a bit. Nothing wrong After doing a steep incline for about 7 km , my hear rate peeked at 105% for some time we then had a long ride back in the middy heat about 31'c We ran out of water and found a tap to rehydrate.it was hot After 39 km my hear rate was low, it would not move up much and when it did it was with great exertion. BUT I felt like death , proper drop tired. My legs were like jelly and I felt like I was going to drop. I managed to get back to the restaurant 50km and had to lie down and have a coke. Symptoms Weak, real weak !! Pale Sweaty ,clammy skin Migraine Sore back of neck- was hard tech ride. Took us about five hours in sadel so pace was slow Only had a gel Had one bottle of energy powder with cretin. Drank about 1,8 liters water. age 48 My hear is good My Polar which I don't trust to much, notes me as elite fit!!! Lol . Had a coke and a few sips of recovery drink , one hour later was fine but very tired. A bit stiff. What went wrong , I never felt like this and have done much harder rides and races !! Actually it has put me of riding for a while and I got my fist 94.7 next week- Eeek! I done some mtb 40 and mtb 50 km races and night races and had good times. Most I ever ridden is 73 km MTB at Northans, it was a easy. I have been training very hard , with gym, swimming and spinning and rode last weekend about 58 km -Mtb . Only had rest day Friday. My polar notes a five to six day rest period now. Edited by Forthefun, Today, 22:29.

  7. STAY AWAY FROM LOANS, BANKS AND FINCE HOUSES THEY MAKE YOU POOR AND THEY WILL RUIN YOU WITH INTREST. They lure you in first a bike then a washing machines and then a swanky car. I think you a lot younger than me and I can tell you all my friends who opted for loans are no where today. I opted for mostly payment upfront - made a world of difference ride a cheep bike and train hard. Unless you in the TOP TEN - repeat top 10 rather train harder and save you money and have a debit free life!!!
  8. Can any one tell me if we can ride the trial from last weekend the 40 or 70 km on the weekend. Is there a entrance ,parking. We really like Van Gaalens, but a new place would be nice. We did not ride race but like the area Would it be safe? Thank you.
  9. Try the Jeep pram , the jogger with some simple modifications. Best place to go is Rietvlei in Alberton (not Pretoria). Has great tracks /trails easy to jog in through forest and a small farm and bird zoo. Plus breakfast is good as small restaurant. Great bike store too! Jog slowly. If you have a kids bike rack where kids are on back , note the bike becomes very unstable and on dismounting can fall over!! Be unusually cautions on sand roads, bends and bumps.
  10. It been good to pepper spray him , and find out how he knows your place and what information prompted him to try his luck. Most times it's insider info. Good you unharmed, note stats show they come back!!
  11. Vince the butcher sent me some STF , Single track fuel -powder to try after the USN stuff nearly wiped me out! I am telling you, his approach is very different to what's got flash packing and even flashier pricing. The stuff works for me and I will say try it before you become a victim of false box label promises and fall pray to clever marketing , where the supplier makes 100% and retailer markes up 50% leaving 1/4 for cost of the powder and bottle- the powder will always be lower grade than you like to believe after paying so much its hard to swollow - no pun intended. I am not advertising, but if it worked compared to the rubbish I tried including USN -credit is due!, but he's some where on the hub. Got itvince@singletrackfuel.com
  12. I started with out cleats, them after about year went on to cleats - but opted for crank brothers mallets. It's give me reasonable grip when going over silly sized rocks un - cleated. on flats and flat up hills I do click in for power. But when I ride flat shoes with out cleats my aggression and is up 100% and I do much more and take many more chances over anything. I would like to go flat, no cleats one day after my long three days rides is out my system. I do feel a bit of pressure to cleat up" still working it out what's best for me.
  13. Don't be fooled by the cost of the glasses. As long as they good and have a good brand behind them and are fully certified uv filtering. It's not how much they cost, but what thay do. I am learning a lot about what works and what's hype, in MTB ing like any sport - you have to get involved train and decifer the truth from marketing. Some of the best engerygy powder I ever taken was from a chap though the post. More value for money than at retail.
  14. Any one know about Rock Ron's EVO for the front.
  15. Hay I tried new glasses with a light blue lens. Much better. I think it's important to try a few lenses.
  16. Greetings. I need some good advice. I using Racing Ralph snake skin on my back and I been told to use a rocket Ron on the front. I was wanting to use a Racing Ralph Evo. Can any one give me some input please.
  17. Hay the Axis components are also tops for the price.
  18. Trek is a solid choice , they spend many millions on research. It's strong and reliable. If you had to ride each, it would be a easy choice.
  19. Found in the thread info on chains , but need info on light light weight chains please
  20. I have a ten speed Shimano chain what is a very light weight chain I can use ? I think my chain is showing signs of wear. If any one can advice on type pf chain and how to look for wear. Thanks
  21. Thanks for info. I have tried the red lenze, it seems to make everything strange colours. For me it inhances the red and orange from the sun. I am going to try darker tints and lighter. I am also going to have a good eye test. It be hard to accept the need for lenses. I also plan to wear a peek cap that will inhance my front face shade. This could do the trick. I think helmuts for South Africa should have a longer sun visor. It's hot in Africa. Most of these helmets are designed in Eu and some in the USA.
  22. New to races, only thing turning a team of us off, is the silly fees for tags, licenses day passes. The entry fees are also steep. But the money frills only goes to show cycling in SA needs to be cleaned up and streamlined. My wisdome tells me two things ,keep government out - but have proper regulation in place.
  23. Anyone tell me on long rides of 50-75 km MTB if you get sore tired eyes? I have the top range Rudy project sun glasess that change to tinted when your in sun and have a shiny silver tint on the outer side - but my eyes are sore. What about Poloroid ,darker tints any proper advice will be appreciated. Thank you
