  1. New Year's day ride on the farm:
  2. Very close!! It's between Middelburg and Noupoort. About 120km from Graaff Reinet. Very similar terrain that you will find in the GR area.
  3. Did a nice trail run on the farm with Brodie and Dakota this morning:
  4. Training ride on the farm:
  5. It is an awesome event, I did the monster in 2007 and 2008, would love to ride this event again.
  6. Local roaster is the only way. Failing that, get from an out of town roaster every two weeks and courier. Don't get me started on supermarket coffee. We have friends who buy ground Illy espresso from Checkers at R95 for a 250g container, claiming that it is better than anything else. Same people moer 2 spoons of sugar into their coffee (they have to because it tastes terrible). The effect of perceived value is big for some people. They think because of the name it is the best, irrespective of the methods used to prepare it.
  7. So my local roaster, Masteron's Coffee Roasters turned 90 today. Awesome achievement in my books, and I will remain a very loyal customer:
  8. The problem with pod/capsule machines is that the coffee inside the pods is stale by the time you use it. Not even the best quality coffee and the best espresso machine in the world can make up for the loss of flavour when coffee goes stale.
  9. Emerald Pool, Longmore Forest:
  10. Longmore Forest, 55km with 1600m climbing.
  11. Yip, I can find my balance point for about 3 seconds and then I lose it. But I am getting better, thanks to riding more with flats. When you are cleated you tend to chicken out and grab brakes before you are comfortably at the balance point.
  12. Haha, no not exactly. We were on the farm, and late the Sunday afternoon I went for a play session on my way to tighten one of the windpumps. There is a very old kraal on the way back, which is built with rocks, and it has nice and wide walls. So I did a few sets of riding on the wall and dropping off the wall onto the side of an erosion ditch which is great fun. However I just before heading home, I thought, let me do one more, a little faster, but I overshot the landing slightly and my right foot slipped off the pedal, and the pedal attacked my shin. Worst is, my knee/shin guards were at home.
  13. Trail running is not for sissies, they did a 5km trail run with me today, their longest run before this was 3km. Looking tired:
  14. That's cute. Here is mine from about 18 months ago, before I discovered the awesome world of Five Ten:
  15. You got very lucky. From what I understand, the Olympia Cremina is in a class of its own when it comes to manual levers with pressurized boiler. It does not have the temperature related issues that LP Europiccola users experience when pulling multiple shots. Is you La Pavoni the Europiccola or the Professional?
  16. It is manual lever machine, the barista operates a lever which moves a piston via a linkage system. The piston draws water from the boiler as it lifts, and as the lever is pulled down the the piston acting on the column of water water will cause water to flow through the puck. You also get spring lever machines such as the Elektra Micro Casa, Londinium I and Bezera Strega. With these spring lever machines you pull the lever down to lift the piston, and after releasing the lever a spring drives the piston down to get the water flowing through the puck. I also use a manual lever machine, with an open boiler. Took this photo halfway through the pull.
  17. I am pretty sure that is Tianmen Pass.
  18. Cedric Gracia on Enduro: flowmountainbike.com/features/cedric-gracia-the-funniest-bugger-in-mountain-biking/ This pretty much lines up with what all trail/all mountain riders have been doing for years. But it is cool that there is a specific racing discipline now, because it speeds up the development of better faster and more reliable products.
  19. You also need to make Braaaap sounds when you ride that line.
  20. This an interesting test and the results will surprise most. I am just a little irritated that they did not use proper flat pedal shoes.
  21. I have to say, I really think that Five Tens are awesome. I do most of my trail riding and training on Saint flat pedals with 510 Freeride VXi. I only use spd's for races. Fit them 3 weeks before an event, and change back to flats after the race. In my opinion my technique over technical trail obstacles have improved a lot since using flat pedals in my training and trail riding.
  22. When I see hardtails like that one, it makes me wonder why I still ride a full suspension. A good long travel hardtail is an awesome compromise between efficiency, capability and simplicity.
  23. I see what you mean: http://fthumb0.mtb-news.de/cache/950/auto/1/1/fstatic2.mtb-news.de/f/1y/cd/1ycdc1x6zj2q/large_IBIS_Hausbesuch_by_Jens_Staudt-9433.jpg
