  1. If my calculation is correct (possibly debatable) then that equates to R1500 per year if you were to drive 20,000km. Mine stay on for the convenience factor over a Securi-Lid on a bakkie so I suspect they will have a smaller impact being behind the cab.
  2. Will probably be available on the classifieds in "as new" condition soon! Very lucky guy!
  3. WTB Kom Tough I29 is the first rim I haven't been able to damage (badly) yet. They also look really good IMO. I've heard very good things about the DT Swiss rims but I seem to remember they come at a premium price (there wasn't any stock when I got the WTB's built last year). As far as the discussion is concerned, both will work but I suspect 30mm might just be that little bit too wide for your intentions so I'd go with 25mm personally for XC use if those are the only options. ...and the OP resolved his dilemma while I typed this
  4. I know but surely there must be one bike left out there!
  5. Where are the wholesalers/retailers in all of this? Surely there is someone with a small 29er looking for a home that they can pass on at cost. The PR value will be huge and it shouldn't cost a cent - I'm sure we can get News24 to write a feel good article about it.
  6. I know you're joking but I'd suggest looking at a cheaper bike with insurance... No point in a fancy bike that might make him a target and could disappear again. Even if he uses the money he was putting towards the debt to pay for the insurance.
  7. Now to make sure the bike shop does their bit and passes everything on at their cost
  8. Thanks for running with this! Contribution made. I really hope he ends up with a nice new bike. If Linden Cycles have the connections and if there's enough money, maybe they can assist with a year of insurance and maintenance as well. That's just a suggestion if the option is available.
  9. Your source of information is clearly Advocate Google - be careful of that... If you sell a product to someone then you have an obligation to them - whether that is moral or legal should be irrelevant if you are a half decent person. You don't appear to be interested in the former and that says something about you hence the suggestion you should walk away quietly. In this case the buyer has effectively admitted there were problems with the bike he sold (whether it is the FD, RD or crank or all 3 is once again irrelevant) - as far as I can make out he has NOT rectified those problems. He has claimed he will do so under a very specific set of conditions thus making it as inconvenient as possible for the buyer. Would the buyer "win" if this went to court - I don't know for sure but I think he would as the seller should reasonably have known about the issues identified (length of crank and crack in derailleur). It would however be a painful process for both parties. Is the damage to the seller's reputation worth it - only he can decide. In another post you mention he paid the money into someone else's account and can't even prove who he bought it from. Either I've missed something in this thread or you know more about this transaction than you're letting on...
  10. Why do you apologise for upsetting people and then just keep heading down the rabbit hole? What do Shimano warranties, insurance, Bike Hub Pay etc have to do with anything? Sometimes it's alright to be wrong and to just walk away... At the very least, thanks for the entertainment your "arguments" have brought to this thread. It would have died off days ago if it wasn't for you. Just for some context, what is your interest in all of this?
  11. I take it you just enjoy causing trouble? I don't know either party in this but your posts make no sense at all.
  12. I'm not sure if you're trying to be serious or not? If you sell something cheaply then you can lie about it? Would you check the crank length on a bike the second it arrives? Cracked handle bar? The OP needs to name and shame the person as publicly as possible - the damage to their reputation hopefully does much more damage than fixing the faults would have. If you can afford the legal route then do that just for fun - it will bankrupt the seller very quickly and make him regret his "speak to my lawyer" nonsense.
  13. I recommend these - https://firstbikeafrica.co.za/collections/firstbike-with-brakes My son is on the "fatbike" version and those tyres make such a difference when he leaves the tar. Not the cheapest but we're nearly 1 year in and it still looks like new - will ultimately go to the second when he gets to that stage.
  14. Coincidentally I ordered some this morning and just received notification they have been shipped so should know soon. Just took a chance with ordering them.
  15. I need one if it's in the next few days
  16. Training Camps - is that the single track climb from the bottom gate up? Probably going from the top of Supertubes off to the right? I remember doing that a few years ago there and can't think of anything else it might be. Stage 5 will be a serious test of fitness - probably 7 mins+ for many people - but it's an awesome trail
  17. Love the cellphones in the pics - sure the police could have some fun visiting that seller.
  18. Even if I don't respond I am reading all the replies - just interested to see if there ends up being a common thread. Maxxis appear to have little to no stock of almost any lines currently in the common 29" sizes so unfortunately I probably need to look at other brands (unless you can also point me towards specific stores with stock)
  19. I'm busy building a new 130/115mm trail bike My original aim was to get Maxxis DHF/DHR combo in 29x2.3" but there appears to be a severe shortage currently in SA (I have the WT versions of these on my enduro bike and they're great but a bit slow) I'm more interested in grip and puncture prevention but also don't want anything TOO slow as the bike will occasionally do 50+km rides hence not looking at the wide trail versions of the above. Does anyone have any other suggestions for good tyre combo's which are available currently?
  20. Go with the Stans - that's the normal retail price of the Hope Pro 4 hubs (which are rock solid) so you're getting rims, spokes and build almost for free. If you can, try and persuade them to build them with better spokes even if it costs you a little more as I suspect they use entry level, heavy spokes (I could be wrong)
  21. Guessing you weren't meant to notice that
  22. I recently inherited a set of tools probably from the '30s/40's - Stanley Bailey plane; 2 Henry Disston saws; Marples chisels; levels/squares/hand drills/scrapers etc. Most of that is relatively meaningless to me but I've consulted with Dr Google on a lot of it and none of it is hugely fancy but all pretty good stuff. Is there someone you could recommend in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town I could take it to for some more info on it and possibly help with restoring the tools to full working condition (all in very good condition but edges are a bit dull mainly)? ...sadly I don't have the time, patience or skill to restore them myself
  23. When it comes to insurance, everyone is clambering for their money so there is always a conflict (insurers don't ask for discounts and are often even willing to pay a premium as they work through assessors who are also conflicted). It's a very messy industry... In this case you probably don't have any legal claim but get them to confirm in writing that if the frame is not restored to it's original condition after the repair then they must replace it. If it is restored to original condition by an "expert" then there isn't much to argue. Alternatively take the cash cost of the repair and pay in to buy a new frame.
  24. Thanks for the response... Just to clarify - I'm not knocking anything, you guys put on an awesome series of events and I will definitely be back again next year. If my response is not taken as intended as some constructive criticism/feedback from a regular rider then I guess I have to apologise. People seem to be very insulted and defensive about it. I have made it clear I am not qualified on any of this stuff but it just "feels" like there might be a better alternative out there at a reasonable price (I'm perfectly happy to be wrong about this!). You guys should be taking some money home for carrying the effort/risk of organising it so that is a separate problem.
