  1. It's amazing how may people leave that Epic sticker on their top tube for months after the event.

At a schools xc race last year a junior girl came past where I was watching on a Yeti DS with 3 perfectly preserved Epic stickers on the top tube. Obviously a hand - me - down bike from a parent.

If only we had the technology to make other products as durable as these stickers.

  2. I use one of these Magiclight MJ818's: http://www.magicligh...ke-lights/mj818

    Super bright!

    +1000 -

Rear facing - we have the same light on our seatpost - motorists often comment on how bright it is. And we have the red Blackburn flea light mounted on the back of our helmets. Plus we wear hi- vis vests

Front facing - On handlebars we have a magiclight ( Claimed 900lumens) and white Blackburn flea light on our helmets.

  3. Left - back

    Right - front

When I started cycling I thought that the back brake should be on my stronger hand ( I am left handed) and they have stayed like this ever since.

However I think that a commuter bike in SA should be set up with left - front and right - rear. My reasoning is that if you hit a car's mirror your brake may be activated. If it is the front brake you could go "endo". BTW - this happened to me a few months ago. Luckily I ended up on the pavement and not under the car.

  4. In 2008 I got a viral infection two days before the race started but thought I could ride it off as my partner was aiming for her 3rd finish.

I struggled through the prologue and 3 stages just making the cutoff by a few minutes each day. On the 4th stage I missed the cutoff by 15 minutes and decided to stop.

I was more shattered at letting my partner down than my own suffering as she was in fantastic shape and could have finished easily.

  5. They seem to be falling further behind every day if you compare to other teams on geared bikes that generally seem to finish in more or less the same position in the field every stage. The longer stages hurts them more than the other guys due to spinning out.

What an achievement it will ge if they can finish!!

    Has it been done before?

One of our friends did the Freedom Challenge on a rigid singlespeed.

  6. Never mind the graveyard, the section just after that is totally dark and deserted. I had a horse neigh near me in the dark somewhere and I nearly had to stop for a change of pant....

Similar experience - except grey horse stepped out from behind a bush next to graveyard on one of my night laps.

  7.

I reckon its worth the 200 zars, but that is if I didn't have pvr. If my wife ever wipe it to make place for that stupid kardasian k@k, a divorce will be on its way

My wife took no chances. She brought the DVD home before it was shown on TV.

  8. I decided to try out the concept of having a bike at either end of my Gautrain journey so I brought my spare SS back from Cape Town and bought two D bolt locks from CRC.

The locks come with a mounting bracket but the locks are too big to carry inside the frame or behind the seat.

So after a week of pondering the issue I decided to mount the bracket on the front fork. This bike does the Rhodesfield to work run which is only 5kms and all on tar.

I tried it out yesterday and it worked well.

  9. Also watched it thought it was brilliant! Always knew they were very serious didnt know that serious though.

I realized again that to win and be competitive at that level you have to eat, drink and sleep cycling like them.

Excellent to see how their different strenghts helped each other.

A race fit Kevin lost another 4kg's with David's help!!! And the SRM on their bikes confirmation again how crucial it is at that level.

Well done guys and good luck with the Epic !

A couple of years ago we went to a race in Hazyview and stayed in the same hotel as Kevin and David.

It was the quite an eye opener ( and funny) to see them sharing a normal person's sized meal. They even shared a small (250ml bottle of wine). But I guess their results prove the benefits of such a training regime.

I hope that this is their year.

  10. Jozi commuters I thinking of commuting, but will have to commute from Harties to Braamfontein. It's far yes. Do you know of a place where one can leave the car that is possibly half way and cycle the rest. Any ideas, suggestion would be great

    Northgate Shopping Centre?

  11. Randburg Mall Taxi Rank - food court

Not as glamorous as the rest of the photos but it was an unusual setting for me to find myself in.

On my way home yesterday afternoon I stopped in at the Vehicle Licencing Department in Randburg to renew my driver's licence. The whole process took all of 10 minutes  so I decided to buy myself a coke before heading home.

The taxi rank is right next door so I bought a coke and sat down and watched the people going home.

  13. Today & yesterday

Brings back good and bad memories. In the mid 80s a cyclone pushed 6m swells on Durban beaches. I managed to get out to backline on my waveski and then spent nearly two hours trying to get back to shore without killing myself.

  14. My wife's 1st reaction to the news that I entered both of us in this event was " What are we going to wear?" Judging from previous SSWC events this is not a frivolous question and one that causes as much anxiety as the ratio of the sprocket to the chainring.

  15.

A bit off topic, but how long after Epic do you start riding again? My wife is bugging me to enter a few races after Epic, but i'm not too sure how soon i'll be up for it. I already gave her my Sani entry in lieu of me doing Epic, which I am a little sad about...

In 2005 I did a race the following weekend - but my legs were very sore and I was mentally jaded

In 2008 I was ill and abandoned the race after day 5. I could not face riding for about 6 months.

After last year's Jhb2C I took two weeks off and then did Magalies Monster with no problems

My experience is the better your Epic the sooner you want to start riding again
