  1. Seems like a proper scam... Bur from that "boxes getting packed and on their way soon" shot on facebook, they only have 8 subs.... 1500 bucks towards bike stuff i actually want is way better than some spray painted box of ***.
  2. Seattube still. Its a much stronger component than a top tube - the issue has always been that the top tube is generally oversized and weirdly shaped, so easy to crush in standard clamps. Add to the thinner walls due to the chase for light weight and comoliance, the top tube is far more sensitive to compression forces than a Seatpost, which are built to take a lot of weight and force for their smaller size. Worst case, slot in an alu Seatpost if you have a round clamp for it. Aero ones, the seattube will be the safer bet than the top tube.
  3. Sawtooths may look smooth but they're quite amazing offroad and brilliant on it. Specilaized Stellenbosch has stock of the 42c, didnt look for others while i was there... But they're quite multi surface tyres, despite their initial looks
  4. Before we break this down - its an amazing initiative anyway... But they're basically subsidising the donation. Margins probably around 40-60%, so in donating 300k they're still donating a proper whack. And if you can give something back to people and get more people to have some S equipment, it's a win allround....
  5. Are there really no shops or brands that want to get involved here? Would be well worth the PR in exchange for a reasonable discount....
  6. Was amazing to see the response teams sorting out tje fires that flared up on helshoogte while we rode over it... Those fire choppers were amazing, even in the wind... Holding thumbs this gets under control asap...
  7. Anyone have some real world feedback on the redshift products? Really interested in a stem and Seatpost combo, but the Seatpost is heavy and i am leaning towards just the stem... Finding the only hairy times on the gravel are descents and im out the saddle for those anyway...
  8. Not particularly flush at the moment but 300 bucks is on its way....
  9. So lemme jump in on this... Having been involved with the industrial cleaning chemical industry for the last decade. There is a difference between neutral PH, and neutral chemical. Unfortunately, even chemical companies dont properly use this is marketing materials, hell, even reps who are seasoned get this wrong. Neutral pH is neutral pH. Distilled water. No worries. What we are concerned with is neutral chemical. That means, if the surface you're cleaning wont be harmed by water, then it wont be harmed by the product. However, even if its classed as neutral, it doesn't mean it can't do other damage unintentionally. A neutral degreaser is still a degreaser. So it will remove grease but not damage the surface youre cleaning. On a stove? Amazing. On a bike? Well, unless you can rinse it off quickly and completely, it'll break down the grease in bearings. May be quick, may be over time. But it'll do it. The salt in dishwasher is correct. However, its mostly paint damage you're worried about as the salt will attack the clear coat. Underdiluted, it may take a LOT longer, but when you're chucking 50ml into 500ml water, you're asking for trouble. Then we have to ask the question - why do you need ANYTHING in the wash liquor? Your bike will have picked up dust, dirt, and mud. Technically, the only thing a degreaser will do is move the dust faster, but it wont make a difference to the end result. Best thing to do its wash the bike with clean water. Treat nicks and scratches with a spot polish. Greasy parts, ideally, are bettee cleaned by removing and wiping them clean with a rag. If you're not using chemistry, you're not stripping the grease each wash so relubing will have much longer intervals with better peace of mind. A polish or paint finish is fine to make it shine. But really, you dont need to wash with soap! Take it, leave it, do what you want. But just cause one application requires soap, doesn't mean it applies to everything.
  10. Every year the industry shows us a new study that even wider is even better... Im running 30mm id rims with 2.35 front and 2.25 back, and they're absolutely awesome. Planning to go a little narrower on the rear for mud clearance, but honestly no wierd feelings, only planted, solid, fantastic riding experience.
  11. Yeah that flare really feels incredibly controlled and comfortable... So much so I've toyed with the idea of putting them on the roadie... The hoods jaunty angle always seemed strange before i rode them, but somehow they actually feel more comfortable too....
  12. True that. But how loaded must you be that you dont inspect, or pay "the best mechanic in Johannesburg" to inspect and verify condition, after dropping sixty grand???
  13. Not really tho - you went from, okay replace the parts, to okay, i lost faith in the bike and refund me. Which is a big ask often - most people are selling a bike to finance a new one, and so cant float that 60k for weeks on end praying you'll not come back. Fair compensation is fair. Refund for one or two things out of joint isn't, at least not on the used market, inless its a glaringly obvious issue like a repaired frame or something else undisclosed... Anyway, good luck man. Enjoy riding your bike.
  14. After seeing the posts, i stick by my original statement. Youre both *** at this. At this point, with what we have in front of us, i feel like fair compensation for the crank, the FD, and half of the RD. Crank was a lie, which sucks, make it right. FD was broken before sale, not mentioned, pay up. RD - chain wizard can apparently be the "best in jhb", but he shouldn't have opened it. Paying half sounds fair but even then i think the buyer should take the whole hit for authorizing his mech for opening the RD up. That eas stupid. Anyway, hope you guys get this sorted. Nice to know i wont ever want to do business with either of you. Good luck!
  15. Yeah, this is the part that gets me the most... Hub ratings are great and all, but if im about to drop 60k, I'll spend another 2% of that on getting it looked at and vetted by an independent shop... Hope you get sorted out to your satisfaction OP, but i dont know if that exists, really..
  16. Look, the seller is dodgy, but i dont think you're squeaky clean in this either. Normally, you receive something that doesn't work as intended, you contact the seller and ask how he would like to proceed. This gives him the option to take it back and have a look himself, or send you to his trusted mech to take a look. You recieved the bike, found a fault, and took it to your own expert, who could have easily done more damage or created detrimental damage to a part that could have had a very small issue instead. You buy a car from a dealer, and if something goes wrong in those first 6 months, they handle the complaint, not your buddy down the road... The friend is there for advice, not for a botched repair... Again, both parties suck here, but i think you should have gone about all of this totally differently.
  17. Welcome to the club!!! Looks awesome man!
  18. I don't know if he still has some, but i bought a converter from SuperSywurm a while back...
  19. The marketing departments say yes.
  20. It doesnt up matter where the bike or you were located. You dropped 60k on an unseen bike and that wasn't smart, no matter how you slice this... Have you asked him the same questions re replacement parts? Hes the only one that could answer. I think you're within your rights to insist on like for like replacements, but you manage that with him. Good luck man. Hope it works out. Next time, maybe pay that teensy bit extra and have a local mechanic look over a bike you want to buy. Can't see a seller refusing, and its worth the money to have someone like Droo give you a green light.
  21. Dealer or not, its a used bike. You're expecting the service of a nee bike purchase, which is something you kinda write off in return for the discount of a used bike... I think he's doing the right thing by offering replacements on damaged parts. Id expect a car dealer to do the same. But to insist on a full refund for replacement parts is an issue. How does the internal mechanism get damaged from a crash? Anyway, i think you're making a much bigger fuss of this than you should be. You didnt inspect a bike you paid for, which was silly. If you're going to believe everyone's judgement of condition than i would suggest browsing the "comments on classifieds" thread and see the varying states of parts that are so often described as MINT. Put your toys back in the cot, get your best expert to inspect the rest of the bike and agree on replacement options. Then go ride your bike and feel better about the world.
  22. The only thing you'll be missing is closer gaps between gears (which doesn't matter as much as on the road), the top and bottom end gearing will be the same as any other speed. The other thing you'll miss out on is the ridiculous prices of 11spd gear... 8 speed stuff is super cheap, available in wide range of ratio choices, and reliable as hell. Go for it, you won't be missing anything tangible.
  23. Mr Horn, im not going to lie theyre not ideal. But i think we got it close enough to right. Wife (not riding) and i and another couple stayed in citrusdal Friday and Saturday nights. Wife dropped us off, and then dropped the other lady off (she did the 38km). Fetched us all at the end. They did have shuttle or drive your car there for you services, but i have no idea how that went.
