  1. And DH1 is finally open again. All the usual caveats - there have been one or two small changes and a new feature added and there are some dusty spots but should be fine when ridden in properly. The exit has been changed to line up better with the DH2 entry, the berm before the big drop has been moved to allow for better approach to the drop (B lines around there have been fixed and the landing has been changed a little - check first). There is a new jump and line into the big berm and all the landings through the central section of the trail have been fixed.
  2. One quick correction here - it's DH1 currently being worked on, no work on DH0 at the moment. That will likely get looked at after DH1 and Broken Road have had a bit more time put into them.
  3. Somehow missed this reply - as far as I know they are letting riders into all sections they could use before other than the link road (level 5) that leads down to Tokai. I wouldn't expect to see much in the way of repairs on Wapad any time soon, not based on any particular info just a hunch.
  4. And the latest news with access being restored to level 4 & 5 is the Cobra trail is now open for riding again. The trail is pretty much as it was before the closure, we had to clear quite a bit of debris on the track in and fix up one or two spots on the actual trail but otherwise all good. DH0 is still closed and will be looked at when we finish repairs on DH1. Hopefully DH1 will be ready to go within the next two weeks, I will update here as soon as we have a confirmed date for repairs to be completed.
  5. Opening again on Monday according to SANParks. You will be able to ride around Silvermine (not sure of the conditions because we haven't driven the full loop) just not down to Tokai.
  6. As you may have heard SANParks has decided to re-open levels 4 & 5 as from next Monday, this threw us a bit of a curveball and meant we had to head out that way to check damage levels and safety issues. There are a few spots on each level where you are likely going to have to walk for a few meters thanks to rockfalls, we have done just enough road building to allow us to get a vehicle past and will have to return later when time allows to sort the problems out properly. Our first drive around there took over four hours to complete, it was a bit of a mess. We did a basic sweep and clear on Broken Road but it is a good idea to take your time down there, at least the first time you ride it. Also be aware that there is a rockfall just after the exit so please slow down a little at the end. Both The Donkey Trail and the link up to Silvermine gate are going to remain closed for now due to rockfalls and safety concerns. So don't park in Silvermine and try and head down to Tokai, it's likely to go horribly wrong. The rockfall on the Silvermine gate link is particularly impressive and, me being me, I forgot to take a photo. So here's one of the Donkey Trail exit instead (And yes a whole lot of the trail looks like this) -
  7. We are looking at Cobra and the level 4 & 5 jeep tracks today so hopefully you get your wish on this one. It's either going to be Cobra or DH1. Yep the bees appear to have left when the fire arrived.
  8. The AM Trail was re-opened this afternoon. Entry is as per usual via the DH1 entry which has had a bit of a spruce up (DH1 still closed from the split with AM). The top section (the shared part with DH1) and just after the split are a little loose but will compact with use. The trail has been cleaned up and vegetation cut back and one or two of the features have been repaired and now you get a bonus stream crossing. The area after the stream crossing has had some additional rock lining and the exit has had quite a bit of repair work but is still pretty intimidating. Oh and those pesky bees have finally left the area.
  9. Fortunately for us that is on the side used primarily by the horse riders, if you thought the roads our side were bad they have real issues. The best part is we get told by botanists that our trails ruin the area, and yet they will ignore the state of the roads they have to drive up and damage in these pictures.
  10. Fairy Garden is finally open, bridge has been replaced and the upper exit has been repaired. Most of the trail remains 'as is' but watch out for one or two wet patches. One or two spots do need trimming and the steep corner needs a little work and these will be attended to in the next few weeks.
  11. Local management appear to have been able to chase up some emergency budget for road repairs this year with more to follow next year, whether this makes much difference remains to be seen.
  12. The Lizard trail is now open again, it's a little soft in places (lots of new soil in some spots) but should be okay after a few wheels have been down there. Not too much in the way of changes other than a little extra rock lining near the entrance in an area that was suffering a lot of water damage, a slight change to the first corner (slackened out a bit to allow for a bit more speed to be carried) and the mid trail step down is now made of rock because the log that was there previously burned. Also the exit track alongside the road kind of peters out about halfway down so watch out for that. Next on the to do list are Fairy Garden (find all the bits of bridge still missing and rebuild and then sort out the top exit) and DH1 (a lot of water damage on here, should be ready in the next two weeks if nothing goes horribly wrong).
  13. That's going to be quite a while I would guess, if ever. That jeep track is absolutely toast in large areas - over time we hope to add by pass sections to all the worst parts but it's going to be a longer term project.
  14. Sorry - we weren't too clear on that. Four & Five are closed in the direction of Silvermine. Mast route is open, it's a bit of a muddy slog once you pass Mamba until you get to the 'lookout corner' but same as ever after that. For what it's worth I would wait until it is a bit drier up there, it's doable now but I would hesitate to recommend it as 'fun'.
  15. Not here trust me. This lot bugger off up the mountain and are roundly ignored. We find, and report, all sorts of stuff where they work - littering, cigarette butts dumped out of car ashtrays, the poison they used left abandoned in open containers, oil cans dumped in water courses, all the slash dumped in water courses or next to the trail and more. One team were caught stealing a riders hydration pack (no action taken on that one, they were just allowed to continue working once the pack had been retrieved). Years of reporting has achieved nothing and even now some would have you believe that the MTB trails are the biggest problem on the mountain.
  16. Okay then, bit of a whoopsie today... Despite our multiple complaints SANParks alien clearing teams have been dumping logs and branches in multiple water courses over the last few years (their mandate is to move all slash a minimum of 20 meters away from any watercourse or trail), this was the reason both DH1 & Boulders flooded last year. Well today they hit the jackpot when the fast running water brought down enough of the debris to completely remove the Fairy Garden bridge. It wasn't so much damaged as lifted up and deposited further downstream. We have made our extreme displeasure known to SANParks and fully expect absolutely bugger all change in the contractors behaviour. So basically Fairy Garden will be closed for about a week for a complete bridge rebuild, I will update as soon as the bridge is back and I have gained at least some control of my temper.
  17. We are building a small single track section next to it as a by-pass, it's easier than trying to fix the road. Every day we go in after more rain that jeep track gets more 'interesting' especially on the levels above Vasbyt. It looks to me like SANParks and the companies that need access to the mast are trying to out wait each other in the hope the other party will finally crack and work on the road. On the plus side if we do enough of these by-pass sections the climb will be a bit more interesting.
  18. We watched a Hilux on its way up to the mast decide to give up completely on one section of road and basically go full off road because of a new trench in the road that had developed overnight. It is just the right size to swallow a vehicles front wheels and land it on its chassis.
  19. Not great to be honest but the trails are coping far better than the roads at the moment. We are busy with by-pass work for the worst parts of the road alongside working on the trails.
  20. The jeep track could be mistaken for a new DH track in places. It also offers many opportunities for a spa day mud bath. Have a feeling the next few days are not going to help much.
  21. That's the plan, assuming the level 4 jeep track doesn't get completely ruined and/or buried in mud. Should be fine though.
  22. Time for another quick update. So far trail repairs have been going quite well, well enough for Tokaimtb to put in a request for a partial opening of the area. The latest feedback from SANParks seems to, on the surface, be quite positive so hopefully we shouldn't have too long to wait for an answer. SANParks have asked for a map of the proposed opening area which we will supply by the end of the week. The current plan would be to open up all the Snake trails, The Switchbacks, DH2, 3, & 4, Vasbyt, My Roots, Your Roots and Fairy Garden while the remaining trails are worked on. Also hoping to have Lizard sorted - it was repaired but after the heavy rain all the surface soil on the slope above slid down onto the trail. The water management did quite well in protecting the trail from the worst of it but we do need to go back in there and sort it out again. We also have a bit of unexpected work to do on the roads after the rain last week, some parts are now fully fledged 4x4 trails (working on by-passes for the worst affected areas) and other parts are under thick soil after the unprotected areas above the roads decided it wanted to relocate. It's sort of okay when dry but becomes a bog when wet. I will update here as things progress.
  23. Checks name of thread and I see it is clearly - CLEARLY - called 'Tokaimtb Trails Closed until further notice'. Why on earth would people be zoning in on Tokai, it's a complete mystery.
  24. Rubbish, utter rubbish. All you do is make excuses for selfish individuals that simply don't care. How about today where if you went to Tokai you would find the gates closed, a sign explaining the area is closed and hazard tape across multiple trail entrances, exits and around areas that had been repaired. You know what we found when we went into Tokai to continue repairs? People had gone through the gate, past the unmissable sign and then proceeded to tear down all the tape closing off the trails and riding them. As far as damage goes, yes there was damage to the repaired sections of trail, but possibly more importantly there was other damage brought on by complaints to us by the horse riding community (riders in their section of the park) and SANParks having a chat with us about rider behaviour. The second one there is really important because we are lobbying for as early an opening as possible with the Snake trails, DH2, Lizard and all the trails below there being open for use and the remaining trails staying closed until they have been repaired. We are now being asked if this is viable because it appears that certain riders will simply ignore any closures. So thanks a lot to the self idiots that have just made getting Tokai open just that little bit more difficult. And precisely what sodding bubble do we have to step out of to get the message across to these sad twats?
