jedi, the Cyclehub at Rietvlei has rental MTB's. Go and pay R60 for 4 hours and ride in a safe environment and take it from there.

The only problem I have at cape Town circles is that drivers fail to indicate. Most times, if they indicated their intentions, I would have had momentum to carry me thru the circle without coming to a complete stop (yield).

Then the car waiting at the circle ONLY yields to the right and so on!! The UK is probably the best place to see this work properly. They call them 'Round Abouts'!

astana, according to reviews, Sram is the way to go. Once it's set, there is little tinkering to be done unlike Shimano. Contact kiwi. He has both X-9 & X-0 at excellent prices.
