  1. I have done that with a chisel handle I was making on my little midi lathe, its not something I recommend for anyone who is inexperienced. I still think your chuck advice is the best way to go!
  2. I think Corneel covered it nicely, you really need a chuck for most turning so its not a bad idea getting one sooner rather than later. I have one of these from Strand: https://www.strandhardware.co.za/4-jaw-self-centering-chuck-100mm Its great because it has all of the jaw kits, it should just be a case of getting a 3/4" to 1" adapter from mr woodturner for it. You can use a faceplate and glue block to do that kind of turning, its a pain to setup but can do the job just fine.
  3. Pfft they are so practical and awesome, I dont see what the problem is. Im going to dig out my moonbag from the 80's and wear it while cycling my bike with a saddle bag strapped to a saddle bag. The awesome level will be through the roof, the practicality level might just cause a rift in time.
  4. Im going to put a saddle bag back on my roadie and send you a pic. Viva saddle bags viva!!
  5. Yeah look nothing like that is a good idea, but there is also influence coming in from big tobacco who are losing money are a silly rate. The incidents that were referred to as "vape lung" we very specifically tied to Chinese THC oils that were being sold. The natural THC product is too thick to use so it was thinned down with vitamin E oil to lower the viscosity. Unfortunately its a really bad idea to heat and inhale that which lead to the problems. Normal vape juices contain vegetable glycerin(VG) propylene glycol(PG) nicotene(optional) and PG based flavours. VG is pretty much a base for most sweets like jelly babies etc. PG is used in a lot of medicines eg asthma pumps, cough mixtures etc. So really there is nothing inherently dangerous in the juices, what is a concern however is what effect high heat has on them. The guys you see billowing huge plumes of vapour are using 50W+ which is most likely a bad idea. TL;DR version is that anything which has a large established industry behind it that is losing money will have all manner of bias towards interference. There would be no difference if this was any other industry wanting to discredit something that is causing it to lose money.
  6. Dates? Figs?
  7. I was having a chat to a mate who says he has a vegan that works for him. The guy is super unhealthy though which I found interesting. Turns out he does no exercise, eats mostly tinned veg(seriously!) and eats tons of white bread. Now the concept was pretty strange to me, I wouldnt want to eat anything he does and I always thought vegans were healthy people chomping on delicious green veggies. Apparently I was very wrong.
  8. I will ask my wife to put some of her cool recipes together and post them.
  9. So last night I had both sides of my family over for dinner(direct and in-laws) along with all of kids etc. We made burritos and didnt tell anyone it wasnt actually pulled pork in the burritos but actually a vegan substitute. I had to tell my brother beforehand seeing as how he is vegan but no one else knew. Everyone loved them and were very complimentary, it came as a bit of a shock to my father in law who is a hardened meat eater that they in fact contained no meat! So its given some ideas to some people who previously thought they wouldnt be able to go without meat because veggie based food is bland and boring.
  10. Are you referring to the few isolated cases who bought THC vape juices of eastern origin that had been thinned with vitamin E oils? The same cases that goverments backed by big tobacco money are trying to use to have vaping banned all over the place? Bottom line is that gathering a bunch of anecdotal "facts" and stringing them together in a post looks good but is often questionable in terms of its validity. Just a thought.
  11. As someone who understands the process I can say that is an immense amount of work. Finding the correct blend of ductile vs durable is difficult and takes a lot of R&D work. Its much easier to understand high quality workmanship like this when it is in your hands.
  12. Add to that the grandparents are living a lot longer these days. Some people say the world isnt overpopulated and others say it is. The problem is that great grandparents are often still around when the new generations is being born and that is having a knock on effect on overpopulation.
  13. Well no, a dog and its originating species were scavengers and opportunistic hunters, so they can survive on plant based diets for a limited time but need meat eventually. Cats on the other hand are a predatory species and this goes for all cats. They are 100% carnivores and feeding them anything else is just killing them slowly. There was a whole thing a while back where warnings were issued to vegans who tried to feed their cats vegan based diets, it just doesnt work.
  14. Yeah but you arent going to do that as a normal person are you? Normal people are going to have kids, those kids need to be transported all over the place, consume food, wear clothing etc. They will grow up to have jobs that will most likely mean they drive themselves places, they might travel for work which means flights, they will most likely reproduce too which just exasperates the point. So no, a normal person wont do something stupid like dumping barrels of oil but they will most likely reproduce.
  15. I raised the same point in the thread a while back. I had read something which I cant find again that detailed how much impact a single human has. The basic premise of the article was that having kids was the most damaging thing anyone could do to the environment.
  16. My wife does, its amazing. I will ask her for the recipe.
  17. You arent exactly the typical South African I was referring to are you? Most people eat meat daily and my comments were directed at them. The second point about not eating "good" red meat, honestly you would have had to have your head in the sand for the last few years to not have seen all of the medical advice from the heart foundations etc etc about that. There is no good red meat, the methods of slaughter dont make a difference other than for religious reasons. Im not trying to convince anyone about anything, we all need to make our own choices on what is right and wrong.
  18. Im not sure anyone would die of hunger or any economies would crash. The reality is that everyone, regardless of beliefs should be cutting down on their meat intake. The health benefits, impact to the environment and savings on food cost should be reason enough. There is also the flipside of just exploring other ways of cooking and food that doesnt revolve around the meat. My wife and I started just by exploring ways to cut down on meat consumption, the dishes she came up with were so good that we just stopped eating meat altogether. So really what Im trying to say is that aside from the moral aspects its nice to just try different things, you may end up enjoying it.
  19. No I havent, I dont eat meat for love of animals and conservation of the environment. I dont need to subject myself to watching the suffering of animals in a documentary to support my beliefs.
  20. And your comments bring no value to me. As a vegetarian its people exactly like that who make me want to start eating meat again just so I dont have to feel associated with them. I have never met a single person who has been converted by bible bashing Christians arriving at their house telling them to convert. Its the same for vegans who militantly push their agenda. On the contrary though I do know a lot of people who have changed their views through healthy debate and the planting of seeds for thought. So really what Im trying to say is that a point can be made without it being shoved down someone's throat.
  21. My wife has a bakery/cake shop, behind it is a hairdresser. The Hairdresser added a really big sign last week above my wife's sign about watching certain documentaries on Netflix like Cowspiracy etc. It has caused a fair amount of public annoyance and rambling on facebook pages for the business. So after being verbally abused by the person who put the sign up for asking them to take it down something became very apparent: some people are just argumentative asses who require some kind of platform to express that.
  22. Honestly that is one of the things I have always loved about NZ and SA rugby, there is always a mutual respect for two great rugby nations. I guess it doesnt hurt that half of NZ these days is made up of saffas!!
  23. All 3 of those questions would have the same answer... it depends. If the fishing is really good and its a safe spot with a variety of fish then Im sure people would be willing to pay. I fished a trout farm for lack of a better term just outside JHB a few years ago, it was pretty expensive but the fishing was good and you pretty much knew you were going to catch something, so people gladly paid. It was bust as heck there.
  24. Its a decent sized 8 inch grinder and probably from the days when motors werent rated on input power. I would say R800 is a fair price for it. Im not sure if Femco was the same thing as Emco but there were a lot of Emco machines around.
