  1. Yeah humans and their distinctions on what is right and wrong are complex things. I went vegan for just over 2 months before dropping down to vegetarian. Being vegan is just taking things way too far in terms of inconvenience. What amazed me the most about the time I was vegan was that I didnt have the urge to tell anyone about it, that must be the reason I couldnt keep it going I know the farmers personally and the lifestyle that both the eggs and milk I consume come from. Those are happy *true* free range birds/animals.
  2. Well it seems my wife will be pretty happy with her streaming from tonight. Lately our 10mb ADSL has been battling a bit, fortunately Im listening to the glorious sounds of the techies installing my 200/100 fibre while I type this :)
  3. Im still using my Roku so I havent bought an android box yet. There is a great thread with many users of that specific box here: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/ematic-4k-ultra-hd-android-tv-box-agt419-feedback.1037133/page-5#post-24025185 Definitely someone who will be able to help on that side.
  4. The LIT box is the Ematic box with Telkom branding. Its just an HDMI connector so if your tv has HDMI then it will work.
  5. If ratings were given on feelings and how buyers/sellers communicate then it would dilute the effectiveness of the ratings system. That is part of life, people can be dicks.
  6. I prefer the Southpark term of tortured baby cow. Veal is just ridiculously inhumane.
  7. I have, it doesnt mean anyone wants to get bashed with it though. You realize that the religious zealots for <insert religion> feel the same way about their religion too? Is it something you enjoy being on the receiving end of?
  8. Hehe the veganazi terms being thrown around are hilarious, its no wonder society hates vegans so much. It is possible *gasp* to have your own beliefs and follow your own dietary choices without bashing ever else who doesnt agree with you. Its tantamount to bible bashing and everyone knows how well that goes down.
  9. I dont have them currently but they are on my radar. Hikvision are pretty much top when it comes to cameras and most have a built in mic. Alternatively you get those basic wifi cams that sit inside your house and can alert your phone on an app if movement triggers them etc.
  10. Apple Homekit is a bit of a misnomer because it isnt actually a tangible thing. First question off the bat is, do you own an Apple Homepod? Im guessing no because very few people would think its a good idea buying an ~R8k smart speaker! I have a fully Apple household too and Homekit isnt really a thing, the certification cost is too high for manufacturers like iTead(Sonoff) to pay licensing for. Long story short is that the smart speakers from Apple/Amazon/Google need to be able to talk to a device if you want to use voice commands to turn it on and off. Amazon and Google have no issues but Apple is another issue altogether. IF you just want to use the app that the device comes with on your iphone or ipad then no worries, Sonoff will work just fine for that. I personally use Home Assistant as the hub for my home automation, through that Im able to extend any device I have to being "homekit" compatible. So I can ask Siri to turn on or off lights, open/close front gate or garage door etc. I can also do the same with Amazon or Google at the same time and the Echo speaker I have is great for that. Did any of that make sense? Im not sure it would to me and I just wrote it!
  11. Im glad you are forging on with the plan. I can say that I have a fair understanding of where you are coming from although on a smaller scale. Been building a house for the last few months bit by bit and its really rough going when you are trying to do most of it yourself. The type of bond and the holder of it prevents us from getting money from the bank so its often a case of trying to make a plan just to get something completed. Stress levels through the roof from working normal hours and then working until midnight in the house. Rinse and repeat the next day and try to keep everything on track and in once piece!
  12. Recycling helps, my wife and I recycle everything that we can, avoid buying items in plastic etc. Still she gets in her car to go to work every day and I do the same, sure its a lack of public transport to blame its still what happens. I travel fairly often for work too, I see they have started including the amount of carbon emissions your flight will use per passenger on the tickets now.travel. My last return flight from EL-JHB and back produced just over 300kg's of carbon emission, which is pretty damn scary!
  13. ^This 100% Its not possible to live like a rural villager unless you live in a rural village. Travelling to work and home, flights etc all account for massive environment impact that you cant avoid.
  14. Netflix and Youtube both will adjust quality to the speed of your connection. 1080P Netflix chews big chunks of data! You can set the quality manually in both though and that saves a huge amount.
  15. Its a very different experience with Android TV vs Android phone OS. The TV boxes have 2GB of RAM and 8GB of flash which seems low but its perfect for the device type. The storage size isnt an issue because the play store only has TV apps and not the normal phone version apps. Most of them have an SD card slot too if needed.
  16. Technically a smart TV should do just that, in practice they are mostly terrible. I have never seen a smart TV that isnt slow and laggy as heck, I would 100% still use an external media player like the Ematic. The most important thing is updates, make sure the device will be support for a while to come. Ematic and Xioami are two good examples of very long term support and are in essence the exact same device.
  17. Forgot to mention, the biggest plus for me is that it has the ethernet port so its not like the Xiamoi where you have to get a USB-ethernet adapter. Im probably going to get one of these if/when my Roku dies.
  18. Its definitely the right box to buy, its got the android tv version which is very different from the tablet version and designed to play content. The Google assistant is nice too. Never heard anyone say anything negative about the Ematic and its got play verification for the DSTV now app and Netflix.
  19. So I was thinking recently about random stuff and one thought that popped into my head was around vegans/vegetarians and the impact of their diet on their health. Lets assume that having a plant based diet increases your lifespan and quality of life. There is an issue with that though, at the rate humans are being born vs mortality rates there is a serious overpopulation issue. If the mortality rates are lowered you can be damn sure the birth rates are not going to decline. This is in itself an issue because regardless of what you eat or how you recycle etc the impact of a human being alive is way higher than any eco friendly choices you can make. Bottom line with that is that having a single child is more detrimental to the environment than anything you can do to conserve it.
  20. Both machines looks similar in function, the S8 just seems to have a fancier screen and cost a whole lot more...
  21. "Sans Vega said Cavendish came out of the race in an upbeat mood." Yeah I would also be in an upbeat mood if I was completely unable to deliver any results but was still being paid well for it!!
  22. Yup its always the unfortunate state of things. One thing that does affect up and coming cyclists in SA it the lack of support vs other countries cycling bodies. Im sure there are other factors I dont know about too. One thing that always amazes me is the quality of cyclists from Norway. Think about it, a country is frozen most of the year and has a few months where the sun doesnt come up at all! Quite something to just get a good start in cycling with those conditions.
  23. Look into home assistant (hass.io) its free and super powerful home automation.
  24. Favorite trail run of the year for me is next weekend and I have a torn achilles Super bummed Im going to miss it.
