  1. Wow that looks awesome! well done Mrs Porsche!
  2. Agge nee! That is often the case sadly. Im looking to do something like that with a desk top I have to make, going to be basic plywood for the main structure, then add a 6mm quality veneered ply on top. Some edge banding in nice wood will hide all of the edges.
  3. NO!!! You have sent me far too much already! Im not in a rush, when I find the right piece then it will be good. I have some wild olive that Im trying to figure out how to cut, can use it for turning or flatwork but not both.
  4. Hahaha! we dont have kids so the dogs get to be wherever they want!!
  5. Its a great time to design a base that works for you. I made one about a year or two back that has really big storage drawers in and a spot underneath for the dogs beds.
  6. I love ToT that oke is such a chop AvE takes a bit of getting used to but he has more one liners than Jimmy Carr! Also his language is proper Canadian miner language...
  7. Most of the metal turning in an item like that would be done with a 4 jaw independent chuck where you could align the center portion with a dial indicator after turning the ends. Its a pain to setup something like that but would be the correct way to machine it.
  8. Been there, and still pretty much there. On youtube these are the guys I enjoy for that type of thing: Metal work: AvE This old Tony Ca Lem (This youngster is amazing!) Wood turning: Tim Yoder Martin Saban-Smith Marius Hornberger Pask makes Andy Philip Heath Knuckles There are a bunch more, but for beginner stuff the best is Tim Yoder. He is great at teaching technique while making fun projects.
  9. Yes!!! that hammer is gorgeous! I have about the same size head that was found in the box with my grandfathers handplane. It had an old metal pipe flared out as a handle. He was a practical man, it just needed to work! Im still looking for a good piece of wood to use as a handle for a similar outcome.
  10. Its a fairly common tree in this area, the municipality planted them many years ago. Unfortunately they are the target species of the PSHB(Polyphagous shot hole borer beetle) and a lot of the trees are dying as a result. Others, like this one survived but ended up HEAVILY burled from the damage caused by the beetles. I think I still have a blank or two around so will take a pic of them. Its burled and ambrosia due to the effects of the bacteria the beetles grow inside of their holes.
  11. I have been really busy at work during lockdown, got a client in Australia and a client in USA being onboarded so its early mornings and late nights during the week. To chill a bit over Easter weekend I turned a lidded pot to keep teabags in, I have been drinking too much coffee so giving it a break for a bit! The wood is burled London plane tree and the finial is zebrano. Finished with Howards conditioning wax/oil. There were a lot of cracks and voids around the burled areas so I filled them with CA glue and turned it down then filled again a few times.
  12. I hated anything to do with woodwork for most of my life, it all started when I found an old rusted handplane my late grandfather had left in a box at my moms house. After restoring the plane I needed to do something with it and the rest is history. Wood turning is still my favourite though, you can come out with a completed project quite quickly and its a great relaxing hobby. I have the 12-18 lathe from Adendorff, it was quite cheap and is surprisingly good. I see they now have a variable speed version which is a lot nicer than changing speed via stepped pulleys. If you had to get one thing I would go with the lathe, everything else requires multiple tools to complete a project. With a lathe and one or two chisels you can make pretty much whatever you like.
  13. Looking good! those radial scratches are always a thing, I use every second grit to manually sand in the direction of the grain to get rid of them. The acrylic/resin blanks are nice because you dont have to finish them at all, I would recommend getting the sponge based micromesh pads for them, the finish is amazing. Another fun thing to try - when you feel brave - is a CA finish. Its got quite a learning curve to it but the liquid glass type finish looks fantastic and is very durable. P1 one step cutting creme from mr woodturner is cheap and can create a very high quality finish on acrylic and CA glue finishes.
  14. That could have been all kinds of interesting!!! The jnr gent and vertex are a lot more complicated because the sizes of ends and bushings are all different. Have to make sure those bushings are in the correct order otherwise its a ruined blank.
  15. The jnr gentleman is quite a nice kit, its quite bulky but has a screw on top. I have found that with highly figured woods you need a slightly thicker pen otherwise you lose that figure. Some people like a bigger pen that makes a statement, they are definitely not as comfortable to write with though. I have a bunch of slimlines all over the place which I use if I need to write something.

It literally just sounds like someone panning left to right the whole time. Im not sure I like it.
  17. For once its the whole world economy suffering together. Normally its just SA getting shafted for some nonsense spewed by the president.
  18. Sorry bro That hits me right in the big feels. Its my worst nightmare. I know its hard but try to remember all of the good times and how loved your dog was.
  19. I wish I had that same 3 weeks forced leave, would love to get stuck into some projects. Sadly its business as usual for me, I work from home in international IT so nothing has changed.
  20. Pen turning is a great way to take your mind off things, it isnt too demanding on you and its fairly quick to get a completed project. I have found that friends and family love getting pens as gifts, they are all entirely unique which makes it extra special.
  21. That depends entirely on the size of its company and its financial position. My wife owns a small bakery and Easter is the time of year that carries them through. This year they dont get Easter plus they have the ongoing expenses of rent etc. So for them if they dont take the time where they arent working off of staff leave then there wont be jobs to come back to for the staff as they will have to close down. But wait Cyril announced support for small businesses during this trying time!!! Yup there is "support" if your business is at least 51% black owned. Seeing as my wife doesnt fit that demographic she gets no support, apparently the government doesnt care about her staff that wont have jobs anymore as a result of that.
  22. Its been a while since I posted any projects in here, I have been crazy busy at work for a while. I have been working on a board to mount my house numbers on, they werent standing out very well on the wall so Im going to mount them to this and then to the wall. I was amazed at home much resin it used, was 1.5L in total for something about the size of A4 paper. Next I needed to curve the edges so I found some STL files to 3D print some radius jigs for my router. They work a charm and I have printed 0.5 and 1" ones so far, many other sizes still waiting to be done. I also printed a sanding attachment for an angle grinder, its used with 80 grit to remove lines and scratches from turned projects in a BIG hurry! I should be done with the number sign in a few days so will post pics when its up.
  23. My neighbors son is morbidly obese, its really bad. I know for a fact he has never done any exercise and spends all of his time playing PUBG. Its sad to see how his confidence has gone down as his weight has climbed. I guess its a different world to the one I knew growing up, we were all outdoors whenever possible and it was very unusual to have overweight kids. Maybe its more normal now and therefore less reason for kids to pick on? I dont have any kids so I dont know what goes on in school other than conversations with siblings that have kids.
  24. Im not blanket parent shaming, medical conditions are always the outlying exception to obesity. The reality though is that the numbers of people with medical conditions related to weight gain are very small. If I look at people I know with overweight kids then its normally people who eat badly and have kids that sit around playing games all day. I should have been more specific about my post and mentioned that medical conditions are excluded from my statement.
  25. There will always be exceptions and those are difficult to deal with. I feel really sad for the kids because they always get abuse for it.
