I'm a big fan of dedicated devices - in my case I use a Garmin 500 with HRM. Works great. Mobile as backup (but as a general rule I try to preserve battery life).

New to MTBiking, started 5 weeks ago and have about 200km under the belt. Had my first big wipeout today...sharp corner, sandy, soft touch on brakes and wheels slid out...and lost plenty skin and incurred significant ego damage. I like to approach new ventures technically, I'm going for a proper fit in two week's time. Was think of doing a skills clinic as well, any suggestions other than Tread for Cape Town area? I've asked Tread, but there doesn't seem to be any planned in foreseeable future in CPT area. Thanks!

Was having these exact thoughts this morning when I left for work at just before 6. Counted multiple riders on Visserhok Rd in Durbanville without any lights - frighteningly irresponsible.

Unfortunately I often see cyclists who apparently fail to grasp the basics of physics ---> weight of bike vs weight of car and consequences thereof. Right or no rights, just be clever about it.

Hi there New to cycling (MTB) and looking for some proper saddle time (40km-ish), not too hilly, and roads with shoulders in Durbanville area. Looking at Wellington out to Spes Bona back via Koeberg, but that's only around 25km. Anyway to extend? Would appreciate and advice/suggstions.

Hi there /DISCLAIMER: I'm new to cycling and know very little... Was hoping someone can help me, I did a race this weekend and close to the end my MTB started make a grinding sound, which I eventually identified as coming from the chain wheel. There is a bolt/screw protruding from the frame and it is making contact with the chain when on the small chain ring. The screw has clearly taken some damage from the contact. Here are 2 photos that will hopefully help - What am I looking at? What is wrong? How do I fix it? Thanks!

The Silverback Storm is a beautiful bike. Definitely on my radar as well. The Momsen SL729 also has R and XT variants it seems, although info is scarce. Also, the one I looked at is R6-7k cheaper than the Storm so some of the SRAM X5/7/9 combination can be upgraded? Going to check out a few LBS in Southern Suburbs this morning again.

Thanks for the feedback, reassuring to here postive comments. This was probably the single hardest thing to decide about...I've changed my mind a couple of times. My thinking now is that, being completely new to cycling, that a hardtail would force me to focus on technique, control, picking lines etc? If the bug bites I can always upgrade later on. Budget wise it of course also allows for better components, lighter frame. Looks good! From all I've read I would need a Large frame, but I should probably get a proper fit to be certain.

Hi there I'm looking at buying a first mountain bike. Mostly XC riding, perhaps a few 2-3 day events later on. Currently looking at hardtail for maximum R25k-ish budget. Not to fussed about alu vs carbon. I've spent some time looking at bikes at different LBS' around me...and lots of internet research...pretty much overwhelmed at this point. Also looking at something like the Scott Scale 940. Any advice, specific model I should perhaps look at, issues to avoid etc? Thanks in advance!
